Twitter has lost almost half of its advertising revenue since it was bought by Elon Musk for $44bn (£33.6bn) last October, its owner has revealed.
He said the company had not seen the increase in sales that had been expected in June, but added that July was a "bit more promising".
Mr Musk sacked about half of Twitter's 7,500 staff when he took over in 2022 in an effort to cut costs.
Rival app Threads now has 150 million users, according to some estimates.
Its in-built connection to Instagram automatically gives the Meta-designed platform access to a potential two billion users.
drop in ad revenue.
In a tweet he said: "Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else."

The jet engines on commercial airplanes can be absolutely huge. Technically known as turbofans, these machines have massive spinning fans in the front that create thrust by sending air out the back.
One specific engine model has a fan that measures about 11 feet across. The engines burn jet fuel, create huge amounts of thrust, and are very loud.
But what if you could point a ray gun at them and shrink them way down, make them electric, and better yet, very quiet? That’s the goal of a company called Whisper Aero, which was founded in 2021. However, their propulsors aren’t intended to power large airliners.
Instead, the company aims to have their innovative electric machines power military drones, perhaps a small nine-passenger jet, or even take on other, non-aerial tasks—like move the air in leaf blowers or HVAC systems.

An evolutionary analysis of behavioural traits across primate species may shed light on the question of whether humans are violent by nature.
The last common ancestor of humans, chimpanzees and bonobos wasn’t especially prone to violence, according to a study attempting to reconstruct the evolution of warlike behaviour among apes.
Hostility between groups of this ancestor may have been tempered by bonds between unrelated females, the study suggests – but researchers warn that its conclusions are highly speculative.
The question of whether violence is integral to human nature has been debated for centuries. Biologists have tried to answer it by looking at chimpanzees.

As Johnson & Johnson awaits a decision on its second attempt to resolve talc lawsuits through a bankruptcy ploy, the company is attempting another legal tactic to free itself from those liabilities—suing doctors who say that its iconic baby powder can cause cancer.
In federal district court in New Jersey, J&J’s talc subsidiary LTL Management has filed two suits against four doctors who authored studies that described a link between J&J’s talc-based products and cancer.
Last week, J&J filed suit against New Hampshire physician Richard Lawrence Kradin and Virginia doctors Theresa Swain Emory and John Coulter Maddox. In a separate suit in May, J&J sued New York physician Jacqueline Miriam Moline.
In the most recent suit, J&J claims that the three doctors cited 75 people with malignant mesothelioma who had been exposed to cancer-causing asbestos only by using Johnson’s Baby Powder or another J&J talc product, Shower to Shower.
But the company says that at least six of the 75 had potentially been exposed to asbestos in other ways. In the May lawsuit, J&J made similar claims against Moline.

A new kind of solar cell has broken a theoretical limit on the efficiency of silicon-based cells, which could enable us to harvest more energy from sunlight.
Almost all commercial solar cells are made from silicon. These can only convert a narrow frequency band of sunlight to electricity.
Light that is too far outside this range either passes straight through or is lost as heat, which gives silicon cells a theoretical efficiency limit of around 29.4 per cent.
Now, two research groups have found ways to pair perovskite with silicon and achieve a higher efficiency.
Perovskite, a titanium and calcium crystal, is well suited to this because it is better at absorbing light closer to the infrared spectrum, but making it efficient has proven difficult.
This is because of wayward electrons that are reabsorbed into the crystal before they can be turned into current.

India would join a group of three other countries that have managed a controlled lunar landing, including the United States, the former Soviet Union and China, if the mission succeeds.
The Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft would also be the first to land at the lunar south pole, an area of special interest for space agencies and private space companies because of the presence of water ice that could support a future space station.
The rocket is set to blast off from India’s main spaceport in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh at 2:35 p.m. (0905 GMT).
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said it had completed a review of the mission readiness ahead of Friday’s scheduled launch.
If everything goes to plan, the Chandrayan-3 launch rocket will blast the spacecraft into an elliptical Earth orbit before it loops toward the moon for a scheduled landing around Aug. 23.

