South America, the fourth-largest continent, has diverse landscapes like the Andes, Amazon, and coastal plains, creating varied climates and biomes.

The Amazon Rainforest is rich in biodiversity with dense vegetation and heavy rainfall. The Andes’ Alpine Tundra has few trees due to high altitude. The Pampas in Argentina and Uruguay are fertile grasslands supporting grazing wildlife. The Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, hosts drought-resistant plants and specialized fauna.

North America can be divided into five physical regions: the mountainous west, the Great Plains (between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River), the Canadian Shield (rocky plateau extending through most of northern and central Canada), the varied eastern region, and the Caribbean. Mexico and Central America’s western coast are connected to the mountainous west, while its lowlands and coastal plains extend into the eastern region.

In those regions various landscapes are shaped including desert, grassland, tundra, and taiga.

Notable desert plant species includes the saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea), Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia), and mesquite.

Taiga has a lot of freshwater ecosystems including rivers, streams, lakes, fens and marshes and forests thrive. Many of the plants, due to the conditions have shallow rot system. The roots work together with mycorrhizal fungi to get the most nutrients they can from the soil.

When it comes to the tundra landscape, it tends to be herbaceous. Herbaceous plants are ones without woody stems. Grasses and mosses are some of the herbaceous plants that grow in the tundra. Examples of tundra plants include reindeer moss, liverworts and lichens.

, designed by , in the university of Manitoba, Canada is a great example of how a small- scale layer of well combined materials and plant species can inspire imagination and generate resilience. The project reveals and brings into focus the processual nature of the landscape and favors a more relaxed and experimental approach to design. The garden is also a landscape laboratory for designers since they can monitor and learn from it.

Tepoztlán Spa, designed by PAAR Taller and honored in the 2024 LILA awards, showcases a remarkable roof garden that harmonizes with the natural landscape. The project's engineering emphasizes sustainability, with the roof garden functioning as both an effective insulator and an organic extension of the environment. The structural design expertly supports the weight of the greenery while maintaining a minimalist, elegant form using locally sourced materials to improve thermal performance. This seamless blend of engineering and landscape architecture reduces the building’s environmental footprint while creating a tranquil, immersive space for visitors.

in is a gentle intervention in a well-established alluvial forest, executed on-site more than 20 years ago. The distinctively formal design language of the 90’s does not seem to obstruct the qualities of the park in any way. Moreover, the park turned out to be visionary and prophetic for its time, as nowadays, there is a widespread tendency to keep more of the untamed natural succession in city centres. The main part of the design is a system of paths that transverse the area or wrap it, as is the case of the circular path that surrounds a grove of poplar trees and orchids. With its strong axes, the park offers spacious vistas, clearings, views of the river Rhone and plenty of soft green tissue to escape the ‘too-muchness’ of urbanity.

Te Auaunga (Oakley Creek) in Auckland, New Zealand, underwent rehabilitation to address pollution, erosion, and loss of native biodiversity. The project included the restoration of natural habitats, removal of invasive species, and improvement of water quality.

Similarly, the River Aire in France was rehabilitated to counteract decades of industrial pollution and urban runoff. Efforts included constructing wetlands, reintroducing native vegetation, and enhancing flood management systems. Rehabilitation was necessary for both projects to restore ecological balance, improve water quality, and increase biodiversity.
In general, rehabilitation of waterways is beneficial for the landscape as it enhances ecosystem services, promotes biodiversity, improves recreational spaces, and mitigates the impacts of climate change by restoring natural

Nature is situated on the Thames Estuary. For 50 years, the site absorbed belched out by . Now the only reminder of its past life is the odd piece of discarded metal. In the mid-1990s there were about 1,500 active sites in the UK. Now there are fewer than 250, largely because taxes were introduced that made sending rubbish to landfill more expensive than incineration.
Now these landfills can not be developed , so it allows nature to reclaim them and for species to come back

At the centre of the project was a sterile site surrounded by three slag heaps, and a mine that was still operating at the time of the call for tenders: 150 hectares of interstices between three mining communities.
There was the novel idea of making water central to the broader picture, with a Parc des Iles (“park of islands”) as one of the driving forces of the overall approach, and with the 150 hectares of slag heaps as the real issue, the real scale of reflection …

The Australian Garden, a large botanical oasis created by TCL with Paul Thompson, spans across 25 hectares at Cranbourne, located on the south-eastern outskirts of Melbourne, Victoria.
This landscaped area, which was once a sand quarry, was meticulously landscaped in two phases, with the first phase being unveiled in 2005 and the next in 2012.
Its primary aim is to highlight distinctive botanical features, enticing visitors to delve deeper into the realm of Australian flora. Central to its design is the depiction of the evolving relationship between Australians and their indigenous flora within the landscape. Water serves as the central link, bridging the natural and human realms within the garden. Emphasizing the ongoing struggle between the preservation of the natural landscape and our innate inclination to shape it, the garden harnesses this tension as a catalyst for artistic exploration, expression, and understanding of the environment and its botanical inhabitants.

In the center of , far from the usual soothing and protected care places, the offers patients an open space that looks more like an artist's studio than a hospital. A big house rocked by the river. Located on the river , the Adamant maintains a privileged relationship with his environment. The exterior access bridges from the pier to the balcony sides combined with the transparency of the rotundas express the hospital's strong openness.Based on a program of creative workshops (pottery, music, drawing, etc.), the establishment wanted to offer a space in which patients wish to stay and return - a necessary condition for their reintegration into the social sphere.

After five years of construction in the the first ’s floating park is built. Designed by Heatherwick, the park features lots of green space for lounging, beautiful landscaped gardens with more than 350 species of flowers, trees and shrubs, and fantastic views of the NYC skyline and Hudson River. According to Heatherwick “the potential pleasure of the project is not to be on a piece of Manhattan.” For him, the park’s success would hinge on the degree to which it created its own atmosphere, removed from its urban surroundings. The lush landscape environment was overseen by the New York–based landscape architect Signe of .
