Indigenous Peoples’s Day is a protest.

It’s important to remember this, especially now. What we’re seeing in Palestine is Indigenous resistance and decolonization. 🇵🇸⚡️

Indigenous Peoples’ Day doesn’t exist to celebrate ourselves or to preform our culture. Indigenous Peoples’ Day exists because we challenge settler colonialism. It exists because we are anti-imperialists, internationalists, and believers in decolonization.

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day to those in struggle across the world. ✊🏽🪶

ANNOUNCEMENT: We're hosting a new wish list! FREEDOM TO READ is a Native-led project of Red Media, which aims to alleviate the financial and societal obstacles that create book deserts in and around Indigenous communities.

To support the project, we're extending our trade discounts to the Freedom to Read crew--and also to their supporters (YOU!!).

You can see the books they're hoping to distribute to communities in Tiwa and Diné territory this fall by heading to our homepage or clicking the link in our bio. All books are priced at wholesale cost and you will not pay for shipping or tax when placing an order. With your help, we'll buy as many books as we can and ship them out to Albuquerque for distribution.

Please consider supporting this rad project as the back-to-school season is upon us. Together, we can make it happen!

Groundings Podcast
The Framing of Leonard Peltier

Author and activist Nick Estes () discusses the war waged by the U.S. government against the American Indian Movement, and the framing of political prisoner Leonard Peltier.

Nick joins the show to provide a comprehensive and riveting breakdown of the struggles faced by Leonard Peltier, one of the longest held political prisoners in the world, incarcerated for almost five decades. We dive into the history of the American Indian Movement (AIM), the blood counter-insurgency war waged by the U.S. government against AIM, the critical implications of Peltier's case, and the broader context of Indigenous resistance in the United States.

In a recent article, Nick writes: "The way Leonard Peltier tells it, he was a criminal the day he was born — but not by choice. The seventy-eight-year-old Anishinaabe and Dakota elder says his “aboriginal sin” was being born Indian in a country founded on Indians’ forced disappearance."

Our new home/campus in Española is a beautiful oasis, just waiting to welcome our communities for gatherings, meetings, classes, workshops, and other events. Our Environmental, Gender, Healing, and Reproductive Program staff will have their own dedicated spaces in which to work, creating much more spaciousness than we’ve had in our current office.

So much is needed to make the new campus fully ready for this, including…
• Office furniture, desks and filing cabinets for staff
• Electric Entrance gates
• IT Upgrades
• Security System and Fire Alarm
• Audio Visual System for Conference Room
• Audio Visual System for Grounds

The costs for all these and many more expenses quickly add up and we need your support to cover them. Our goal is to raise at least $50,000 by September 15 to make this transition possible.

Will you give a gift today to help us fulfill the potential of this new home?

Make a donation through this Facebook fundraising page: https://www.facebook.com/donate/235753222683529/

Or through our own secure donation portal: https://tewa-women-united.snwbll.com/new-chapter

"Elizabeth Cook-Lynn, age 92, of Rapid City, South Dakota passed away July 5th 2023. Our hearts are heavy as we share our grief with family and friends here. She had been admitted to the hospital on Monday afternoon with a touch of pneumonia which developed into a lung infection. She didn’t suffer. Liz we love you and are grateful to have been present to send you on your journey.

She was a very private person and had requested no public ceremonies." —Marnie Cook, daughter

Listen to the editors and contributors to The Mohawk Warrior Society: A Handbook on Sovereignty and Survival on the Podcast with , discussing the new book of texts and art by Louis Karoniaktajeh Hall, a prolific Kanien’kehá:a painter and writer from Kahnawake, whose work continues to inspire generations of Indigenous people today. Listen at the link in our bio.

About the book

The first collection of its kind, this anthology by members of the Mohawk Warrior Society uncovers a hidden history and paints a bold portrait of the spectacular experience of Kanien'kehá:ka survival and self-defense. Providing extensive documentation, context, and analysis, the book features foundational writings by prolific visual artist and polemicist Louis Karoniaktajeh Hall (1918–1993)—such as his landmark 1979 pamphlet The Warrior’s Handbook, as well as selections of his pioneering artwork. This book contains new oral history by key figures of the Rotisken'rhakéhte's revival in the 1970s and tells the story of the Warriors’ famous flag, their armed occupation of Ganienkeh in 1974, and the role of their constitution, the Great Peace, in guiding their commitment to freedom and independence. We hear directly the story of how the Kanien'kehá:ka Longhouse became one the most militant resistance groups in North America, gaining international attention with the Oka Crisis of 1990. This autohistory of the Rotisken'rhakéhte is complemented by a Mohawk history timeline from colonization to the present, a glossary of Mohawk political philosophy, and a new map of Iroquoia in Mohawk language. At last, the Mohawk Warriors can tell their own story with their own voices, and to serve as an example and inspiration for future generations struggling against the environmental, cultural, and social devastation cast upon the modern world.
