"ART DECO" SOLD OUT - Sensations Magazine Thematic Supplement 13, "Art Deco," has sold out all of its original print run on its debut date. This has happened before in our publication's history, and am pleased to see it happen again tonight.

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE SUPPLEMENT 12, "ART" - Just a reminder that the postmark deadline for submissions is Saturday, October 8.

Just an update - the Sensations Magazine Creative Events Series is now in its 35th season. We never went over to Zoom - even in the pandemic, we managed to sustain our live-in-person readings (though one of them was in a large field, with participants separated by 9 foot squares of yellow police tape). We have one more reading planned for 2022 - one weekend in December, which will be the "Art" supplement debut.

"GLOBAL WARMING" PROGRESS REPORT - Injured my back recently, so giving myself a break today and inserting myself into a hot tub, then resuming production on Supplement 10, "Global Warming" on Tuesday, November 10. Got a lot of other things settled here during the long break, but time to refocus, and now ready to get this thing done. Thank you all for your patience.

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE 2020 PLANS, IN LIGHT OF COVID-19 - The "social isolation" and lack of travel opportunity (chosen or forced by authorities) is going to have a dramatic and psychologically adverse impact on all Americans in the months ahead. I have been thinking on how I wish to keep the Sensations Magazine literary community focused, productive, and socially connected in these trying times.

Based on the statements of Anthony Fauci and the CDC, I believe this is going to get much worse before it gets better - and I believe "social distancing" will not end by March 31, nor April 15, but drag on all spring and summer, possibly into August. I question whether much of America will be able to endure this, or continue to cooperate voluntarily with this for that long - and do commend those who are making efforts to play along to the degree they can.

Here is my planned schedule of some of what I can do, and aim to do, as Publisher and Event Coordinator, during 2020:

1. MARCH - Will be in the print shop this week, constructing the last copies of the "Dance" supplement for those who purchased it previously, along with missing copies needed to backfill the Library of Congress and Poets House collections.

2. APRIL - I am presuming now that all public April National Poetry Month events will be cancelled. In April, I will post one poem a day of readings that Kleber filmed of me, on my YouTube channel "David Messineo." I again encourage everyone here to take a free subscription to my channel now.

3. MAY - Sensations Magazine has one "round robin" reading for 2020 subscribers scheduled for Sunday May 24. The outdoor venue lends itself to a small, by invitation "social distance" style reading, and if permitted, we may try that. So for now, I still plan to hold that reading on that date, so keep that on your calendar for now.

4. JUNE - All currently paid 2020 subscribers have been sent the "Global Warming" poetry submission requirements. Check your non-Facebook mail; either they should be there, or you didn't pay your 2020 subscription renewal yet, and it's due. Non-subscribers never before published in our pages should submit poems via our 2020 Best Newcomer Contest, now up on the Contest button at http://www.sensationsmag.com . The postmark deadline date, for all, remains Monday June 29, 2020.

5. JULY TO DECEMBER: PUBLICLY RELEASING SOME OF THE NATIONAL TOUR 2000-2002 VIDEO FOOTAGE, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - In July to December 2000, and again in January and August 2002, I toured and featured in 48 states, with Kleber by my side in all of them except Hawaii, and him filming over 24 hours of video footage across America. I have been recording small electronic clips by cellphone of him, us, and some of our filmed scenic "poetry videos" oft the TV set (fastest & cheapest means), and plan to release that footage online, should our state of social isolation continue through 2020.

6. AUGUST - Sensations Magazine Supplement 10, "Global Warming," is still scheduled to debut on Sunday August 2, afternoon, in an outdoor space in Lafayette, NJ. I still plan to hold that reading as of this point, if permitted to do so, so keep that date on your calendar for now. One way or another, as long as I am capable, that Supplement will debut on that date, either in person, or (if all public gatherings are legally banned) shipped by mail.

7. THROUGHOUT 2020 - Those who wish to stay in contact with me may do so by telephone, email, Facebook messenger, or commenting on Facebook posts. I will continue to respond promptly.

For now, I remain "still-long-standing patriarch" of the Sensations Magazine extended family, and hope for your continued good health and well-being, as we (yet again) deal with something we never expected to deal with, partly due to more callous and reckless irresponsibility of Donald Trump and his associates. "Remember, remember, this Third of November"!

