Under pressure Ghana in must win duel against Niger

African giants Ghana’s Black Stars face a daunting must win duel when they take on Niger in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Morocco.

The Black Stars lost their opening match 1-0 to Angola last weekend, conceding a late goal at the Baba Yara Stadium. Head coach Otto Addo admits that the result against Angola hurt them and are keen to bounce back.

“It was a really, unlucky game. But the response from the players after was really great. They were angry and disappointed and I believe that will pull a reaction from them in the second game,” the tactician said ahead of the game.

He says their morale in training has been high, and they want to make amends.

“The guys looked good at the training, and surely there were some things defensive-wise but also offensive-wise which we had to work on. We tried to implement it in our training as far as we could. I think we are ready for the game,” the former international said.

Niger also lost their opening game to Sudan.

Kenya seek reprieving win against Namibia

Kenya’s national football team Harambee Stars will hold their final training session at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg ahead of Tuesday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Namibia.

Just like Kenya, Namibia do not have a CAF approved stadium in their country, and are hosting their international matches in South Africa.

Stars kicked off their campaign with a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe in Kampala last Friday, and need to win tomorrow’s game to ensure they remain in contention for a place in Morocco next year.

Coach Engin Firat says he believes the team has what it takes to win the match, noting he has worked on improvements from the Zimbabwe game.

“What is important for us is the results after match day six. I believe we will play in the AFCON,” the tactician said.

He added; “There are some things that we need to do better especially offensively. We were a bit slow in transition against Zimbabwe and if we can improve on that I believe we will get a good result,” the coach opined.

Uganda boss Put confident in beating Congo

Uganda will host Congo tonight in their second Group K match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers at the Nambole Stadium, and coach Paul Put is confident they can get a good result to finish top of the group.

The Cranes picked up a point away to South Africa last week in a dramatic 2-2 draw, and a win, against Congo, who have three points, will hoist them top of the group after two games.

Put believes his side has the right mentality and confidence heading into the game.

“If you told anyone that we would have picked a draw away to South Africa last week, they would have said impossible. But we went there and we were almost winning. Of course it is disappointing to lose two points from a winning position but it is a point we will take,” noted the coach.

On the game against Congo he says;

“Congo will be a very tough opponent because their confidence is high, they won their first game. But we are playing at home and the players are really motivated to go all out and win. We will have our fans behind us so I know we will win.”

Uganda are seeking a return to the AFCON after missing the last edition and a win against Congo will boost their confidence.

Sudan seek back to back wins

Sudan will seek back to back wins in the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations when they take on Angola on match day two. The Sudanese kicked off their campaign with a hard earned 1-0 win over Niger, with Bakr Issa scoring the winning goal in the second half.

Head coach Kwesi Appiah says he was pleased with the spirit his team showed, and believes they can finish the first two games top of the group.

“I thank the players for working hard to get the three points as we started the qualifiers. There is still a lot of work to be done because we have many more matches to be played in the group,” Appiah said.

He added; “We had a good outing against Niger and executed most of what we had planned really well. Now the work becomes even tougher because Angola is a really good team and we saw what they can do in the last AFCON. Our ambition is to make it two wins in two matches.”

Playing away in Luanda, Appiah knows it will be no mean task, but remains confident of earning a win.

Mbatha rescues point for South Africa against Uganda

Orlando Pirates man Thalente Mbatha scored a 95th minute stunner to rescue a point for South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in their opening game of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Orlando Stadium.

Bafana were staring at a home defeat after the Uganda Cranes came from a goal down to lead 2-1, but Mbatha’s 95th minute goal wiped the blushes for Hugo Broos and his men.

South Africa had a good start and broke the deadlock after 14 minutes when Burnley’s Lyle Foster ran onto a through ball before clipping it over the keeper, a lead that they kept till halftime.

However, the Cranes were back from the break a determined lot and they levelled the scores in the 51st minute when Dennis Omedi scored with a sublime long range shot that caught the keeper off guard.

