“What’s going to happen to you? All you do is watch TV.” My mother is saying this to a seven-year-old me as I watch the 4:30 Movie on channel 50 for the fifth day in a row in the middle of summer.
“You spend too much time working on the school announcements and not enough time on homework.” My mother is saying this to a 17-year-old me after my best friend and I finish two hours of writing, recording character voices, and mixing in music for a school announcement promoting the Sadie Hawkins dance.
She wasn’t wrong. I was inside on a beautiful day in the former case and my grades did suffer in the latter. But I wasn’t wasting time. The hours in front of the TV and the hours crafting little stories led directly to a 30-year career in storytelling for television.
Six years at The Sports Network showed me the ropes in television production. Ten years at Discovery Channel refined my story telling skills. Things went pretty well. A program I directed and wrote, The S*x Files Season 2 premiere S*x Drive, was the highest rated Canadian program in the channel’s history to that point and fifth highest rated show of any kind. The S*x Files Season 2, which I produced, was the highest rated series on the channel to that point. The television special Live from Mars: Mars Polar Lander, which I produced, was nominated for a Gemini Award. That’s especially gratifying since the Mars Polar Lander crashed. We did four hours of live TV without one new picture from the red planet and were nominated for the highest award in the country. Good times.
