PROJECT NOAH Series: What Project NOAH means for the future of disaster response and management 🌤

It is very important for the average Filipino to be aware of the natural hazards in their locality. To do this, one would need a highly adaptive system that updates accurate data regularly on a platform that can be reached by thousands, such as Project NOAH.

UP NOAH is testament to the capabilities and desire of Filipino scientists to serve their nation. Efficient disaster risk preparedness is something that the Philippines is still developing on the ground level.

It is through efforts like UP NOAH which will allow those at grassroots level to access pertinent information and be better prepared for natural hazards.

PROJECT NOAH 🖥

Climate change has increased the severity of natural disasters that occur. These factors and more have led to the Philippines being ranked first in the 2022 World Risk Index being measured in terms of natural vulnerability and susceptibility and status of disaster response and preparation.

While it may be the government and local response units’ responsibility to ensure timely information dissemination, safety, and proper distribution of relief supplies, it is also equally important for the average Filipino to be aware of the natural hazards in their locality.

To do this, one would need a highly adaptive system that updates accurate data regularly on a platform that can be reached by thousands.

PROJECT NOAH Series: How to access Project NOAH👩‍💻

The main objective of UP NOAH is to increase local awareness of natural disasters as this is important in instilling a culture of preparedness which is vital in reducing damage from calamities.

As the information it provides is available to all, UP NOAH ideally allows local community leaders to not only be aware of the general dangers a calamity brings, but also zero in on hazards specific to their area as to allow them to form concrete plans of action for their constituents. Project NOAH can be accessed at https://noah.up.edu.ph

PROJECT NOAH Series: The importance of Project NOAH in the Philippines 🇵🇭

The Philippines’ geographical location, while noted for its important economic value and natural splendor, also holds a reputation for being among the most disaster-prone areas in the world.

The country experiences frequent seismic activity as it is situated on the fringes of the Pacific Ring of Fire and is also exposed to several typhoons a year and severe rainfall, the outcomes of which include heavy flooding and landslides.

Project NOAH Series - What is Project NOAH? 🤔

UP NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards), previously known as Project NOAH, was the brainchild of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Formed in 2012, it was created as a response to the call of the administration of the late Pres. Benigno Aquino III for the need to formulate an accurate and highly responsive disaster prevention and mitigation system that provides up-to-date information on high-risk areas throughout the country.

MEDICAL MA*****NA 101: SHOULD IT BE LEGALIZED?

Ma*****na, an herbal drug derived from the plant Cannabis sativa, is widely known for its pain-relieving effect and has been used for treating different conditions, including severe childhood epilepsy.

Many studies prove that cannabis has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. In a series of clinical tests, cannabis has shown to provide benefits for pain reduction, better sleep, and improved function, even in patients with symptoms refractory to standard therapies.

Regardless of the benefits of the herb to the medical field and the economic sector, governments are still asked to practice caution if they plan to legalize the use of ma*****na since addiction or abuse of the drug leading to mental or psychological dysfunction is inevitable if the law lacks necessary safeguards.

WHY MOTHERS ARE FIGHTING TO LEGALIZE MEDICAL MA*****NA IN THE PHILIPPINES

In a series of clinical tests, cannabis has shown to provide benefits for pain reduction, better sleep, and improved function.

Sharon, a single mother, mentioned that allowing them to access medical cannabis might ease the conditions of her child, Angelo, who is suffering from severe epilepsy and cerebral palsy.

“I’ve accepted that in my son’s case, he will never really get better. But I wish that his quality of life could be preserved, or that he could live for one year where he doesn’t have a seizure. Or that we wouldn’t be so dependent on his medicine… because it is so expensive,” she said in an interview with VICE.

MEDICAL MA*****NA 101: What’s the difference between CBD and THC? 🧐

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) causes the “high” that people get when consuming recreational ma*****na and is notorious for its psychoactive effects on the brain.

However, THC is proven to have medicinal advantages for treating nausea in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and stimulating appetite in AIDS patients with wasting syndrome.

Cannabidiol (CBD), on the other hand, is the less intoxicating component of Cannabis.

CBD is commonly prescribed as medication to patients with severe childhood epilepsy, Dravet syndrome, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MA*****NA AND H**P? 🤔

The Cannabis plant is classified either as “ma*****na” or “hemp”. Ma*****na contains greater than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) by dry weight.

THC causes the “high” that people get when consuming recreational ma*****na and is notorious for its psychoactive effects on the brain.

H**p, which contains < 0.3% THC, is typically used as an ingredient in food, personal care products, and clothing.

WHAT IS KOMBUCHA? 😯🍹

Kombucha has recently been gaining popularity as a wellness drink.

The sweet – and often, slightly acidic – drink is a combination of tea (e.g., green, black, or oolong), sugar, and Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY).

In its fermentation process, the SCOBY breaks down the sugar into alcohol, organic acids, and friendly probiotic bacteria – yes, similar to the ones found in your Yakult and yogurt. Eventually, it also becomes carbonated, giving it a soda-like fizziness.

ARE PFAS HARMFUL TO HUMANS? 🧐

PFAS are chemical compounds that are found in non-stick cookware, water resistant clothing, fast food packaging, and other everyday products.

Studies have shown that exposure to high levels of PFAS may be harmful to human health. Scientists have barely scratched the surface in terms of the health effects of these compounds because there are thousands of PFAS with varying toxicity levels and effects to humans. But here is what we currently know based on scientific studies.

16/10/2022

PFAS (Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are very stable compounds that are NOT broken apart by natural process such as reactions with water or bacterial enzymes. These compounds consist of long carbon chains with fluorine atoms—and the bond between the carbon and fluorine is so strong that it remains intact FOR YEARS, hence the term “forever chemicals”.
