And Smith Must Score The FA Cup between 1980-2000.

And Smith Must Score is the podcast that allows three forty something tragic Cup connoisseurs, Stig Ammonds, Michael Channon & Marvyn Dickinson the chance to ponder over what to them was the last period of true Cup fever.

NEW EPISODE ALERT

It’s FA Cup Semi Final weekend and we go back to 1995 with Everton’s Matt Jackson. Jacko put the Toffees 1 up at Elland Rd against a very “Spursy” Spurs and set them on the path to Wembley.

It's got a bit of everything this one: Tales of Stig's drunken past, Marvyn's visit to Portman Road with the Black and White Minstrels and an emotional meltdown that has seen Michael enter anger management therapy.

Contains strong language. Sorry.

FA Cup 2nd Round Preview - THE CHANNON & BALL SHOW

Former Forest Green Rovers (Interim) Manager Jimmy Ball chats with the non league injury prone Michael Channon about his career in football and his hopes for the future as a manager.

Luckily we're talking about Jimmy's career and not Michael's which ended at Buxton in 2000 just by the penalty box at the end at the bottom of the slope (it's mentioned in this episode).

In addition, he (Jimmy) shares his thoughts about the upcoming Round 2 fixtures of the Greatest Cup Competition in the world in company with Ipswich Town's very own Stuart Hayton.

Michael doesn't even know what leagues the teams are in.

Stig & Marv couldn't be contractually arsed this week but 'We Go Again' (Fist Bump Emoji).

Much Love,

Stig, Mick & Marv

*** THE INAUGURAL ASMS VIRTUAL FA CUP MUSEUM ***

We record our FA Cup museum episode this weekend and would like your suggestions!

They can be anything you like; Classic matches, venues, goals or cock-ups.

Alternatively they can be something personal, absurd, funny or just plain daft. It doesn't matter!

Please send them in and we'll run the rule over your suggestions and may even put them in!

Yours,

Stig, Mick & Marv (Curators)

This week’s episode is very special.

Leeds United cult hero Ian Baird talking about the 1987 FA Cup semi final.

It’s so much more than that though. It’s a genuine insight into what being a footballer was like in the 1980s. The decisions made, the mistakes made (Bairdy made one or two), the rougher elements of the game. What a ride he’s had and continues to have. A man who loves the game and whom Leeds fans loved for just being Bairdy.

Not sure how you can lose the Cup and still be magnanimous - 😀👍😀but Reidy did.

He didn't even get a pint of milk. Astonishing dignity.

He talks about it on this week's pod - out on Thursday!

Or Friday, or whenever the day job allows us. 😀👍

This article beautifully sums up the cultural importance of the greatest cup competition in the history of the game. It’s huge.

Thank you Miguel Delaney for writing it.

***THE ASMS FA CUP MUSEUM!***

Hello to all our listeners! (790 and counting)

To celebrate our first ever email suggestion we have pounced on the opportunity to implement it with gusto and fervour.

We need your help and suggestions of what we should put in the FA Cup 'Hall of Fame'.

Who, what and why do you want your exhibit on display?

We've got our own list but we need yours too!

Random thoughts:

The green Wembley goal stanchions.
Tony Gubba on the bus.
Pints of milk.
Losers going up last - Like the losers they are.
Crying on the pitch.
Replays.
No fu***ng fireworks.
No fu***ng music.
Willie Young's sh*****se cynicism.
S**t tracksuits.

We'd love your feedback and will debate the merits of any suggestion in a future episode ahead of announcing the ASMS inaugural exhibits over the summer!

Much love,

Stig, Mick & Marv (and the World of Sport & Grandstand team)
