This year, 2,958 dengue cases and two fatalities have been reported in Ecuador, with the majority occurring in the coastal regions of Guayas, El Oro, and Manabi, according to the Public Health Ministry. Francisco Perez, the Health Ministry's undersecretary for national health surveillance, claims that the recent spike in cases is due to the flooding in tropical areas.

The Health Ministry in reported its first case of human transmission of in a 9-year-old girl on Tuesday, marking a rare case of human infection a month after the country declared an animal health emergency.

Human illness from bird flu infections has ranged from no symptoms to mild illness to severe disease resulting in death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which also stated that human-to-human transmission is extremely rare.

Last year, bird flu wiped out tens of millions of birds in the United States, which reported the first human case in April.

To prevent the disease from spreading, many of the birds were slaughtered. Humans and animals in the area where the child was infected in Ecuador's central province of Bolivar were being closely monitored for transmission, according to the Health Ministry.

Ecuador’s president Guillermo Lasso said Tuesday that and will sign a free trade agreement after almost a year of negotiations, the deal expected to boost growth in the South American country.

President Guillermo Lasso tweeted, “Good news to start 2023. The FTA negotiation between China and Ecuador has been successfully concluded.”

He added, “Our exports will have preferential access to the largest market in the world, and our industries will be able to acquire machinery and inputs at lower costs.”

China is one of Ecuador's most important trading partners, with annual bilateral trade valued at more than $10 billion.

According to the Quito trade ministry, it was Ecuador's main non-oil trade partner in the first half of 2022.

It said no date had been set for the formal signing of the agreement, which would take place after formalities were completed.

"Good news to start 2023. The negotiation between China and Ecuador has been successfully concluded," Lasso tweeted.

With the deal, the country’s exports will have preferential access to China and it’s manufacturers will be able to acquire machinery and inputs at lower costs, Lasso added.

Five governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have challenged the party leadership to sanction them for rejecting Atiku Abubakar as a presidential candidate.

The G-5, or the five disgruntled governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have said that they are not afraid of any punishment from the party leadership.

Multiple local sources have confirmed that the G-5 governors reportedly met with Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress, in London and negotiated for his support.

The PDP claimed to be unaware of the meeting and stated that the governors were simply on vacation in the UK.

On Wednesday morning, reported that a spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) confirmed after a meeting in Abuja that the G5 Governors can be disciplined by the party.

BREAKING: Reports

Seven heavily armed men stormed the Napoleon Davila Hospital in , province, on Sunday and took four nurses hostage.

The National Police then staged a rescue operation and entered the hospital.

According to Col. Alex Salgado, chief of the Chone police district, the armed men intended to kill a 16-year-old hitman who was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries on Saturday night after they attempted to kill him.

According to police records, those apprehended range in age from 19 to 31 years old.

Bryan Steven Ch. C. (19 years old), Jean Carlos AB (22 years old), Emiliano Adolfo CC (22 years old), José Osorio BB (25 years old), José Adrián VZ (28 years old), and Agustn Leonardo CB represent Ecuador.

According to Edwin Noguera, commander of Police Zone 4, the criminals entered "well armed and not afraid to shoot" at the police.

While at least 100 patients and medical personnel were inside the hospital, police conducted a rescue operation.

The criminals and the officers had a brief gunfight on the second floor of the hospital.

Despite this, no one was injured, despite some glass and windows being shattered.

Shuar Arutam indigenous people of Ecuador said on Friday they will not permit mining on their territory, and try to prevent the operation for a large copper mining operation.

This development happens after a court ruled their rights that prior consultation was violated.

In September, Ecuador's Constitutional Court ruled the environmental permit granted in 2011 for the major San Carlos Panantza copper project mandated consultation with the Shuar Arutam community. But, such consultation wasn't carried out.

Indigenous community leaders gathered in Puyo argued that the ruling given by the court has annulled the environmental license held by ExplorCobres SA, a unit of China's CRCC-Tongguan Investment.

Josefina Tunki, community president said, "Companies do not have to continue granting concessions on our lands, we will not accept more entries into our territories. We will always be ready to defend our autonomous lands".
