The Animation Workshop - Hosted By Charles Humphreys is back and we’ve got some amazing things lined up for you.

In this session, we’ll be diving into character turnarounds and camera angles in animation, and we’ll be right by your side to show you how to bring these to life as an animator. During the session, we’ll give you some fun and engaging exercises to help you really nail down the skills we’re covering. The Five Minute Film Club:
Theme - Unlikely Love Stories.

The Five-minute film club has gone from strength to strength. With the bar being raised every time this month the theme will be “Unlikely Love Stories.”

The Five rules are:
1. Rule of the month: Unlikely Love Stories.
2. Cannot exceed Five Minute Runtime.
3. Does not have to be made with professional filmmaking equipment. The purpose of this competition is to have fun and encourage collaboration.
4. Must be submitted by midnight on the 17th of July via:
[email protected]
5. The competition is open to anyone, regardless of location.
All entries will be screened at the stockroom cinema on the 18th of July from 6 pm onwards.

Once all films have been screened voting will take place - after which a winner will be announced.

Hollie Bryan is back at The Unit and will be sharing her knowledge of ‘Festivals: where to submit & what to do when you’re selected.’

Hollie’s debut feature as producer, ‘The Ceremony’ was part of the work in progress showcase at BFI London Film Festival ‘23 and is due for release later this year. Before that she was Associate Producer on Ken Loach’s ‘The Old Oak’ with Rebecca O’Brien at Sixteen Films which played in competition at Cannes 2023. Hollie has produced several independent and BFI Network funded shorts which have played at festivals across the world including the recent ‘Predators’ which premiered at BFI London Film Festival and was nominated for a critics circle award this year and ‘Bury the Dogs’ which premiered internationally in competition at Clermont Ferrand. She was producer on multi-award winning short doc ‘Hanging On’, funded by BFI Doc Society which had premieres at Sheffield Doc Fest & Toronto Int. Film Festival in 2021 .

An Evening With: Ben Murrell.

The Unit is very excited to announce we have the brilliant Ben Murrell the Development Co-Ordinator At Duck Soup. Ben is responsible for supporting the company founders, the head of development and the executive producers in their process of developing an outstanding and diverse film and television slate. He worked as a production assistant on DANCE SCHOOL for Duck Soup Films before moving into his role as a development coordinator.   Whilst studying for his degree in Film and Television, Ben participated in the BFI Film Academy, worked on several independently financed short and feature length films and spent time working for the Media Archive for Central England (MACE).

This evening with Ben Murrell at The Unit is going to be your time to gain a unique insight within Bens expertise of the Industry.

Wednesday 15th May 6 PM.

‘Covering Complex Topics Within The Film & Television Industry.’

In alignment with Mental Health Awareness Week which runs from the 13th to the 19th of May 2024. We have this very important event of ‘Covering complex topics within the film and television industry.’ We have two incredible guests for this event the first being.

Bafta-nominated producer Sally Ogden has worked in factual television for the past 15 years specialising in current affairs and sensitive access-based observational documentaries. Including ITV hit series Weight Loss Ward, Bafta-nominated Catching A Killer, The Family Secret, 24 hours in A&E for Channel 4 and BBC 2 Yorkshire Midwives On Call. As well as producing and directing for Panorama, Dispatches, The Tonight programme and The One Show.

She is passionate about making sure that people from all backgrounds are represented well on screen and given opportunities behind the camera. She has been a mental health advocate for the past 20 years.

Secondly, we have ‘Jess Cudlipp - Engagement Producer, Film and TV Charity.’ Jess Cudlipp is one of three Engagement Producers, working as part of the Charity’s Whole Picture Toolkit team, to support production companies in enabling mentally healthy productions. She has twenty-seven years experience of working in broadcast unscripted television production, to Production Executive level, on documentaries, specialist factual, current affairs and high-risk/sensitive content. Jess is also a Mental Health First Aider and a TRiM (Trauma Risk Management) practitioner. Jess will be providing information about the Charity’s support services and showing us some elements of the Whole Picture Toolkit to explain how it works.

Within this event, we will hear from Jess Cudlipp about the Film and TV Charity and we shall also watch Sally Ogden’s ‘Losing My Mind.’ and discuss this film after its screening at The Stockroom Cinema.

Due to a number of requests from Unit members regarding deadline clashes, we have decided to extend the closing date for this months competition to 28 May. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who’s already submitted so far, we cannot wait to screen the films at the end of the month. For anyone else who’s interested in entering, here’s a recap of the rules for this month… ⁣

1. Rule of the Month: films must relate to the works of William Shakespeare. This is completely open to interpretation as we want the competition to be accessible to everyone.⁣

Following on from Thursday’s fantastic funding workshop with Roxy McKenna of , join us on Monday (17 April) for ‘How to Develop Ideas for Broadcasters’ with Aaqil Ahmed.⁣
⁣
Aaqil Ahmed has been a commissioning editor at the BBC and Channel 4, he is a Professor of media, has his own production and training company, and is a non-executive director at a number of organisations including OFCOM. He will be delivering a workshop on how broadcasting and commissioning works across the industry, and the diverse needs of the different channels. Aaqil will be in Keighley and happy to answer any questions on the industry, his career, diversity in television and more importantly your careers and aspirations. ⁣

The session is the second part of three workshops for the Unit delivered by Aaqil's company, Amplify Consulting Ltd, on behalf of the screen industries growth Network (SIGN) and the University of York. ⁣

Aaqil is ultimately looking for up to three businesses who would like to take advantage of this offer of free consultancy. From start up’s to established players, each business will have an audit / set up meeting undertaken by Aaqil and agree and design a bespoke, tailored plan to address agreed prioritised areas of action over the course of the consultancy period (finish by the end of June 2023). ⁣

Aaqil Ahmed is the former Head of Religion and Ethics and commissioning editor at the BBC and Channel 4 and will be consulting through his training and consultancy business, Amplify Consulting Limited. He has thirty years of industry experience as a Producer, Head of Development, Executive producer, Department Head and commissioner with broadcasters big and small in the UK and globally. Aaqil has also been the lead of a number of diversity initiatives from the screen industries to sport and academia and is based in both London and Yorkshire.⁣