Two minutes later, they were 2-1 up when Rodgers Mato scored with what might be goal of the round, striking from almost 40 yards out to catch the keeper off guard.

South Africa however fought as Uganda tried to defend the lead, and they were gifted for their persistence in the 95th minute when Mbatha’s left foot strike landed in the bottom left corner.

Uganda travel back home to take on Congo, while South Africa are away to South Sudan next week.

Denver Mukamba stepping up superbly
Denver Mukamba has reignited his career with a fresh surge of energy since joining Scottland FC. After cameo roles at Dynamos last season, Mukamba has found new motivation at Scottland FC, where stellar performances have elevated him to playing a prominent role at the ambitious Norther Region Division One team.

Over the weekend, Mukamba showcased his impact by scoring a crucial goal that secured a 1-0 victory for Scottland against Trojan Stars at the Heart Stadium. This performance underscored his resurgence after facing challenges in recent years following his initial success in 2012 when he was named the Soccer Star of the Year.

Despite setbacks during his time at Bidvest Wits and disciplinary issues at previous clubs like Dynamos and Caps United, Mukamba’s move to Scottland FC has proven to be a turning point. In the Northern Region Soccer League, he has flourished, winning over fans with his exceptional midfield skills and playmaking abilities.

Mukamba’s seamless ball control, remarkable vision, and knack for creating scoring opportunities have set him apart as a standout player for Scottland. His goal-scoring prowess, coupled with his dynamic presence on the field, has been instrumental in driving Scottland’s debut Division One campaign towards a potential promotion to the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

As Scottland FC aims for glory in the NRSL, currently trailing log leaders MWOS FC by four points, Denver Mukamba’s contributions will be crucial in their pursuit of success. His resurgence at Scottland FC not only reflects his individual talent but also signifies a promising chapter in his career as he continues to make a significant impact on the pitch.

Angola stun Ghana

The Africa Cup of Nations opener saw an unexpected turn of events as Angola shocked Ghana with a late winning goal, leaving Ghanaian fans in disbelief and fury. Despite Ghana’s dominance in possession and numerous attempts on goal, it was Angola who capitalized on a crucial moment to secure a victory.

Angola’s well-organized defense proved to be a challenge for Ghana, who held 57 percent of the ball possession and attempted 18 shots on goal but failed to convert these positive statistics into points. Milson, a second-half substitute for Angola, emerged as the hero by scoring the decisive goal in the 93rd minute, clinching maximum points for the Palancas Negras.

For Ghana, this match was an opportunity for redemption following their disappointing early exit from the previous AFCON tournament. The team, featuring key players like Thomas Partey, Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew, and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, however struggled to find the back of the net despite their attacking line-up.

The defeat to Angola triggered chaos among Ghanaian fans, who expressed their frustration by throwing objects onto the pitch. Such behavior is likely to lead to sanctions against the West African nation by the Confederation of African football who have in the past shown zero-tolerance towards crowd trouble.
Following Thursday’s defeat Ghana head coach Otto Addo will be under pressure ahead of Ghana’s next assignment. Ghana will need to regroup swiftly and bounce back as they prepare to face Niger in what will be a crucial encounter for the black Stars on Monday.

Harambee Stars ready for tough Zim

Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat expects a difficult outing when his side takes on Zimbabwe in the opening Group J match for the qualifiers of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Stars face Zimbabwe at the Nambole Stadium in Kampala, before facing Namibia in the second match four days later in Johannesburg.

“We are facing very strong teams and we know how difficult these first two games will be. I hope for six points but if we can get four, it will be a good start,” Firat says.

Looking forward to the opening game against Zimbabwe, Firat knows it will not be easy, despite beating them when they last met in the four nations invitational tournament in Malawi.

“They (Zimbabwe) don’t have squad problems. All players are fit and they even have others like Billiat (Khama) who has come out of retirement and is a very good player. They have a new coach who has had a bit of time with his team so it will be tough,” noted Firat.

