▪️For the first time in over 6 decades, China reported a population decline. According to projections from the World Population Review (WPR), India’s population was 141.7 crore as of the end of 2022. That's a little more than 50 lakh more than the 141.2 crore declared by China on January 17. Thus the news has raised the possibility that India, which was expected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country later this year, has already done so.

▪️The Trump Organisation on Friday received the maximum fine under New York law after it was convicted last month of running a 15-year tax fraud scheme. A New York judge ruled that a pair of the former president's business entities must pay a $1.6 million penalty.

The Trump Organisation said it plans to appeal the ruling, per Reuters.

▪️At the party’s annual caucus meeting on Thursday, Jacinda Ardern formally tendered her resignation. “It’s time,” she said.

The reason she cited was essentially, “I’m leaving…. as I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do the position justice. It’s that simple.”

Her term as prime minister will conclude no later than 7 February.

▪️In the shattered Philadelphia neighborhood, and increasingly drug hot zones around the country, an animal tranquilizer called xylazine — known by street names like “tranq,” “tranq dope” and “zombie drug” — is being used to bulk up fentanyl, making its impact even more devastating.
Xylazine causes wounds that erupt with a scaly dead tissue called eschar; untreated, they can lead to amputation. It induces a blackout stupor for hours, rendering users vulnerable to r**e and robbery.

▪️Microsoft, helmed by CEO Satya Nadella, is planning to invest $10 billion into OpenAI, the startup behind artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chat app ChatGPT founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman. In 2019 Microsoft invested $1 billion in OpenAI .The latest round would value OpenAI at $29 billion, and will allow Microsoft to build new products based on OpenAI technology.
The deal also allegedly stipulates that Microsoft will get 75% of OpenAI’s profits until it recoups its investment. After that threshold, Microsoft would own 49% of OpenAI, other investors would own 49%, and OpenAI’s nonprofit parent would own 2%.

▪️The Bombay High Court has directed Rapido to suspend its bike-taxi service after it was discovered that Rapido didn’t have a license to operate, which basically means that it is operating illegally in the country.
