This book of photographs complements the classic travel book Travels in Taiwan: Exploring Ilha Formosa--on six separate and arduous trips, the author deliberately headed for the areas of Taiwan neglected by other travel journalists in a singular feat of endurance and sustained curiosity. Our next title is a novel called Estrangement. Announcement to follow.

Set in the fictional British seaside resort of Broadgate in the 1980s and 2010s, Estrangement is a compelling coming-of-age story that also examines the lifelong consequences of a tragic familial alienation.

‘Estrangement engages us not only with Heath’s characters whose plights speak to our times but also with the critical intellectual debates of the era they are fictionalised in'. Wayne Stagg.

West of Arabia: A Journey Home is top-ranked in two categories on Amazon.com
#1 New Release in North Africa Travel
#1 New Release in Eritrea Travel Guides

An immensely enjoyable and readable account of a solo overland journey from Saudi Arabia to the UK via Eritrea, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Morocco. The author takes you off the beaten track to places most people would not consider going to and in doing so shows just how much there is to see and understand about places we normally ever hear about in the news. From the people to towns and monuments most people have never heard of, the author brings these distant cultures to life in a very insightful and informative way that challenges your preconceptions. I would definitely recommend it.

Preparation for the publication of West of Arabia: A Journey Home is going well. Below is a review of the original edition of the book published on Goodreads by Denise.

"To say the author, Gary Heath, is not your average travel writer is the ultimate understatement. Mr Heath decided at the end of a teaching assignment in Saudi Arabia, to return to his native UK. But a simple plane ride back home was not for him. He decided to travel back across the Arabian peninsula, hopefully through Yemen, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt and then west by way of Libya, Algeria and Morocco and then finally to the UK by way of Spain.
We are much richer for his experience. Along the way, we read about his encounters with soldiers, dealers on the black market, students, Bedouins and political activists as well as visits to historical sites and stays at rundown hotels. Mr Heath was in the unique position of travelling through the region just before the fall of President Mubarak and Libyan President Gaddafi. In his book, he gives just the right blend of historical background leading up to the political situations in each country he visited, as well as recounting his own personal experiences and those of others, such as a visit Bill Gates made to Libya, by mooring his private yacht off the coast and flying in by his private helicopter to visit the "nice beaches" while his wife went shopping. This book is a must-read, along with his first book "Travels in Taiwan."

"Faced with the need to travel from Saudi Arabia to the UK, Gary Heath made the unusual decision to take the overland route. His three principles were to stay on the ground, avoid back-tracking, and do minimal sightseeing. The ever-changing situation in the Middle East meant that the rules had to be bent on occasion, yet as he travelled across Eritrea, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Morocco, he succeeded in beating his own path around the tourist traps, gaining unique insights into Arabic culture as he went. Written just a few months before the Arab Spring of 2011, this book reveals many of the underlying tensions that were to explode onto the world stage just shortly afterwards, and has been updated to reflect the recent changes." https://www.amazon.co.uk/West-Arabia-Journey-Gary-Heath/dp/0955921961/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=West+of+Arabia+Gary+Heath&qid=1630118639&sr=8-1

"'Travels in Taiwan' is a fantastic book and a must-read for anyone who is either interested in exploring rural Taiwan or wants to learn more about the cultural norms of modern Taiwan aborigines (natives)." Travels in Taiwan 3rd edition has now been listed on Goodreads and linked to the first and second editions for better prominence in searches, and for the reviews including Tenma's from which the above quote is taken. Note: the earlier editions are now out of print. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/56386326-travels-in-taiwan

We are still in the throes of arranging the wider distribution of Travels in Taiwan. Hopefully, it will be available on other platforms next month. Meanwhile, attached is a short video clip of Snow Mountain's East Ridge. It is not well known that Taiwan is a very mountainous island. If you travel extensively here, as I did when collecting material for my book Travels in Taiwan, then it's impossible to avoid those mountains and the Native Taiwanese cultures that still thrive in the valleys thereabouts. The article below that I wrote for Taiwan Today in 2002 remains a useful introduction to hiking on and around said mountains. Travels in Taiwan 3rd edition is currently available on Amazon, and will soon be available on other online platforms https://taiwantoday.tw/news.php?post=36608&unit=29,45

Taiwan is home to more than 200 peaks over 3,000 meters in height, including East Asia's tallest mountain, Yushan. But despite this distinction, very few hikers from overseas make a point of visiting ...

"The cabin turned out to be a grand palace fit for kings [...] It was actually a really beautiful spot, and when the sun came out, the mountains on all sides were clearly visible: wave upon wave of mountains [...] A pair of eagles flew about in the morning sky overhead, making for an unforgettable hour on the grand tour..."