Stars hope for a winning start, despite missing out on the home advantage with the game being played out in Kampala.

Put wants Uganda to go all out against South Africa

Uganda’s head coach Paul Put wants to see his side go all out and show their personality when they face South Africa in the first match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Belgian coach says he knows it will not be an easy outing especially playing away from home, but has urged his side to step up in their best shape.

“This match is about personality and character. We will go out there and give a fight for Uganda and get a win. We have prepared well and everyone is ready,” the coach said.

He added; “We respect South Africa. It is a very good side and especially playing them here in their home turf will not be an easy task. But we are prepared to start our journey with a positive result,” the coach opined.

Uganda missed out on the last AFCON, but are keen to ensure they make it to Morocco next year.

Dynamos begin Chibuku Super Cup defence

Reigning Chibuku Super Cup champions, Dynamos, are gearing up to defend their title as they face off against ZPC Kariba at Rufaro Stadium. The team’s recent 1-0 victory over Chegutu Pirates in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League has set the stage for an exciting clash against ZPC Kariba, where they aim to continue their winning streak and uphold their positive momentum.
With a triumph over Ngezi Platinum in the Chibuku Super Cup final at the Baobab Stadium last season, Dynamos is eager to replicate their success in Zimbabwe’s premier cup competition. However, their journey begins with a formidable challenge in ZPC Kariba, who exhibited resistance by holding FC Platinum to a 1-1 draw in a league clash at Nyamhunga Stadium at the weekend.

With a significant 16-point gap behind log leaders Simba Bhora in the league, Dynamos understands that the Chibuku Super Cup presents perhaps their biggest opportunity of clinching silverware this season. Ahead of Wednesday’s showdown, both teams are fully aware of the stakes involved and the importance of securing a victory to progress in the competition.

The anticipation for Wednesday’s fixture is high, with both Dynamos and ZPC Kariba eager to dominate.

The previous meeting between the two sides ended in a 1 all stalemate but in Wednesday’s clash there will have to be a winner. If the match ends in a stalemate after regulation time, the fixture will have to be decided by a penalty shootout.

Lloyd Chigowe, has an impressive track record of unbeaten performances since assuming his role as interim Head Coach. With each victory and positive result under his leadership, Chigowe is steadily building a compelling case to be appointed on a permanent basis by the club’s leadership.

Warriors Coach happy with preps

Zimbabwe national soccer team Head Coach Michael Nees is happy with how well things have gone in preparation for Friday’s clash against Kenya slated for Kampala.

“The conditions are extremely good, I am sure this is one of the best training pitches in Africa. I rily appreciate the support we have got so far, we cannot complain. We are trying to focus in towards the game. We are satisfied so far, great and perfect” said Nees.
With Nees, having taken over the Warriors Head Coach position, fans are not too sure what to expect under the reign of the German gaffer. Zimbabwe has had two German coaches take charge of the Warriors in the past, namely Reinhard Fabisch and Klaus Dieter Pagels. Their philosophies had a German footprint written all over them, and Nees is expected to continue on that path.

Having had no prior opportunity of inculcating his playing style through international friendlies, Nees will not have much time before Friday’s clash against Kenya. He has had a bit of time with the local-based players who left for Uganda on Sunday, with many of the European-based players joining camp from Monday.

Having had stints with Seychelles and Rwanda before, Nees will be familiar with African Football, and the German gaffer will be fully aware of what to expect on Friday. The absence of Brandon Galloway and Tino Kadewere, who were both called up but will be absent due to injury, will be a huge blow for Nees, who would have wanted to have a full complement of players to choose from.

Despite the difficulty of facing a side that is on an upward trajectory, Zimbabwe’s gaffer will be hoping to do enough to ensure that Zimbabwe kickstarts its Afcon Qualifying campaign on a high.

Ghana lose world cup opener

Ghana’s Black Princesses suffered a tough 2-1 defeat in their opening match against Austria at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Bogota, Colombia. Despite their efforts, the African team couldn’t secure a win against a determined Austrian side, with goalkeeper Mariella El Sherif playing a key role in her team’s victory.

