Issue 25 in our Collated Observations photozine series is nowavailable, and we couldn’t be more delighted with the project featured.

Alice Martin is a London-based professional photographer exploring the emotions and relationships between people and places. Her project, We’re So Lucky To Have This Place, Aren’t We? aims to capture the optimism and warmth Alric Avenue Allotments has provided its community during the pandemic.

“Allotments are often overlooked, hidden in plain sight within the hearts of towns and communities, their presumed sole purpose, growing produce and acting second home to the retired middle-class. In spite of this, Alric Avenue Allotments comprises a tight-knit and diverse community who get far more out of the space than just fresh food. In London, 1 in 5 of the population have no access to a garden, and with the demand for allotments rising over recent years paired with its rapid increase since the start of the pandemic, the average waiting list for a plot now sits between four to five years. Allotments are invaluable with their multitude of benefits, from physical to mental wellbeing, to the sense of togetherness and belonging within their communities.”

Today we launch a campaign on Kickstarter to crowdfund the publication of our latest hardback book, Tube Station Anthology 1900-1933. The project features a contemporary photo series by Ryan Trower documenting the surviving London Underground station buildings from the early twentieth century.

The photos are accompanied by a detailed overview of the different lines and their respective architects by Joshua Abbott (Modernism in Metroland) and is presented as an accompaniment to the 'blue' Tube Station Anthology (1924-1961) book published by ADM earlier this year.

The campaign runs for 30 days from today and features a range of rewards for supporters. Head over to Kickstarter for more information.

Fountain by Jon Pountney

To coincide with the second anniversary of Collated Observations, we're delighted to announce that the latest issue brings you a unique project by the eminent South Wales based artist Jon Pountney.

Many of you will already be familiar with Jon's work, who is known mainly for photography, but also works in a number of mediums, primarily painting. The themes of his work are grounded in ideas of place and community, and exploring why people feel linked or attracted to land or spaces. He loves working within communities to uncover and reinterpret stories, building unique narratives of place.

Fountain - Great Urinals of the Valleys

What started as an exercise in ‘taking the piss’- photographing an outdoor urinal in beautiful evening sun at Quakers Yard in South Wales, soon (in the way that creative projects often do) mutated into a more thoughtful observation of these almost totally overlooked street furniture remnants. Ironically bricked up, and thus removed from its sole purpose of opportunistic relief, it had become little more than a slightly surreal pseudo Art Deco pavement decoration. It (as passers-by double-took at me photographing a bricked up public lav) made me ponder the contemporary problem of public toilet provision and look at the urinal as a greater symbol of something we used to be able to do- provide public lavatories. And then, as I travelled the Valleys of South Wales, I noticed quite how many of these strangely mute and utilitarian objects there are- positioned along the invisible chorographical web of routes known and used by (male) workers heading to and from mines and works and factories at the crack of dawn or dead of night. There used to be a system; there used to be a provision; yes, modern toilets are more expensive with needs for accessibility- but the feeling is that we used to take pride in providing public municipal amenities of all kinds, and that modern life is somehow about how we as a society can’t afford these things anymore. Which is, of course, an ideological decision rather than a financial one.

The Last Day of Our Youth by Paul B Baker.

All profits from this issue are being donated to the Disaster Emergency Committee to help those suffering in Ukraine.

“Shot over the course of one of those unusually warm, lazy, wonderful British summer days, the images in this series depict an afternoon seeping into evening, as a group of 30-something friends on the cusp of middle age forget that they have any other responsibilities outside of drinking, playing football and enjoying that electric thrill of being alive.

Watching, living, photographing, it seemed vital to document the moment. It could so easily be lost. And not just men larking as boys, but that background buzz, the summer we ignore. Things humming in the grasses beyond, creatures swooping to take another smaller life out of the sky, flowers struggling to drink enough from the earth and wring every last drop of light from the glowering sun. Nature going about its vital business.

In my mind it really felt like the last day of our youth. Like a dream of childhood summers, when the warmth lasts into evening and the day seems to go on forever. We have no concerns, no thoughts, except enjoying this moment. But we can only block out the everyday and the inevitable for so long.

For now, let’s forget about tomorrow.”

Happy New Year!

We’re kicking off 2022 with a brand new zine : ‘Revisiting New Brighton’ by Phillip Lake

Taking inspiration from the classic work created in the town by Tom Wood, Martin Parr and Ken Grant, Phillip presents his take on this beautifully faded British seaside resort - slightly noir, even melancholy, but hopefully with warmth and affection.

As a nod of respect to Martin Parr’s seminal book ‘The Last Resort’, first published in 1986, this zine has a limited print run of 86 copies. The first twenty of these are available direct from Phillip with a singed print of the cover image. Visit his feed for more information.

