Years ago, when I was learning how to save money on groceries, I read books that recommended keeping a price book. The theory was to know what the regular price was at different stores so that you could purchase it at the store that sold it for the lowest price. Also, you then knew if a sale price was good enough to stock up on that item.
Fast forward to 2023...
The store apps make this so easy. I looked up organic romaine, and I fully expected that Aldi would be the cheapest. A lot of people complain that Giant is expensive. It depends on what you are buying. The lettuce is cheapest at Walmart, then Giant, then Aldi, and the most expensive is Whole Foods. People also say that Whole Foods is also very expensive. It depends on what you are buying
I remember looking up organic russet potatoes, and they were cheapest at Whole Foods.
Most people don't have time to research everything on their list every week, but it pays to periodically research the things that you buy most often.
I do factor other things into my buying decisions, too. For some reason, I can't make myself buy meat from Aldi or Walmart. I also don't like buying produce from Walmart either.
Another factor is that today, I need to get half and half. If I go to Walmart to get the lettuce cheaper, I'm going to pay a lot more for half and half. The half and half is cheaper at Giant, plus I get gas points.
I don't put myself through all of this on a regular basis. I just wanted to share this because everyone is complaining about grocery prices right now and sometimes it pays to do some research.

It's not the prettiest picture, but it's tonight's leftovers. The Nature's Promise Italian sausage was bought on markdown at Giant for $1 49. The Prego sauce is currently on sale at Giant for $1.00. The Barilla pasta was free with Ibotta, Shopkick, and Fetch. It was topped with chopped fresh Basil from the plant that I bought on clearance for .50 last week. That meal would easily feed a family for only $2.49! That's why I love shopping sales and using the apps.

I love when deals show up with perfect timing!
I had to get my husband's lactaid pills today. That little bottle is $9.48.

UPDATE: When I posted this, i hadn't tried it yet. I used it for the past 2 days to grab a couple of items, and i love it! You put your payment method on the app. Put items in your cart and pay. You can go whenever you want (within reason because some of it is short dated). You don't have to schedule a pick-up time like you do for curbside. You go directly to self checkout and ask the employee for your order and give them your name. It's quick and easy!

Everyone seems to think that Whole Foods is so much more expensive.
A 5lb bag of organic potatoes us .20 cheaper than a 3lb bag at Giant.

Good deal at Target on Purezero shampoo or conditioner. If all 3 discounts apply, I think it will be around $1.43. I'm not sure in what order the discounts come off. I calculated the final cost by deducting the coupon, then the 40%, then the 20%.