Austria took the lead early on, with Hannah Fankhauser scoring in the 12th minute after some impressive play by Valentina Maedl and Laura Spinn. Ghana fought back with determination, but El Sherif’s outstanding saves kept them at bay, including a spectacular stop against Stella Nyamekye.

The Black Princesses continued to press forward in the second half, with Jennifer Owusua and Tracey Twum missing crucial chances to level the score. Nyamekye came close to scoring a remarkable goal, hitting the crossbar as Ghana struggled to find the net.

Austria extended their lead through a penalty kick converted by Nicole Ojukwu after Asana Alhassan’s handball in the box. In stoppage time, Nyamekye scored a stunning goal, but it was not enough to change the outcome of the match.

Looking ahead, Ghana will need to regroup and focus on their upcoming matches against Japan and Canada to improve their chances of advancing to the knockout stage in Group E.
The Black Princesses will need a positive result in their next fixture if they are to remain in contention for a place in the knockout phase of the competition. Ghana will carry with them some positive after showing great promise in their opening fixture.

Nigeria get off top flying start

Nigeria’s U-20 women’s football team, the Falconets, began their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup journey with a hard-earned 1-0 victory against Korea Republic at the Estadio El Techo in Bogota, Colombia on a Sunday night. Flourish Sabastine’s goal in the 86th minute was the decisive moment in the closely fought Group D match.

Following a goalless first half Nigeria dominated the second half, with Imuran’s free-kick almost finding the target and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu’s skillful run forcing a save from Korean goalkeeper Woo Seobin. Eventually, the Falconets’ persistence paid off when Sabastine’s cross found the net, leading to jubilation among Nigerian supporters. This victory adds to Nigeria’s remarkable record in the tournament, marking their fourth consecutive win over Korea Republic in the U-20 World Cup history.

Looking forward, Nigeria faces a tough challenge against Germany, while Korea Republic aims to bounce back against Venezuela.

On the other hand, Morocco’s debut in the U-20 Women’s World Cup ended in disappointment as they lost 2-0 to Paraguay in Cali, Colombia on the same Sunday. Despite showing promise early on, with Hajar Jbilou hitting the crossbar, Morocco couldn’t match Paraguay’s performance. Fatima Acosta capitalized on a goalkeeper’s mistake to score the opening goal before halftime and secured the win with a penalty in the 57th minute.

Despite the defeat, Morocco displayed glimpses of potential in a challenging Group C alongside USA and Spain. The North African team must regroup swiftly as they face the USA next, while Paraguay prepares to take on Spain in their upcoming matches.

Zim preps in top gear ahead of Uganda clash

The Zimbabwe national soccer team’s preparations for upcoming back to back Afcon qualifiers are in full swing with the Warriors gearing up for their crucial match against Uganda this Friday. The team’s local players departed from Zimbabwe and have now arrived in Uganda, while the foreign-based players joined directly from their clubs after weekend fixtures.

Unfortunately, Tinotenda Kadewere, a key player, will be absent from the squad due to an injury sustained during his club’s recent victory over Montpellier, where he played a significant role but will now miss out on representing the Warriors.

This upcoming game against Kenya marks the debut match for the new German head coach, Michael Nees, who begins his reign as Warriors gaffer. Kenya has proven to be a challenging opponent for Zimbabwe in recent encounters, with defeats in a four nations tournament and at the COSAFA Cup in south Africa adding to the pressure.

Despite disappointing performances in recent World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Lesotho, Michael Nees will be eager to instigate a turnaround for the team as they embark on their Afcon qualifying campaign.

The addition of Washington Arubi to the team is expected to address issues in the goalkeeping department, while the inclusion of Khama Billiat is set to bring a wealth of experience to the Warriors’ line-up. Following their absence in the last Afcon edition due to an international ban, Zimbabwe is eager to secure a spot in the upcoming tournament which will be hosted by Morocco.