NEW PHOTOBOOK! We’re thrilled to launch pre-sale for a new hardback photobook ‘Krung Thep : A Street Portrait’ by Stewart Weir today!

In 2014 English photographer Stewart Weir spent six weeks wandering the streets of Krung Thep – known more commonly as Bangkok – with his old Rolleiflex camera. In his daily excursions on foot he witnessed a city of great contradiction, where the remains of an ancient merchant hub rubs shoulders with a brash modern metropolis. A place where a traditional way of life is threatened not just by the advance of progress, but by the impending reality of rising sea levels. Using only black and white film, Stewart captured a series of impromptu portraits, beautifully composed candid street scenes, and the general ebb and flow of daily life.

"These images are not an attempt to uncover the cliche dark side of Bangkok or even make a definitive statement about the city. Rather, the photos are nothing more than my daily journey out the front door, putting one foot in front of the other to tread the pavement and gravel side roads. I trusted serendipity and the photo gods to show a glimpse of this sprawling metropolis of concrete and ancient history. "

Stewart's time in the city, which culminated in the documentation of social unrest and violent protests, has been collected together in this new book due for publication through ADM on November 19th.

We’re delighted to launch the latest edition of Collated Observations - Isolated - today, featuring the work of Cardiff-based photographer Beverley Bingham.

The work was created during the varying levels of covid-19 lockdown restrictions. At the time Beverley was living a solitary existence, alone in a flat with completely frosted glass. To generate a purpose to the day, she turned to her camera, making a series that mixes still life, self-portrait and observations taken on daily walks.

“I hadn’t been able to see outside to know what the weather was doing without opening the windows and it was a lonely experience to say the least. Photographing myself at home gave me the opportunity to focus on something different, and in trying to find new and interesting things in my flat it brought some purpose to the very repetitive days. The final selection of images are an attempt to capture the mundanity of the first few months of the year, where most of my days could be summed up in a few words: ‘watered plants, dyed my hair, made a coffee, went for a walk.’”

Isolated is a 40 page perfect bound zine, 210mm square. Hand numbered and limited to 80 copies.

The latest issue of our Collated Observations zine series is out today!

Coming Up For Air by Emyr Payne is a colourful documentation and celebration of the population of the North Welsh Coast. Taken as the country was emerging from lockdown, Emyr visited the towns of Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Pensarn and Llandudno to capture casual street portraits of the characters he encountered.

"As the first Covid-19 pandemic hit the UK in early 2020, our little country rallied together to overcome many tragedies and adversities. The quiet changes this forced upon our lives became just as significant as the bigger ones: using less petrol each week, spending more money on take-out coffee and less on pints of lager, watching more binge-worthy TV box sets, seeing the dogs more than your colleagues and discovering the joys of home-made baking for the very first time. But while the first lock-down became an opportunity for many to explore skills and talents that had lay dormant for years, the coming of the second lock-down felt much more imposing and uncertain.

Coming Up for Air is about the freeing of this obligation, and the feeling we all felt when we could walk the streets again and notice everything around us with fresh eyes. As the restrictions began to ease for a second time in the spring of 2021, I began to walk the streets with my camera again, travelling a few short miles from my home to towns along the North Wales coast, focusing primarily on Rhyl, Colwyn Bay, Pensarn and of course Llandudno. What struck me most was the unique character of these towns and the interesting people who live there, almost always caught between the dream and reality of the British seaside. As I came up for air, so did everybody else, and I tried to capture some of the exuberance and document the colourful characters I met on my outings."

The latest issue of Collated Observations is out today! Cloaked Figures is a fascinating series by Stephen Hyatt-Cross documenting the decaying fishing equipment on the Pakefield shoreline. Taken in a multitude of differing weather conditions, Stephen captures the eerie forms of winches draped in tarpaulin and small upturned vessels, many of which haven’t been used in years.

“These photographs capture the boats and winches at a moment in time, a kind of preservation against further change and decay. The social change associated with the decaying gear though is not obvious in these images. Instead there is an element of the fantastic in the work, something otherworldly, that verges on the surreal, where it’s possible to see the littoral forms in the photographs as substitutes for a human presence. Cloaked figures, heroically facing out to sea, facing up to storms and floods. Small groups huddled together on the ground, forlorn, hooded and trussed. Ghosts. Visitants from the past. Boats, winches, tarpaulins, in a sea change of photographic exploration"

Collated Observations 16 – Portrait of a Market Town by Celia Bartlett is out now and selling fast!