THURS NOV 15 - WORLD WAR I IN POETRY, PART 2 - Sent about 60 private invitations on Facebook to my last reading in Teaneck, NJ for 2018, where I'll be bringing 7-8 guest poets with me, including a guest musician, to honor and remember the 100th anniversary of World War I, in poetry, quotations, and song. If coming, please mark that on the Facebook invite, so I know. Walk through the entrance down the hall to the door with frosted glass. Please arrive on time, as we prefer to begin right at 7pm, since some guests will be driving a distance. Thanks! (This is a public event. I limited my invitations to those I thought could make the drive. If you were not directly invited by me, and wish to come, please do so!)

Include your subscription payment with your submissions - again, no guarantee of publication based on taking a 2-issue subscription for 2017 (or any year, for that matter). COMING 2017 - "THE GATHERING STORM" - SENSATIONS MAGAZINE NOW PUBLISHING NEW POETRY, FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2012, TO BRING US TO OUR 35th ANNIVERSARY IN 2022 - It's not a return but a revival, since we never left. Poets on here should check their home mail this week for my personal invitation to submit material to "The Gathering Storm," where we address The Man Who Shall Not Be Named and his cronies. Poems are due postmarked Fri Jan 20, so this will be a quick turnaround. The two-issue subscription will include a back issue of my choosing, based upon my knowledge of what you currently have or what subject I feel might be of greatest interest to you, which I may discuss with you one-on-one once your subscription payment arrives. Subscription also includes being invited to all readings scheduled for 2017. Going forward, submitting to Sensations Magazine will be by personal invitation of the publisher only for 2017 and 2018, then opening to targeted segments of the general public for 2019 and 2020. Goal is to do one new document per year, bringing us to our 35th anniversary in 2022. If you have NOT received your invitation by this Saturday and are a poet interested in this project (some were excluded due to their politics or lack of recent support), ask me for an invitation by private message, and we'll discuss it. Thanks to those who continued their subscriptions from 2013 to 2016 - you're the reason we've decided to resume publishing new material again.

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE ISSUE 6 REPRINTING RELEASE ON SAT NOV 12 IN NJ - Private invitations are being sent to our luncheon/reading debut for current subscribers for Issue 6, featuring the Rediscovering America in Poetry Research Series segment examining the first impressions in poetry of present-day Arizona and New Mexico, written by a Spanish conquistador visiting these regions at the turn of the 16th century. Issues 5 and 6 explore poetry written in Spanish in the 1500s by those in what is now the United States. The 2-issue $25 subscription includes both of these issues, only available to those who take a subscription before November 12. If interested, please private message me to set aside copies for you, and for information how to make payment.

SUN MAY 28, 2016, 7PM - THE SENSATIONS MAGAZINE MEMORIAL READING - Join me as I don suit and tie and bring a respectful memorial program, reading one poem each from all the poets published in Sensations Magazine who passed away between 1987 and 2016 - a once-in-a-lifetime event. In the open mic, poets are encouraged to share elegies: poems written by poets you know who have passed away, and/or poems you've written for family/friends/fellow poets who have passed away. Event takes place at the North Jersey Literary Series at Classic Quiche, 330 Queen Anne Road, Teaneck, NJ, back performance room (glass door at end of hallway). There is a $10/person cover toward food/non-alcoholic drink. This will be the last Sensations Magazine program for 2016 open to the general public; remaining events will be for 2016 active subscribers. Hope you will join me this Saturday night in honoring those we've lost in the poetry community.

