PSA: Intersectional Feminism and Intersectionality matters because it includes everyone not just focusing on white Feminism. Intersectional Feminism includes WOC, BIPOC, and people with disabilities.

Going to close out my personal posts for the week with this Tik Tok. I am an avid Intersectional Feminist who believes in equality for all. I don’t tolerate racism, s*xism, ableism, homophobia, or transphobia. And I truly believe as WOC all of us have similar stories when it comes to being s*xualized based on our races. We just need to start having these conversations out in the open and support each other. Thank you, for all your support, everyone! You guys keep me persevering to have these difficult and eye-opening conversations! Much love, from Nina Rose! And remember, it’s not s*xy, it’s racist!

If there is one thing my dad has taught me that stuck, it was the love of Rock music. He used to a drummer and songwriter for two different bands. As a hippie, he has a vast knowledge of it and it was always something that I could connect with him on. We used to call into radio stations holding contests to win tickets to concerts.

But he didn’t just teach me about how great the music sounds, it was the intent behind the lyrics. Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival is about the Vietnam War draft, Four Dead in Ohio by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young is about the Kent State Shootings, and Born in the USA by Bruce Springsteen is about a Vietnam war vet returning to dire circumstances when he deserved better for serving the country. But I’ll share a snippet from one of my favorite Rock bands-Queen. Sometimes, I think what Freddy would have done if he was still alive in the troubling times we are having today.

I guess a part of being a second-generation Filipino American is I have to teach my mom about Intersectional Feminism and S*x Education. My mom used to tell me when I was a teenager if I ever had s*x, I would get pregnant and die. Well, I am still here… And now, I talk to my mom about all the stuff all the time. Here is a glimpse of some of our hilarious s*x ed chats!

Growing in suburbia had its challenges for me growing up. Over the years, all the other Filipino families moved away. This resulting in me not understanding what it meant to be Filipino. But there was always my mom’s stories or superstitions to give me a small glimpse of what her life was like back in the Philippines. Here are a couple:
• The “original” Filipinos are up in the mountains. They are shorter and darker skinned. My mom told me that her sister’s husband was beating her. So, the mountain people took him, had him for a couple of months, and when he came back he never hurt my aunt again.
• My mom’s family is extremely superstitious. She would tell me I couldn’t go to sleep with my hair wet or I would wake up blind. If we lived by woods, there were monsters in them. And she used to make this spitting sound that sounded like a prayer or something anytime we talked about something morbid or sketchy.

Since this is my birthday week, I thought to share some things about myself. I guess the most interesting part of my childhood I can share with you all is that I played on boys’ baseball teams up until my sophomore year of high school.

See, I come from a baseball family and my hippie father never thought I shouldn’t play on boys’ teams because of my gender. In fact, my dad coached most of my baseball teams. When I made the freshman boys baseball team my dad attended every game that he could to make sure I got to play. Otherwise, if he was not there, I was benched.

At the first practice, the head coach hit a baseball straight at my face. I caught it with ease. However, baseball was the least of my worries. I was benched. I was bullied by teammates and coaches. It got to the point where I ended up not going to the last few games. Thing is, the other teams and coaches respected me more than my own coaches and teammates.

I do not regret making the team. I shook that small, suburban town up with my defiance and skill. What I do regret is that I did not buy a yearbook that year to document what I had done. Because there in the team picture, along guys much bigger and taller than I am-is teenage, Goth me.

I heard something awesome that framed it like this, “opinions” that dehumanize people and their decisions is not an opinion. It’s a value and you technically don’t have to respect people’s values if they disrespect your or other people’s existences.

The following video from Living in Color tackles a subject that should be talked about more-why Black women and WOC do not want to be included with the feminist movement. Simply put? Because it doesn’t include the oppression and struggles minority women face. Intersectionality does and that’s why more of us are becoming Intersectional Feminists.

One thing I love about this next article is how it brought up the whole Taylor Swift vs Nikki Minaj feud of 2015 where Nikki called Tayler’s music video for only featuring tall, skinny women and instead of Tayler understanding why it was being viewed as problematic-she took it as a personal hit. No matter what side you were on for that, this is why we need to be Intersectional about our feminism and listen to each other’s struggles. Here is a great quote from the article, “The key to combating “white feminism” is education about intersectionality.” -Taylor Hawk

What is also great about Intersectionality is it includes the role that different factors such as race, age, gender, s*xual orientation, and social classes play on people’s health and the healthcare they receive. The fact of the matter is healthcare should not be one size fits all because not every race is the same and there is still medical racism being experienced today. Check out this simplified video on the connection between Intersectionality and healthcare.