Simba grateful for Hilal test

Simba SC head coach Fadlu Davids says he was pleased with the test his side was given by Sudanese champions Al Hilal, ahead of the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League. The two sides played in a friendly match in Dar es Salaam, which ended 1-1, with Hilal finishing the duel with 10 men .

Cameroonian new signing Christian Ateba scored the opener for Simba, before the home side equalized in the second half through Serge Pokou.

“It was a really good test for us and this is exactly what we expect in CAF Competitions. When the swing of the game is in your hands, you have to take your chances and when you don’t then you get punished. It was a really good side, very physical and tactical and they gave us a good test,” Davids said.

His Hilal counterpart Florent Ibenge was also grateful for the test.

“This was a very good game for us and we were tried in very tough circumstances, playing with 10 men. Ahead of the CAF games, it was important for us to play such an opponent and see where we are as a team,” Ibenge pointed out.

Simba will now head into the final phase of preparations at home, and Davids is confident they have what it takes to make the group stages of the Champions League.

Tanzania target positive start in AFCON ’25 hunt

Tanzania hope for a positive start as they kick off their journey towards qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with a home duel against Ethiopia. The Taifa Stars have only qualified for the Cup of Nations three times, but are keen to make it four, for the competition slated for Morocco.

Interim coach Suleiman Hemedi says they are keen to start well, and believes they have a good squad that can propel them to qualification. They have been drawn in Group H of the qualifiers, where they will battle out for a ticket with DR Congo and Guinea as well.

“We have prepared well for the game and we are ready. We had the entire group training together and physically, mentally, everyone is okay,” the coach said.

He added; “We haven’t faced Ethiopia in a while but we know the kind of team they are. For us, we have a mission and we will work hard to achieve that mission. We have a good squad with a blend of experienced and young players and we will show our worth on the pitch.”

Meanwhile, the coach says that the absence of experienced players Simon Msuva and Mbwana Samatta will not affect the team as they have able replacements.

Tanzanian Premier League side Azam FC have announced they have fired their entire technical bench after a spate of poor results. A statement from the club said that head coach Yousoupho Dabo who has been at the helm for the last one year has been relieved of his duties.

Mali youth international hogs the limelight
Sekou Kone has hogged the limelight after making a significant move to English giants Manchester United. At just 18 years old, Kone represents the bright future for both Manchester United and his home country, Mali. Coming from Guidars FC in Mali, Kone will begin his journey with Manchester United’s academy to ease his transition into life in Manchester.
This signing marks Manchester United’s fifth addition this summer. Kone’s exceptional performance at the Under 17 World Cup last year captured the attention of various European teams, including Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers, but ultimately, he chose Manchester United as his new home.
During the Under 17 World Cup, Kone played a pivotal role in Mali’s journey to the semi-finals in November 2023, demonstrating his skills on an international stage. With 12 caps for Mali at the youth level, Kone’s potential is evident, reflected in his reported 1 million pounds deal with add ons.
As a defensive midfielder born in 2006, Kone possesses impressive technical abilities, complemented by his physical prowess, essential qualities for his position. Manchester United’s recruitment department recognized Kone’s talent and potential, aiming to further develop him into a valuable asset for the club in the coming years.
Mali, known for their consistency in international youth competitions, is reaping the rewards of their dedication to youth development. Following in the footsteps of Seydou Keita, who made a name for himself in European football with clubs like Barcelona, Sevilla, and AS Roma, Kone seems poised for a similar trajectory if he maintains his focus during his time in Manchester.

