Each issue is packed with columns, articles, how-to’s, recipes, photos and artwork based on a different theme. Past themes have included religion, s*x, journeys, water, disguises and family. Order a copy or subscription today from our Etsy shop. How can you get involved? We’re always looking for contributors! Email [email protected] to get on our contributor list. You’ll receive one email pe

r month with updates about what we’re looking for. You could also support the zine by taking out an ad or sponsoring an issue. Why “Cockroach”? If there ever is a nuclear attack, people say cockroaches would be the only things left alive. Cockroaches are sustainable. Cockroaches are survivors. The feminist and environmentalist movements are sustainable. They are also full of survivors, battling against society for their causes. Cockroach zine is for them.

Well, it's been a fun few years but it's time to call it quits. The last issue of Cockroach has been released and I'm moving on to focus my energy on other projects.

If you still want to follow what I'm up to, check me out at Meg Crane: The Craft Nerd. I'll be continuing the Cockroach's Stitching Hearts heros through my new business.

Recommendations for similar zines that also pay for content that I can send my contributors to would be greatly appreciated.

The Winnipeg Vegan Handmade Market is going to be run by another group of people. I'll keep this page live for another few months until I have contact details for them and can publicly post that.

Thanks for the years of love and support.

In 2019, contributors will be splitting the $$ that comes in from Patreon, after printing and shipping costs are covered. $1 / month from you can actually help boost what they're all taking to the bank.

Oh I've been so quiet over here. My apologies! I'm figuring out how to run Cockroach in a way that isn't too taxing to my injured brain. And I think I've figured it out!

Cockroach will be taking a more collaborative approach with contributors in 2019.

Feel free to leave comments on any of the documents inside this folder to help me solidify my new direction.

Also, the 2019 themes are listed in the "info" doc. DM me your email and I can officially get you on the contributor list.

Another change I'm considering making is having contributors from each issue group edit. I'd put all the articles into a Google Drive folder and whoever was interested could go through to make spelling / grammatical changes, give feedback, ask questions, etc. With this more collaborative approa...

I'd love to be able to give Cockroach away for free, but a girl's gotta pay her bills, pay her contributors and pay for the odd little vegan cake. However, all the anti-capitalist talk on Vegan Warrior Princesses Attack has got me re-thinking how I behave in this capitalist society.

I've decided to take a new approach to selling Cockroach in order to make it more accessible. It's currently available via Patreon for $1 to $9 a month, with bonuses for those who are able to pay more. When I get the energy, I'll also be changing the Etsy prices to a pay-what-you-can model.

Is it possible to make the pink pussyhat inclusive or do we need to ditch it completely?

https://www.pussyhatproject.com/blog/2018/1/14/the-project-of-pussyhat

There have been critiques about Pussyhat Project and whether Pussyhats should be included in some of the 2018 women’s marches. Some feel that the pink color of the hat excludes people of color from the project. Some feel that the hat is a literal symbol of female anatomy, promoting Trans-Exclusion...

All my reasons why throwing CZ a few bucks a month, if you can, is a good idea.

1. Support artists

Through Cockroach, I support a lot of artists. While I don’t get to pay a lot, I do pay! Much of your money goes to them.

Beyond paying, I also support artists by sharing their work, tagging them in posts and telling friends and family about them. With the writers, I try to give them some feedback on their work and offer them suggestions on other places they can sell their pieces.

By helping me keep Cockroach going, you’re supporting the many, many artists behind me. By helping me increase my issue-ly budget, you’re enabling these artists to make more money.

2. Stitching Hearts projects

Through Cockroach, I constantly run low-cost, low-skill crafting projects that spread love to humans and other animals.

By supporting Cockroach with $1 a month through Patreon, you’re helping me run Stitching Hearts, which has sent thousands of valentines to women’s shelters across Canada (and this year will send to the US as well!) and hundreds of toys to animal shelters. Stitching Hearts has also sent dolls to newcomer children, warm wearables to street people and bookmarks to kids in northern communities.

2018’s projects are:

February / March issue: Bee houses
April / May issue: Friendship bracelets for mosques
June / July issue: Toys for animal shelters
August / September: Games for newcomers
October / November: Matts for street people
December / January: Valentines for clients, staff and volunteers at women’s shelters

The project doesn’t cost a lot, financially speaking, but having Cockroach allows me to advertise current projects, which helps me spread more love. By becoming a patron, you’re enabling me to gain a bigger following, which will lead to these projects being more impactful.

3. Empowering messages

Cockroach contributors tackle a lot of tough issues, but not from a perspective you might expect. The goal of my little zine is to fight hate, spread love and have fun. People should feel empowered and hopeful reading this zine, and the artists keep this in mind when working on their pieces.

Readers leave Cockroach with a game plan for how they can change the world with small, manageable actions.

In a world so full of crap news, Cockroach is a refreshing change.

4. Get cool s**t

Cockroach patrons get s**t for helping out. What you get depends on the level, but some patrons help make decisions such as upcoming themes and Stitching Hearts projects. Others get a little package between each issue with stickers and other fun things.

Plus, you just get to feel good about yourself for supporting such a cool project.

5. Vegan Handmade Market

Without Cockroach, there probably wouldn’t be a Vegan Handmade Market.

Why? Well, through Cockroach I met many of the fantastic people who help make this market happen. It’s also given me a huge base of people to advertise to.

Becoming a patron means you’re helping make this market happen, both in Winnipeg and (announcement!!!) soon to be in Helena.

6. You’d just make me so happy

Cockroach is my baby. I dreamed of it for years. I planned it for months. I love it an incredible amount. From the people I’ve met to the experiences I’ve had because of Cockroach, my life has changed drastically.

You becoming a patron (even if you just sign up for a month and then cancel) would mean the fu***ng world to me. Sharing the page or the Etsy shop or just telling a friend that Cockroach exists would also mean the world to me.

Love this piece.

Please know that Cockroach is currently looking for more artists and writers who are POC, q***r or have disabilities, but not necessarily to write about their experiences with that part of their identity. I'd love a little more diversity on the contributor list.

While a person’s identity is important to their understanding of the world, it does not define who they are.

A lot of us hate V-Day. But imagine how much more it must suck for someone who's single because they just left an abusive relationship.

Help me make the day a tad less depressing by sending handmade valentines to women's shelters. Click the link for more info and for the sign-up sheet.

Our Story

What is Cockroach?

Cockroach is an eco-feminist zine. It publishes art and writing that motivates and inspires people to make their world a better place.

Issues come out every other month and are available through the Etsy shop (temporarily shut down, but it’ll be back in early 2018). Patrons of $5+ at the time of publications also receive a free copy of new issues and women’s shelters across Canada (and now the US!) are offered free subscriptions.
