Nick Relph: Free Piano

Free Piano presents images sourced from online classified listings in the United States, featuring pianos offered free of charge.

Drawing from the over 5000 images Relph collected between 2019 and 2023, Free Piano is an exploration of the life cycle of the piano, the once widely produced instrument that appears to have lost its significance in the modern era. This book presents visual representations of the pianos before their next lives, alongside unedited statements from their surrendering owners.

Join us for the NY launch of Public Domain, Issue #1

With each issue of Public Domain, we invite a distinct voice to select a sequence of images culled from the public domain. The expansion of accessible grants, broadband internet and affordable scanning technology have made available massive caches of otherwise inaccessible material, formerly silently sitting in institutions around the world. With this publication we willfully reanimate these archives by putting their holdings back into circulation.

Our first issue is a collaboration between Felix Bernstein & Gabe Rubin touching on the history of connoisseurship, the aestheticist/decadent fetishization of the “parts” of a book that reached a peak in Victorian q***r journals, the comparisons of gestures from multiple eras by Aby Warburg and how this has become standardized via algorithms, always with an awareness of what is emphasized in this mode of visual comparison of similar “parts” and what is lost.

Ciné-club Totale Dérive was created during Charlotte Houette and François Lancien-Guilberteau’s summer of 2021 stay at the Studio of the South residence in Arles. Beginning with the desire to open the domestic space to the inhabitants of Arles, Houette and Lancien-Guilberteau invited friends or new acquaintances to introduce and screen a favorite film, transforming the residency’s studio space into an improvised cinema. Each programmer wrote a text about their choice, which the duo published in the form of a fanzine distributed at each screening. This book compiles the nine fanzines.