Victor Osihmen’s quandary
Victor Osihmen stands at a crossroads, grappling with the aftermath of his failed attempt to secure a move away from Napoli on deadline day. The air is thick with speculation as reports circulate that he has been omitted from Napoli’s squad list for the season, a consequence of Romelu Lukaku’s arrival at the Serie A club.
Despite his official status as a Napoli player, Victor finds himself on the outskirts of Antonio Conte’s plans. The prolific forward has yet to make an appearance for Napoli in the early stages of the season, prompting discontent from Conte, who has reportedly questioned Osihmen’s commitment to the team.
In a twist of fate, Victor’s potential transfer to Chelsea fell through due to his purportedly exorbitant salary demands, paving the way for Jadon Sancho to fill the void at the London club on transfer deadline day. Seeking refuge from this setback, Saudi Arabia emerged as a promising alternative for Osihmen, particularly with Al Ahli on his radar.
Rumors circulated that Napoli and Al-Ahli had struck a lucrative £67 million deal, hinting at a potential fresh start for the Nigerian striker. However, negotiations hit a snag as Al Ahli hesitated to meet Osihmen’s wage demands of £500,000 per week, leading to the collapse of the deal and the subsequent recruitment of English forward Ivan Toney by the Saudi side.
Reflecting on his past achievements, Victor Osihmen’s standout performance in the 2022/2023 season saw him net an impressive 26 league goals, contributing significantly to Napoli’s long-awaited title triumph after 33 years.
In contrast, the previous season painted a different picture as the towering striker managed a modest 15 goals amidst a turbulent campaign for the club. As Victor navigates this period of uncertainty and recalibrates his career trajectory, the football world watches with bated breath to see where his journey will lead him next.

Al Ahly star moves to Europe

Egypt and Al Ahly’s dependable centreback Mohamed Abdelmoneim has moved to Europe, signing for French club OGC Nice on a three year contract.

Abdelmoneim, 25, leaves Ahly’s Red Devils after a storied career that saw him win the Egyptian Premier League three times (2017–18, 2022–23 and 2023–24) and the CAF Champions League twice (2022–23 and 2023–24).

“It was time for me to take up a new challenge at a big European club, and I’ve chosen to join OGC Nice in order to take that next step in my career. I’d like to thank the club for believing in me, and I’d like to thank Al Ahly for making this transfer possible. I’m going to give my all to make the fans proud and to help OGC Nice to achieve its aims,” the defender said after he was unveiled at the club.

Nice are confident that the move will be a step up in his career, and he will become an integral part of their project.

“We were in continuous contact with each other throughout the summer. He played his last league game on 29th July, and after he won the title with his club, we sped things up so that he could join us. He’s a central defender with a lot of experience, including at international level, as well as good heading, tough pressing and great passing,” said Nice’s Sporting Director Florian Maurice.

Perfect start for Yanga in league defense

Young Africans (Yanga) started the defense of their Tanzanian Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Kagera Sugar away from home. Goals from Clement Mzize and Maxi Nzengeli earned them three points and a clean sheet on away soil.

Head coach Miguel Gamondi was pleased with the win, but says there’s much more to do moving forward, especially in finishing the chances they create.

“It was a difficult game on a difficult pitch. In the first half we played really well and we created many scoring chances but scored just one goal. I think we should have done better. We didn’t play very well in the second half, but it’s okay, it’s three points and it is a good start,” said the tactician after the game.

He adds; “It is important to win the first game but there is room for improvement.”

Nzengeli opened the scoring for Yanga in the 26th minute with a low shot from the edge of the box after some quick passing by Yanga. Mzize then completed the job late in the second half with a sweetly struck volley off a Stephan Aziz Ki cross.

Okere delighted to start off with a win

Tusker’s interim coach Charles Okere says he is delighted to have started off his tenure at the club with a win. The brewers picked a season-opening 1-0 win over Sofapaka, who are coached by their immediate former head coach Robert Matano.

Okere said that despite jitters in the game, his side maintained a good outing to get a positive result.

“It was really important to start off the season with a win because it sets the tone for the rest of the campaign. It was a really difficult match against a well organized opponent and I am delighted that we could come off with something,” the coach said.

He added; “Of course there were some small jitters being the first competitive game of the season and having several new players too but I am delighted that we remained compact and I know we will get better as the season grows.”

The league goes on a three-week international break, before the brewers take on Kariobangi Sharks in their next match. Okere says the team has to remain active during this break to maintain momentum.
