Space is open to us now; and our eagerness to share its meaning is not governed by the efforts of others. We go into space because whatever mankind must undertake, free men must fully share.
the strength of our economy because it is essential to the strength of our nation. And what is true in our case is true in the case of other countries. Their strength in the struggle for freedom depends on the strength of their economic and their social progress.
a contest of will and purpose as well as force and violence-a battle for minds and souls as well as lives and territory.
Experience has taught us that no one nation has the power or the wisdom to solve all the problems of the world.
-that no free people can be kept free without will and energy of their own-and that no two nations or situations are exactly alike.
Large-scale unemployment during a recession is bad enough, but large-scale unemployment during a period of prosperity would be intolerable.
We will deter an enemy from making a nuclear attack only if our retaliatory power is so strong and so invulnerable that he knows he would be destroyed by our response. If we have that strength, civil defense is not needed to deter an attack. If we should ever lack it, civil defense would not be an adequate substitute.

But this deterrent concept assumes rational calculations by rational men. And the history of this planet, and particularly the history of the 20th century, is sufficient to remind us of the possibilities of an irrational attack, a miscalculation, an accidental war, for a war of escalation in which the stakes by each side gradually increase to the point of maximum danger which cannot be either foreseen or deterred. It is on this basis that civil defense can be readily justifiable-as insurance for the civilian population in case of an enemy miscalculation. It is insurance we trust will never be needed-but insurance which we could never forgive ourselves for foregoing in the event of catastrophe.

The dualism of mind and body arose, perhaps, as a clumsy way of describing the power of an intelligent organism to control itself. It seemed reasonable to think of the part controlled as one thing and the part controlling as another. In this way the conscious will was opposed to the involuntary appetites and reason to instinct. In due course we learned to center our identity, our selfhood, in the controlling part—the mind—and increasingly to disown as a mere vehicle the part controlled. It thus escaped our attention that the organism as a whole, largely unconscious, was using consciousness and reason to inform and control itself.
We thought of our conscious intelligence as descending from a higher realm to take possession of a physical vehicle. We therefore failed to see it as an operation of the same formative process as the structure of nerves, muscles, veins, and bones—a structure so subtly ordered (that is, intelligent) that conscious thought is as yet far from being able to describe it.

SOUTH AFRICA NEEDS TO CONFRONT SYSTEMIC RACISM WITHIN SOCIETY.
1. Youth should be exposed to positive constitutional values that promote a South African identity based on unity, freedom and equality.
2. All young people should familiarise themselves with the Constitution and live the values contained in it.
3. Together with the Constitution, young people should live the Bill of Responsibilities, which outlines the responsibilities that come with the rights outlined in the Constitution.
4. The Bill of Responsibilities urges young people to “accept the call to responsibility that comes with the many rights and freedoms that they have been privileged to inherit from the sacrifice and suffering of those who came before”.
5. Student representative councils should push for transformation in schools and institutions of higher learning and ensure that their institutions develop and implement strategies to build a non-racial and inclusive culture, ethos and curriculum.
6. Young people should learn and internalise the preamble to the Constitution, as it embodies what it means to be South African.
7. The proposal of the NDP that the preamble to the Constitution be recited at all school gatherings, followed by the singing of the national anthem should be put forward by young people.
8. The Department of Arts and Culture should continue to make national symbols readily available in schools and institutions of learning.
9. National symbols should also be prominently displayed in government buildings. The private sector should consider displaying the symbols in their receptions areas.
10. Confront discrimination and systemic racism and contribute to nation-building, dialogue and healing racial prejudice, a breakdown in values, inequality of opportunity and massive poverty, as well as competition for scarce resources help to fuel racism and xenophobia.
11. Discrimination on the grounds of sexuality and homophobic violence is also a
major problem.
12. Young people working in the media should lobby for the media to promote the non-racial, non-sexist and democratic values of the Constitution.
