(Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Capitol Hill, Monrovia-Liberia); Grand Kru County Senator Albert Chie has written the plenary of the Liberian Senate to review
and resubmit constitutional amendments for national
Referendum.
Senator Chie's communication to plenary seeks to address eight proposed amendments ,-including, Article 28 for Dual citizenship, Article 45, for the
reduction of terms of Senators from Nine to seven years
and Representatives from six to five years, Article 47, for the reduction in tenure of the President Pro Tempore and other officers of the Senate from six
to five years, and Article 48, for the reduction in the term of members of the House of Representatives from six to five years, and Article 49, for
election of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and other officers of the House of Representatives from six to five years.
Also, to amend article 50, 83a and 83c - that provides for the election of President from six to five years, change in the date of the general election from second Tuesday of October to second Tuesday in November each
year, as well as, to reduce the time frame for the resolution of complaints emanating from the general elections from thirty days to fifteen days.
Senator Chie noted that on December 8, 2020 said proposed amendments to the
Constitution was submitted for National Referendum but however felt short of the required two-third of the total votes as mandated in Article
91 of the 1986 Constitution and consequently, could not take effect.
The Former President ProTempore prayed that plenary review the proposed
amendments, make
the relevant adjustments,
including reduction and addition, and begin the process, in line with Article 91 of the Constitution towards the National Referendum.
Following his submission, Plenary mandated its committees on Judiciary,
Interal Affairs and Autonomous
