Sometimes the best way to succeed at something is to do your research first. If you want to become successful on a social media app you need to figure out how to use its affordances to your advantage. What can you do through this app that will get you where you want to go?

Social media has a wide source of information. You learn something new everyday on it. Use these resources wisely. You want to keep up with the trends at the moment. You must be active and see what you can catch onto before it goes viral.

With so many influencers nowadays, it’s hard to stand out with everyone doing the same thing. You need to fill in the space that’s missing. Be creative but also stick to the genre you are in.

Using the right tools is key when making and posting content. Using free apps such as Canva, CapCut, and Adob Express are all easy to use. These provide ideas and help you design.

A large part of engagement is getting the audience’s attention. How can you hook them? How can you keep them coming back for more? Having a good story to tell will make viewers interested and want to follow you.

With social media growing more and more popular it’s important to think before you post. Posting inappropriate content can risk future opportunities for yourself.

With imagined audiences, you have to ask yourself “who do you assume is looking at you?” Are your followers family members? Friends? Co-workers? Imagined affordances plays into imagined audiences. What control do you assume you have over your audience? You can use privacy settings to your advantage and only allow certain people to view your content. You can also use self-surveillance where you monitor what you post. A popular strategy nowadays is using pseudonyms and multiple aliases so no one knows your true identity. People rarely get caught and you are free to post whatever you want without any repercussions because one knows who you are.

While there are many strategies to improve your surveillance and privacy, it might just be easier to establish balance between your public and personal life and social vs. career goals.

Wondering where most of your free time goes? Try to start paying attention to how much time you actually spend on social media. How much time are you spending mindlessly, endlessly scrolling? How much time are you spending actually using critical thinking skills and gaining something from your time spent? Try to also start paying attention to how you feel after spending an hour mindlessly scrolling on social media. Many of us spend hours doing this each day, even though it does not bring us any sort of joy or happiness. So why do we do it?

Facebook, like many other social media platforms, is designed to encompass “social stickiness.” This means that the app is designed to keep users interacting with the app and different services that it offers in order to generate more data. This means that many apps are designed, and use your personal data, to keep you focused on them and keep you wasting time scrolling on them. ⏰

After reading this, you may be wondering where to even begin to get out of the trap of social stickiness. One of the first steps may be to use the “Time Limit” feature on your phone, and set time limits for certain apps. Once this is done, your phone will notify you once you have spent a certain amount of time on each app, allowing you to more deeply consider how much of your free time you give to social media. ⏳

In order to gain a bigger audience, your content needs to be shared between viewers and to bigger audiences. But no one wants to share boring content! So what helps make content spreadable?

1) HUMOR: 🤣 If content makes someone laugh, they are more likely to share it with their peers in order to make them laugh as well. Humor can also help show your audience that you are light-hearted and understand them.

2) UNFINISHED CONTENT: 📝 When content is posted that leaves the viewer wondering or leaves them with a cliffhanger, they are more likely to come back to the page to look for new content, and share with others if it is interesting enough.

3) PARODY / REFERENCES: 🔗 When you reference something in your content that the viewer enjoys, such as music or a TV show, they are likely to share the content with other people that also enjoy what you referenced. Including parodies and references in your content can also help the audience to feel more relatable to you, and make them feel seen and understood.

4) TIMELY CONTROVERSY: ⏳ If you post something that relates to something big going on in the world of media at the moment, such as a divorce or scandal, it is more likely to grab the viewer’s attention. If the content relates to the controversial topic in an interesting way such as being funny or shocking, the viewer is more likely to share your content with their peers, to bring them the same emotions.

- What your goals are and you need to identify them.
- Realize who your audience is and post accordingly.
- Figure out what you want to post and outline it.
- Break down your results and pay close attention to them.

That's okay! Even though social media is intended to be a public forum, you have complete control over who can and cannot see your account/posts! All social media platforms provide easy ways to change your privacy settings! Here are some of your options:

- Public Account: Anyone who views your account can see all of your posts.

- Private Account: Only friends/followers can see your posts.

- Best Friends List: Only the people you select to have access to your best friends list can have access to your posts.

It's that simple! Just remember, social media is an online platform and anything you post will always be there even if you delete it!

It's easy! 😎 Trends are usually found all over the place and are very easy to spot! It is common for these traits to be essential parts of every trend:

- Large amounts of people participating!
- Influencer/Celebrity endorsements!
- Creating a following by the use of hashtags!
- Usually temporary but becomes popular very quickly!

These are just some of the many signs to spot trends! Anything can become a trend and it can be tricky to predict them but it is always fun to watch them grow! 🔎

Make sure to keep your social media safe and secure!
With privacy settings, you may keep you profile close knitted to only who you want to see.
When creating a password do not use a short and simple password that could be easily guessed. Use numbers, symbols and capitalizations to make your password stronger.
You will need to write down your password to not forget and make sure not to use the same password on all sites.