"It is often advised to work with what you know best, and I have certainly come to know Saffron Walden well over the thirty-five years since moving here. Regularly featuring in the Sunday Times Top Ten Towns, with comments such as “Beautiful market town, timeless good looks and debonair charm”, I wanted to capture and share it with the wider world - the people, the place, buildings, history, indeed anything related to this north Essex town.

This project would take the form of a ‘365’ (one post per day shared on social media). However, little did I realise when I started it in January 2020, that I would soon be enforceably confined within the boundary of the town. As lockdown hit, most of the work disappeared from my diary overnight, and the daily posts for this documentary series became my focus. On reflection, this also helped to preserve my sanity through what was to be an unprecedented year.

Saffron Walden has flourished as a market town since the 13th Century, and is therefore graced with many fine period buildings. Whilst these would often be the backdrop to the life I was documenting, it is people who truly bring anywhere to life. Throughout the year, people became familiar with me being around and about, and grew relaxed with the idea of being caught on camera. It has been, and indeed still is an ongoing series which has provided an even greater sense of connection to a place I call home."

Take a walk Down Middlewood Lane with Darren O’Brien in the new issue of Collated Observations, out today.

'Down Middlewood Lane' is a photographic journey exploring the socio-economic impact of Sheffield’s post industrial landscape through the fictional area of Middlewood Lane. The scars of Sheffield’s industrial past not only run through the landscape, but also through the social makeup of the city. Creating a fictional place allows me to explore different areas without isolating any single part."

In 2016 Welsh photographer Matt J. Neale moved to Wuhan, China to experience life in a culture completely different to his home in Newport. Over the next four years he developed a deep passion for street and cityscape photography, especially after dark. Goodnight Wuhan collects together some of Matt’s striking work captured during this period.

“With a population of over 10 million, this is truly a city that never sleeps. A significant shift in atmosphere and mood occurs when darkness begins to drape itself over the skyline. This is partly due to Wuhan being one of China’s ‘three furnace cities’ referring to the especially hot and overbearingly humid summer weather, which drives the majority of socialising and business outside at night, when temperatures are more bearable.

Wuhan’s night was visually alluring, I often found myself walking aimlessly, attracted and distracted by the mind-boggling amount of stuff to look at. From ancient temples to slick, modern high-rises, bankers in suits to humble street food entrepreneurs, Wuhan has it all. “

ADM is thrilled to announce the publication of Grounded by Samantha Brown, today!

How does a pandemic affect a physical place, and our sense of self within it? That's the question that photographer and traveller Samantha Brown pondered on a ten month, socially distanced journey in 2020.

Departing India prior to the grounding of flights in March, Sam documented the eerie calmness of Bristol during the first lockdown, before venturing to Europe via an empty ferry as restrictions eased. Along the way, she encountered an out-of-season, out-of-time atmosphere that haunted every landscape, allowing her to explore themes such as alienation, our perceived sense of 'home' and the isolation of travel. The series concludes as she returns home to Britain just as it exits the EU and enters yet another lockdown.

Grounded is presented as a special boxed book with signed 10x8" print.

The thirteenth volume of our Collated Observations photozine series 'Futures Past and Present' by Alastair Jackson is now out.

Although now based in mainland Scotland, Alastair is originally from the Isle of Skye and has an ongoing interest in documenting its changing landscape, and the ambiguities of life far from the urban south.

His 2019 book The Spirit of the Hebrides - an enveloping black & white series capturing the rugged landscapes and challenging weather of The Hebrides - was Longlisted for The Highland Book Prize, but this latest project showcases a different approach to documenting Skye in the twenty-first century.

"Futures Past & Present is the title of an interview with The Fall, a band I used to listen to when I was growing up on the island. It seemed an apt title for a place where history looms large and the future always carries that weight with it. A place where radical politics have shaped the island more than most people realise. Sometimes those futures leave behind the detritus of the past littered on the landscape. I'm interested in capturing all these aspects of forward change in a beautiful, but often challenging and difficult environment."

The next edition of Collated Observations is out today! Volume eleven features the work of Birmingham based photographer Jay Mason-Burns. An urban wanderer, he captures images that reflect his emotional reaction to what he finds, exploring themes of dereliction, obsolescence and forgetfulness.

Corridors of Uncertainty is a series set in the murky depths of Birmingham’s underpasses and flyovers.

“These places feel disconnected, suspended between shadows and light, like a concrete purgatory. Lack of maintenance has left these spaces problematic, the dangerous and the dissolute now haunt these corridors of uncertainty. But look a little closer, street art fearlessly lights the way whilst skateboarders skim and parkour athletes jump and prance. Humanity can still be found here.”
