Golden Hour by on

So in love with this exceptional artist 💕

On until November 12th with all works sold 💫

Mckinney expands and deepens her exploration into female subjecthood. The show’s title, Golden Hour reflects the the soft, resonant light of a particular time of day that often inspires self-reflection and signals the beginning of a period of relaxation. Emotionally as much as physically, Golden Hour marks the transition from the external world of work and play to the internal world of rest and solitude.

Mckinney’s work offer a radical possibility: a space in which a person is utterly free to be themselves, an existence circumscribed in aesthetic terms of their own devising. Whether sleeping or smoking, sitting or reclining, these figures inhabit a sense of freedom and raw emotion one feels in the safety of their own space.

With a photographer’s precise technical sensitivity to contrast and color, Mckinney starts every painting with a layer of black gesso from which a portrait evolves, likening the work to the process of developing a photograph in a darkroom. As she has said, “I can’t undo that photographic training—it’s embedded in how I begin a painting. First, I paint the canvas with a black ground, and that black ground serves almost like the camera’s viewfinder. It allows me to build the image.” Photographs, often found on websites or social media, are the source material for her images, which she deploys to parse the nuances of gesture, color, and shape––a contemporary reimagining of the tradition of painting from live models.

goes Beyond The Studio with sculptors & Antony Gormley. Both men cover the power of sculpture, public art, fatherhood, community, architecture, the body, religion and youth as well as so much more! Listen at StancePodcast.com

Happy 1st Feb! Stance is back, going beyond the studio with an immersive and lively chat between world-renowned sculptors and as they speak to host Chrystal Genesis from their respective locations in London and New York.

Both sculptors are visual artists who have shaped the landscape of contemporary art as we know it, with their works being reflective of the spaces and times we live in. As artists, their creative practices invite viewers to consider the world around them and they share unique, considered opinions on their own practices and each other’s work, and highlight themes at the forefront of their creativity.

Antony Gormley, largely known for his public large-scale human figures, and Nari Ward, for his complex, mixed material based sculptures jointly share their thoughts on the power of sculpture, community, fatherhood, architecture, location and belonging. They also reflect on the subversive nature of art, the body as a space we inhabit, as well as their view on their homes within islands. These are just some of the powerful points from this discussion.

Brixton Memorial installation for Cherry Groce designed by architect Sir David Adjaye, was organised and funded by the council in partnership with the Groce family and Adjaye Associates.

Cherry Groce died in April 2011 having spent 26 years in a wheelchair after being shot by police during a raid. The shooting sparked rioting in Brixton at the time.

The statue was unveiled at Windrush Square earlier - 35 and a half years after her shooting.

Dorothy "Cherry" Groce, was 37 when she was shot in the shoulder by Insp Douglas Lovelock.
Police had raided her home looking for her son Michael, who was wanted in connection with an armed robbery. He was never charged in connection with that or the riot which followed his mother's shooting.

Two days of riots ensued as the community protested institutional racism and systemic injustice faced by black people.

Been desperate to see this for months! Lorraine O’Grady: Both/And is the first retrospective of one of the most significant contemporary figures working in performance, conceptual, and feminist art.

Lorraine O’Grady replaces either/or ways of thinking with the endless loop of “both/and,” challenging the fixed positions of self and other, here and there, now and then, all while reflecting on the poignancy of lives lived within dualistic frameworks.

The artist addresses her own experience as a person marked by racial hybridity―her family histories connect the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and the United States―who is nonetheless definitively a Black woman. Through her exploration of legacies of cultural interconnection and reciprocal influences, O’Grady sheds light on the ways Blackness has always existed at the heart of Western modernism.

Wonderful to see at 💫

JR: Chronicles

JR: Chronicles is the first major exhibition in North America of works by the French-born artist. Working at the intersections of photography, social engagement, and street art, JR collaborates with communities by taking individual portraits, reproducing them at a monumental scale, and wheat pasting them—sometimes illegally—in nearby public spaces.

This soaring multimedia installation traces JR’s career from his early documentation of graffiti artists as a teenager in Paris to his large-scale architectural interventions in cities worldwide to his more recent digitally collaged murals that create collective portraits of diverse publics. The centerpiece of the exhibition is The Chronicles of New York City, a new epic mural of more than one thousand New Yorkers that is accompanied by audio recordings of each person’s story. All of the projects on view honor the voices of everyday people and demonstrate JR’s ongoing commitment to community, collaboration, and civic discourse.