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE ISSUE 42, "20TH ANNIVERSARY SPOKEN WORD ISSUE," FALL/WINTER 2007 - RELEASE DATE SUN JUNE 29, 2008

"History matters," as I said on page 4. Due to the extensive size, scope, and research involved in Issue 42 (as usual, printed from computer and copy shop, hand-collated, and hand-bound), the 366-page 8-1/2 x 11 sized issue scheduled for Fall/Winter 2007 was delayed by several months, into the summer of 2008. The largest issue ever released by Sensations Magazine, and one of the five largest literary magazine issues released by anyone in New Jersey in the 100 years from 1916 to 2015 - Issue 42 was created by selecting 'lost' poems that appeared on video in various segments of our reading series, and involved my watching over 250 hours of poetry readings on video, filmed across 15 years within one month. Divided into 15 parts, Issue 42 opened with a 70-page spreadsheet that outlined in great details all my activities in poetry since Dec 1979, including all events sponsored by Sensations Magazine, and readings I'd attended sponsored by others (making the spreadsheet a rare detailed document of the much larger tri-state poetry reading scene as well). Along with a massive amount of poetry from 80 participants - those joining me as published in that issue and still connected here on Facebook include Joel Allegretti, Doris C. Baker, Caterina Belvedere, Norma Ketzis Bernstock, Dennis Wayne Bressack, Sara Claytor, Dani Donatacci, Juditha A. Dowd, Frank Finale, Ellen Foos, Davidson Garrett, Phyllis Jean Green, Patrick Hammer, Jr, Peter Jaworowski, H. Alonzo Jennings, Paul Kiritsis, Steven H. Koenig, Dean Kostos, Denise LaNeve, Thomas E. Meell, Vicki Moss, Paul Nash, Pina Pipino, Suzanne Gili Post, Maude Carolan Pych, Brett Rutherford, John Salacan, Dianalee Velie, Galen Warden, Jacqueline de Weever, and Barbara R. Williams-Hubbard. Part 11 documented the history of New Jersey's literary magazines in the 20th and 21st centuries, and the longest poetry reading series in New Jersey. Part 13 featured reviews of 12 poetry books. To cover the entire sweep of 20 years of highly active history 3 events were held, the major one being at The Chateau in Spring Lake, NJ, featuring airings of video clips of dance performances, music acts, and more created and sponsored by my publication and its two parent companies (Gold Coast Performing Arts, Inc. and The Six Centuries Club of America, Inc.) on a 40" plasma TV screen. Included in these clips were the many dance performances by Kleber de Freitas, and clips from our highly successful 250th anniversary celebration of the birth of the Marquis de Lafayette in September 2007, drawing our largest audience ever (150) for poetry and music. Both Sensations Magazine and our reading series would continue with a smaller following in the years ahead, but 2008 was the year in which we honored - and closed out - these earlier eras.

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE ISSUE 41, "20TH ANNIVERSARY FICTION ISSUE," SPRING/SUMMER 2007 - RELEASE DATE MAY 5, 2007

The first of our 2-issue celebration of our 20th anniversary featured 20 stories written by 17 authors, including the following 7 still connected here on Facebook: Tana Polansky Maurer, Vicki Moss, Dorian Tenore-Bartilucci, Denise La Neve, Barrie Creedon, Andria Nacina Cole, and James Vance Elliott. The full 150-page issue was published on heavy, high-gloss 32lb paper. There was no official public debut of this issue, which was simply mailed to subscribers. I believe it was completed by May 5. The front cover photograph was taken by me, a block away from my house.

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE ISSUE 40, "RETRO" - COMPLETED DECEMBER 2006, PUBLIC RELEASE DATE SAT JAN 13, 2007

The 300-page "Retro" issue was the first of two Sensations Magazine issues to reach 300 or more pages, uniting 40 writers to write new material on all of the same themes presented in Sensations Magazines issued between 1994 to 2005. This unusual approach created a literary "parallel universe" to our earlier issues, bridging the past and the present. Of the 40 writers in that 2006 issue, those still linked here on Facebook include about half of us: me, Doris C. Baker, Dennis Wayne Bressack, Ellen Foos, Davidson Garrett, Robert A. Geise, John Graham-Pole, Phyllis Jean Green, Anne Haehl, Steven Koenig, Denise La Neve, Paul Nash, Laurie A. Pine, Pina Pipino, Martta Rose, Brett Rutherford, Elizabeth Anne Socolow, Dianalee Velie, and Michelle Yaney. As stated on the opening/copyright page, Issue 40 was "the fourth largest NJ literary magazine published in the 21st century, and among the top 20 in size in NJ across the past 80 years." The earlier themes were revisited in the first 20 parts of the issue, followed by a coda of new material - one poem per writer, on the theme of "What the Future Could Bring." The issue closed with the research article "80 Years of Invitations to Publish: The History of New Jersey's Active Literary Magazines, 1927-2006." Those mentioned in that article by name and connected here on Facebook include me, Sander Zulauf, and Deborah LaVeglia. The "Retro" debut brought us all back to a familiar site from our past: a last blast at Newark Public Library's Centennial Hall, a 5-hour marathon reading with live and video performances, and about 40 in attendance.

