📍Manchanabele Dam

Manchanabele is a small village located on the outskirts of Bangalore that is known for its picturesque dam and adjoining reservoir.

It is a short 40km drive away from Bangalore and has recently emerged as a popular weekend retreat for the people of the Bangalore because of the peace, natural beauty and serenity offered by the place.

Manchanabele Dam, which is sought out by travellers, adventurers, families and friends, is built over the Arkavathy river.

It is a mighty reservoir that is used to promote farming and irrigation in the nearby areas. The presence of the reservoir has led to the formation of a beautiful lake on which activities such as boating and kayaking are conducted. It is also popular amongst the tourists because of the incredible natural beauty that one can witness near the Manchanabele Dam.

Even though the reservoir was a popular place for people to explore and swim in, it is now cordoned off and cannot be accessed by the public because of a few incidents.

However, the whole expanse of the lake and the reservoir can be seen from a distance and you can catch a stunning sunset from the vicinity of the lake.

📍Avani

Avani is a tiny hamlet in the Mulbagal Taluk (group of villages) of Kolar district, just 80 km away from Bangalore. The first part of my journal describes the history of Avani and the story behind the creation of the Ramalingeswara group of temples that lie at the base of Avani hill or Avani Betta as it is locally called.

Apart from activities for young millennials like hiking or photography, Avani is also a place of considerable antiquity. During ancient times it used to be called Avantika Kshetra and was of great sanctity in this part of Bharatvarsha (India). According to legend, the hill was residence of sage and poet, Valmiki, the author of Ramayana.

For those who are not so familiar with this part of the story of Ramayana – when lady Sita was banished by Rama, her husband, and the king of Ayodhya, it is said that sage Valmiki sheltered her here at his ashram (hermitage). The local folklore goes further to establish that Sita, after being sent to exile, gave birth to her twins Luv and Kush right here at Avani.

📍Kelavarapalli Dam
Kelavarapalli Dam has been constructed on the river Ponniar in Tamil Nadu and rises up to 13.50 m in height with a huge storing capacity. The dam leads the water to the districts of Cuddalore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Vellore. It is about 10 km away from Hosur and is on the road that diverts towards Kelavarapalli, off Bangalore road.

It is a preferred picnic spot for both the residents of Hosur and tourists visiting Hosur for the weekend. Complete with a beautiful children’s park the Kelavarapalli Dam has something for everyone.

For nature lovers, there is the refreshing climate free from all the hustle and bustle and pollution of a city, for bird watchers a treat of various migratory birds including pelicans and spoonbills and for those who have a curiosity about the local culture, one can visit the village of Chennathur adjacent to the reservoir.

Hindus don’t worship cows. We respect, honour and adore the cow. By honouring this gentle animal, who gives more than she takes, we honour all creatures.

Hindus regard all living creatures as sacred – mammals, fishes, birds and more. We acknowledge this reverence for life in our special affection for the cow. At festivals we decorate and honour her, but we do not worship her in the sense that we worship the Deity.

To the Hindu, the cow symbolizes all other creatures. The cow is a symbol of the Earth, the nourisher, the ever-giving, undemanding provider. The cow represents life and the sustenance of life. The cow is so generous, taking nothing but water, grass and grain. It gives and gives and gives of its milk, as does the liberated soul give of his spiritual knowledge. The cow is so vital to life, the virtual sustainer of life, for many humans. The cow is a symbol of grace and abundance. Veneration of the cow instils in Hindus the virtues of gentleness, receptivity and connectedness with nature.

📍Krishnagiri

I returned to my place of comfort just down the street from my house.  The serene environment of the lake granted me the escape I needed from reality at times. My familiar escape never lost its exquisiteness, which is why it was the perfect cure for any stressful time in my life.  I sat on the uneven, bumpy bench looking up to the sky at the beautiful white birds that flew over my head and the stunning pink and purple sky that appeared too gorgeous to be real. The wind rushed through my hair, swaying the trees back and forth, making me feel that I was not alone on the lake. In fact, nature happens to be the best company of all. The beautiful white birds, stunning purple and pink sky, the swaying tree, the shallow blue water, and the loud gray ducks never ceased to amaze me. The scenery was as striking as paradise, and I couldn’t help but soak in the colors of the different flowers around it. It was impossible to feel anything but tranquility in a place that covered itself in pure beauty.

As I gazed out in front of me, I noticed all the dainty houses that were lined up across the lake. The houses were painted in white, which brought out all of the colors around them. Although to others they appeared as normal houses, I felt their presence was much more than that. They added to the splendor of my serene environment because although I knew people resided in the houses, they appeared just as lonely as I felt sometimes. When the lights were out inside of them, there was nothing to give them company apart from the nature. I stared to the right of the bench to the large bridge looking to see if anybody was crossing, yet to my surprise there was still nobody in sight. I wished I could just bottle up the feeling of the peacefulness and always have it with me in

📍Gandikota - Grand Canyon of india

Gandikota is a village on the right bank of the river Penna, 15 km from Jammalamudugu in Kadapa district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Gandikota area was first identified and made Sand fort in 1123 by Kakatiya Raja of nearby Bommanapalle village and a subordinate of Ahavamalla Someswara I, Kalyani Chalukya ruler. Gandikota came under the rule of Kakatiya dynasty from 1239 A.D to 1304 A.D and ruled by their various subordinates.

Though Gandikota remains open throughout the year, the best time to visit is during the months of September to February. The summer months are especially to be avoided as the weather is hot and humid with temperatures going all the way to 45 degrees Celsius.

There are no direct trains from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, or Chennai that lead you to this town. The nearest railway station is Jammalamadugu that is located 18 km from Gandikota. If you plan to come by train to Jammalamadugu, catching a train from Vijayawada Junction is a good option as it has direct connectivity.

One can take the National Highway 44 (NH44) from Bangalore and reach Gandikota in 5-6 hours. Be prepared to encounter a few patches of rough drive for a few kilometres, which fortunately wouldn't last for a long duration. The roads are quite smooth overall, and one can surely enjoy the drive.12-Dec-2021

📍 krs dam , Mysore

Entry timings - 6 30 am to 9 pm

One of the famous dams of South India, Krishna Raja Sagara Dam is often called as KRS Dam. Named after Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV of Mysore, this dam is built over the River Cauvery/Kaveri; near to the conjunction of three rivers namely, Cauvery, Hemavathi & Lakshmana Thirtha. A major source of drinking water for Mysore and Bangalore city, KRS dam is also one of the main sources of irrigation water for Mandya and Mysore. Along with this, it major purpose is to ensure power supply to the Shivanasamudra hydroelectric power station. With a length of 3 km, this dam also boasts of being the first irrigation dam of India.
