Freedom to Read - Book Pick 📚✊🏽🌈

Red Scare: The State’s Indigenous T*rrorist
By Joanne Barker

In chapter 1 of Red Scare: The State’s Indigenous T*rrorist, Barker makes the argument that Indigenous peoples are represented as t*rrorists by the state in the service of imperialism. Barker uses historical context and analysis from Indigenous scholars, feminists, and activists to support this argument.

Portrayals and rhetoric of Indigenous peoples as t*rrorists in society have contributed to public support for ongoing colonialism, resource extraction, and violence.

By comparing the U.S. and Canada the author hopes to show how Indigenous representation is an effective means for states to deflect accountability for genocide, exploitation of culture, water and mineral contamination, and violence. This approach helps readers gain a better understanding of how these negative stereotypes and portrayals have been used to justify harmful actions against Indigenous communities and advance imperialism.

Slide 2: The timeline reflects historical references discussed in the chapter.

Bismarck is celebrating it's 150th Anniversary in 2022 and this week we feature Harriet Skye, one of Bismarck's remarkable women in history.
Harriet Skye (1931–2018) was a multimedia journalist who worked in print, radio, television, and film. A graduate of New York University film school, she became the first Native American woman to have her own television show. “Indian Country Today”, which first aired in 1972, a public-affairs show that ran for 11 years on KFYR-TV in Bismarck and was televised across five states.
Skye’s Lakota name, Makhpiya To Win, translates as Blue Skye Woman. She was a Húŋkpapȟa Lakota and member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. In in addition to her television program, Skye had a career in print media, editing the Standing Rock and United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) newspapers. She frequently served in key leadership positions on city, state, and national boards that promoted the advancement of Native American people. Dr. Skye was inducted into the North Dakota Native American Hall of Honor in 2016 in recognition of her educational leadership.
Many thanks to the Bismarck Historic Preservation Commission for their support.

2023 was a year of growth for Freedom to Read. We adapted to changing conditions, interests, and hopes for the program. Thank you to everyone who contributed, it allowed us to distribute as many books as we did. We hope to distribute more books focusing on political education, history, and children's books in the future.
Recently, Freedom to Read updated our book wish list to include written works about Palestine. The intention is to distribute to bookclubs, political education centers, libraries etc in hopes of strengthening Native and Palestinian solidarity. It is vital for Indigenous peoples to offer unwavering support to Palestinians and understand our solidarity has deep roots. To showcase this, we put together a recommended reading list. The recommended reading list doesn’t cover the vast and rich traditions of analysis, storytelling, and resistance but it is a snapshot of the bigger picture and of the knowledge we must carry forward.