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE SUPPLEMENT 2, WINTER 2005, "LOSING A CHILD AND OTHER LOVED ONES" - RELEASED BEFORE DECEMBER 31, 2005

A lasting testament to the process of grieving - and attempting to move forward - across a 20-year period, Supplement 2 partnered together poets long associated with Sensations Magazine who suffered the unthinkable: the loss of children and family members due to a variety of horrific circumstances. Dennis Wayne Bressack, Dianalee Velie, and Galen Warden are among the poets who shared their insights in the issue; Galen also contributed interior artwork. Our goal was to utilize Supplement 2 as a kind of group writing catharsis, while raising money for charity. Sensations Magazine incurred the full cost of production, and donated the full $10 per copy to charitable organizations - primarily the Velie Memorial Fund, but also the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Poets in the issue contributed photographs of the people they lost, which formed the front cover montage. Along with the moving poems within, Supplement 2 included a list of websites and book resources that people could turn to if faced with this situation. In the 10 years since Supplement 2 debuted, it has been used by grief counselors, parents, and anyone dealing with the most personal kind of loss. Though we conceived an idea for a public debut ceremony for Supplement 2 (detailed in the 2014 "Ephemera" bound document), we simply mailed the Supplement out when it was completed by that year's end. As for reader reaction, one quote that stands with me was one by Gilda Kreuter, "I am reading this issue, and sobbing. It's an incredible literary achievement."

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE SUPPLEMENT 1, FALL 2005 "THE 2004 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, ONE YEAR LATER" - RELEASED TUESDAY NOVEMBER 8, 2005

Since 2001, we had pumped out four Sensations Magazine issues per year, each year - sold them all out, reduced our debt, but needed to bring our phase of quarterly printing to a close. I was away in Brazil from late August to early October, and when I returned, I still had two more items due for publication by year's end. Staff and I agreed we also wanted a less expensive item in our product line: something that would cost $10 vs. our usual $15-30 per issue, but also something that would have more literary heft to it than our previous "under $10" foray, the Spring 2003 "Allergies" issue. I decided to try something we'd never done before: three columns per page, with poems running one right after the other in small type. We decided to go with the still-hot topic at the time: the 2004 Presidential Election. Our staff and I thought we'd get something a little more balanced than a barrage of anti-George Bush poems, but a barrage it was - yet one that was at times amusing, well-penned, and right on the money with criticism. A total of 17 poets contributed to the poetry-only supplement; those still connected here in the Supplement include Doris C. Baker, Davidson Garrett, LaMar Giles, Steven Koenig and me. The Election Day debut at the Grover Cleveland Birthplace in New Jersey was a nice well-attended affair set in two rooms: an opener in the parlor, then the reading inside the site's colonial-style kitchen. Supplement 1 (from a sales standpoint) ultimately proved to be one of our most popular items in several years, its total sales exceeding those of many of our magazine issues, despite its "bare bones interior design" and the comparatively dowdy cover photograph (a photo I took, reflecting the huge rise in gas prices under the Bush administration - the best I could come up with on short notice, and the one cover photo file that, tonight, flatly refuses to upload here!

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE ISSUE 39, SUMMER 2005 "VACATION" ISSUE - RELEASED SUNDAY AUGUST 5, 2005

