🌺🌿🌊 “Island Queen” 🌊🌿🌺

I rarely draw people because, frankly, drawing people is not my strength & I’m not very good at it. But I was moved to create a piece that pays honor to all the amazing island queens I have had the honor to know & to the ones I know to this day that I consider family.

I have gained a tremendous amount of cultural knowledge & ancestral wisdom from these queens through their storytelling, oral traditions, chants, & consider a lot of them Kumu (teachers).

My Island Queen is dedicated to them & to all our queens from across the islands, from the Philippines, Polynesia, & all across Pasifika. If you look carefully at her, you’ll find bits & pieces that honors different islander cultures & that come together as one powerful Queen, symbolizing togetherness, beauty, & unity.

I hope she resonates with you & makes you even more proud of your roots.

Tribal Taro - Sacred nourishment & ancestor of the Philippines, Hawai'i, & across the Pacific. 🌱🌊🔥💜

Taro is known in the Philippines as Gabi/Abi/Avi, in Hawai'i as Kalo, in Sāmoa as Talo, & similar names from island to island. It is a tropical plant, from which the root & leaves are commonly used to make food such as Laing in the Philippines, Poi in Hawai'i, Palusami in Sāmoa, Lu Pulu & Lu Sipi in Tonga, Poulet Fafa in Tahiti, & so much more!

It is a very sacred plant, particularly in the Philippines, where legend says that in the pre-colonial times, a great ruler named Rajah Matapang had an only son, Gabino, who was peace loving & did not want to fight. When Rajah Matapang & his army left for an expedition, an enemy tribe attacked their village. Gabino, who stayed behind, fought to protect the women & children, was mortally wounded, & died. When Rajah Matapang returned, he found his son & buried him in his garden. One day he noticed a new species of plant shaped like a shield growing from the grave of Gabino. In his honor, he named the plant Gabi.

In Hawai'i, it is said that the Kalo (Taro) is part of their creation story. The Sky Father Wākea & the keeper of the stars Ho'ohokuikalani (who also happened to be his daughter with Earth Mother Papahānaumoku) had a stillborn child, Hāloanaka. He was buried into the Earth, & from his grave grew the first Kalo plant. Their second son was named Hāloa, & he was nourished by the food produced by Hāloanaka. The Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) are descended from Hāloa, & are thus related to the sacred Kalo plant, from which they gain their sustenance & mana.

This plant unites all of us, from the Philippines, to Hawai'i, Sāmoa, & all islands across the Pacific. My interpretation combines tattoo motifs from all tribes.

The next you consume or see Taro plants, remember that you are consuming sacred energy, & give thanks.

Sacred Healer & Guardian of the Sea 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊

My personal spirit animal & a sacred animal of the sea across many islander cultures, the Manta Ray is known for being a gentle, elegant giant of the ocean.

Known as Hāhālua in Hawai’i, they are revered as an ancient deified ancestor & an ‘aumakua, a personal or family god. In Aotearoa (New Zealand), Māori mythology states that manta rays & some other land & sea creatures are descendants of the supernatural being Punga, the son of Tangaroa, the god of the sea.

May you be harness the energy,
gentleness, protection, & majesty of our sacred Manta Ray. 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊

Protect these souls, & protect the water.

Her piece pays homage to her ancestral roots from Zamboanga/Mindanao & her eventual upbringing on Luzon. It also has patterns that provides her with sacred ancestral protection from negative energy, guidance, & symbols that represent her as a healer, the ability to hold sacred items since she will be a surgical technologist, & symbols that represent structure & stability.

AND she has the Waling-Waling flower on her design, the Queen of Philippine Orchids, that pays homage to her maternal ancestral roots in Mindanao, representing hope, dreams, & high aspirations. This is a piece that will forever remind her of her roots & her journey.

A SNEAK PEEK at my design for an upcoming, special collaboration with a very well known brand! I can’t reveal who they are just yet, but it’s coming up soon! 🔥🔥🔥

This is a piece that is probably one of my deepest & most personal. It pays homage to our ancestors, our sacred space, provides protection & warrior strength, & if you look closely, combines motifs from the Philippines & across multiple Pacific Islands. 🏝🏝🏝

For me, the kauna (deeper meaning) of this piece is the unification of all our islands & the re-connection to our ancestors, in the form of a Makau (Fish Hook), symbolizing protection & our connection to the ocean, along other, more personal meanings. The flowers in the background are Lehua of the ‘Ōhi’a Lehua tree, found on Moku O Keawe / Hawai’i Island / the Big Island of Hawai’i, & whose significance will be explained during release day.
