Through all the highs and lows of European history, through the Thirty Years War, through the Enlightenment, and through all the reigns of the Great Fredericks and Kaiser Wi***es, they kept their faith. See the Winnipeg Free Press posted by Ben Waldman about a bizarre incident in Canadian history, a fundraising campaign via staging a fake-N**i invasion of Winnipeg 80 years ago. Here's a quote from the article:
"the organizing committees ignored reality and lived experience.
They asked what would happen if the N***s arrived, and if their ideology permeated a civilized country such as Canada... They neglected to acknowledge that the ideology, and those most at risk from it, had already been here."
Antisemitism ran rampant in parts of Canada during WWII.
And so today, 'What If' we fail to acknowledge the hidden or open leanings toward bigotry and fascism and what if we ignore the impact of hidden hatred of social/national groups present in our midst, and what if allow our politics to be inspired and manipulated by hypothetical theatrics and our funds channelled to violent purposes, which simply lead to compounding the layers of distrust and resentment toward those we deem different than ourselves?

Wiens, To Antoine, nominated for 2022 Giller Prize. 📚 This book is based on oral accounts of Mennonite refugees who were survivors of Stalinism, N***sm and had to reckon with their past after safely settling in Canada. The narrator is charged with war crimes and begins a journey of remembering his past as a boy, young man, and the various women and men who profoundly shaped his life.