"Vacation" was one of my favorite issues, thanks to the fine photography submitted from around the world to open each of our 7-continent themed sections, and the many sensational poems and stories that followed them in the 116-page issue. Of our photographers, Brian Glosemeyer and Nicole Fey (both on p. 7) are still connected with us here on Facebook (poet Daniel Green and his artist-wife Leona contributed the "Antarctica" photo, part of their trip there respectively at ages 90 and 82); among the authors published in Issue 39, we count Dennis Wayne Bressack, Davidson Garrett, Anne Haehl, Steve Koenig, Dean Kostos, Pina Pipino, and Dianalee Velie among our current Facebook connections. Issue 39 concluded with my 2-page Message from the Publisher on pages 114 and 115, summarizing financial matters such as debt, book and magazine sales, and coming plans. For those who still have this issue, it provides some excellent insights into the matters that had and continue to concern me as Publisher. The Summer 2005 issue concluded with this prophetic paragraph: "There are three things that are certain in life: death, taxes, and (presuming I'm still alive) eight new Sensations Magazine issues between 2008 and 2012, bringing us to our ultimate goal: 50 issues completed, across 25 years of independent publishing. Then, as Elmer Fudd would say, "That's all, folks." That was the plan, but thanks to those who are taking Second Printing subscriptions, we're able to extend print production of magazine issues - and our associated Creative Events Series - a little while longer.

And the debut of the "Vacation Issue" was our all-day Seven Continents of Asbury event, where seven independent venues in Asbury Park, NJ joined forces to represent the seven continents, with readings, music, and dance performances held at different locations throughout the day. One of those performances was the (thus far) "last dance" in public of Kleber, as he revived his Amazon Indian tribal dance in a café featuring a painted tree backdrop, all immortalized in photography and on video.

SENSATIONS MAGAZINE ISSUE 38, SPRING 2005 - RELEASED SUNDAY MAY 8, 2005
Front and back cover photographer Karine Laval brought us out of the winter doldrums, with her summery pool photos, taken in Cascais, Portugal. The 92-page issue was divided into two parts: "Spring and Other Musings," and "Fiction." Beth Cagle opened the issue with her poem "Breathing Under Water," and (among the others still connected here on Facebook), the issue included poetry by Vicki Moss, Dianalee Velie, Davidson Garrett, LaMar Giles, Dani Donatacci, Denise LaNeve, Doris C. Baker, and Michelle Yaney, and fiction by Diana E. Sheets and Dianalee Velie, whose poetry book First Edition was among four books reviewed in the back of the issue. Our issue debut was a packed house at the Manchester Inn in Ocean Grove, with our "Four Seasons" themed Mother's Day brunch, which featured me, Davidson Garrett, Vera Gelvin, and Vicki Moss reading; singer/vocal interpreter Karen Kelly; and Kleber doing Amazon Indian tribal dance. Prior to that, the year featured me doing two Anne Bradstreet lectures, one for the Vassar Club of New Jersey. June 21 gave us an upscale reading in the Secret Room at Richie Cecere's Supper Club; July 10 brought us that 300,000 mile turn celebration of our 1991 Pontiac Sunbird convertible, with cake being served on the car hood in our backyard, now in Bloomfield, NJ; July 25 brought us the first Sensations Magazine reading in NYC in four years, with our "Sensations Does Manhattan" Sunset Reading at Hudson River Park, and 10 of us on picnic blankets.

Our Story

The Sensations Magazine Creative Events Series is one of the 25 longest-lasting poetry reading series still active in America. Started by David Messineo in 1988 as the first poetry series in New Jersey to totally ban smoking, in all its travelling venues, new events have happened in the series each year since. Under this umbrella name, we’ve held acoustic music performances, brass band concerts, cabaret shows, concerts, dance performances, history lectures, multidisciplinary events, poetry lectures, poetry readings, poetry writing workshops, proscenium-stage shows, and writing retreats. From 2019 forward, the Sensations Magazine Creative Events Series annually will hold 4 events - primarily poetry readings - that are private for active subscribers, while Publisher David Messineo will hold book tours from 2019 to 2022 that will include open mic readings attached to his feature performances, open to the general public. Between these two tracks, Sensations Magazine looks forward to continuing to be a creative force for public performance opportunities, well into the 2020s. This site will function as a means of publicizing upcoming events open to the general public on Facebook - notification of private events for annual subscribers will be sent by private email. This site, when completed, also will be a document-by-document recap of all of the publishing activities of Sensations Magazine. (As of January 2019, the site covers the production history of Issues 1-42 and Supplements 1&2, 1987-2007. More recap write-ups will be coming in the next few years.) Whether with us for decades, joined recently, or considering hopping on board our creative train as it continues its journey forward, sit back, relax, and welcome to our online living room!