The 969-MW Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project is all set to resume electricity generation by the end of this month, as restoration works in tail race tunnel of the project are nearing completion.
Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) Saturday had a detailed visit of Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project to review in detail the restoration works carried out for strengthening the tail race tunnel and preparedness level relating to resumption of power generation from the project.
The project’s restoration team briefed the chairman that the task of concrete lining in collapsed area of the tail race tunnel has been accomplished.
In addition, rest of the affected portions in 3.5 km-long tunnel have also been strengthened through lattice girder, rock bolting and shotcrete.
Neelum Jhelum is a run-of-the-river Hydropower Project, that started electricity generation in April 2018. Prior to suspension of electricity generation due to collapse of a part of its tail race tunnel last year, the project had provided more than 18 billion units of electricity to the National Grid.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Saturday strongly rebuked Afghanistan for “neglecting its duties as a neighbouring and fraternal country”.
The minister’s statement comes just a day after the armed forces of Pakistan voiced their “serious concerns regarding the safe havens and freedom of movement enjoyed” by the proscribed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) within Afghanistan.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) had issued the statement following Chief of Army Staff Gen Asim Munir’s visit to Quetta Garrison where he was briefed on a recent attack on a military installation in Balochistan’s Zhob Cantt.
A total of nine soldiers were martyred in the attack that took place on Wednesday while security forces killed five terrorists in retaliatory action.

A ‘confidential’ report of the home department has expressed serious concerns over the increase in child abuse crime rate in Punjab, unveiling that the number of boys facing the terrifying ordeal is more than the girls.
The department collected the region-wise data of child abuse in Punjab using the field staff and stated that the Rawalpindi region and Lahore city reported lowest crime against children than other divisions of the province.
As per the report, during first five and a half months of this year, a total of 1,390 incidents of child abuse were reported in Punjab and of them 959 (69pc) victims were boys and 431 (31pc) girls.
The department also furnished recommendations to control the child abuse crime and sent the report to the Lahore capital city police officer (CCPO) and the regional police officers (RPOs) to follow them in letter and spirit.

Fossils of two Triassic reptiles show severed heads and necks with bite marks, highlighting a drawback of the extremely long necks common to many ancient sea creatures.
“We provide the first tangible proof that this body plan was, at least in some animals, a weak spot,” says Eudald Mujal at the Stuttgart State Museum of Natural History in Germany.
Tanystropheus, a genus of reptiles that lived in the Triassic Period, had stiff necks up to 2 metres long that may have allowed them to capture fish and other animals with their crocodile-like heads while keeping their bodies less visible on the sea floor. Mujal and his colleague Stephan Spiekman, also at the Stuttgart museum, used high-resolution photography and 3D modelling to assess the fossils of two species, Tanystropheus hydroides and Tanystropheus longobardicus, on display at the University of Zurich, Switzerland.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said he will quit politics after his coalition government collapsed on Friday in a row over asylum policies.
After nearly 13 years in power, Mr Rutte is one of Europe's longest-serving leaders.
He is now heading a caretaker administration until fresh elections can be held in November.
But he told parliament he would not run for a fifth term in office and would leave politics following the elections.
Dutch MPs will vote later on a no-confidence motion brought by the opposition in a bid to topple him.
The Netherlands has had a coalition government led by Mr Rutte and his conservative VVD party for the past year and a half, but the four parties involved have been split on migration for some time.

Sri Lanka bundled the Netherlands out for 105 to win the final of a World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe by a huge 128 runs on Sunday.
It wasn't too much of a disappointment for the Dutch as both teams had already qualified for this year's 50-over Cricket World Cup in India in October and November by reaching Sunday's final at Harare Sports Club.
Sri Lanka gained the added prestige of winning the tournament after another impressive showing by spin bowler Maheesh Theekshana. He collected 4-31 in 6.3 overs and took the last three wickets to end the Netherlands' hopes.
After being asked to bat first, Sri Lanka made 233 all out in 47.5 overs which was a sub-par total itself, with Sahan Arachchige making an impact with his 57 from 71 balls.

“The chargers for electric buses have arrived and buses will once again operate on the roads of Karachi,” said the Sindh transport minister.
Memon said that the provincial government had been constantly taking steps to modernise public transport facilities in the city. “Another fleet of new buses would reach the city today,” he announced.Memon said that the recently launched PBS app had been working well, enabling the passengers of the Peoples Bus Service to live track the movement of buses.
It is worth mentioning here that the service of electric buses on two routes was stopped almost two months ago after the EV chargers had ‘started malfunctioning’.

European Union (EU) mulling over extending Pakistan’s Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) Plus status.
In a video statement, European Union Ambassador to Pakistan Dr Riina Kionka said that Pakistan will continue enjoying the preference in access to the European markets as no changes have been made in the planned extension of GSP regulation.
She said that the report will be presented in the European parliament and the member states and the EU will keep an eye on the proceeding regarding the GSP plus status.
Dr. Riina Kionka maintained that EU and international experts are keeping an eye on the crackdowns after May 9 and the trials in the military courts and anti-terrorism courts.
Pakistan is a party to International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) which states that every citizen has the right to a fair and public trial. The charter also states that the trial must be held in court which is free and unbiased.

NASA says 98% of astronauts' urine, sweat can be recycled into drinking water. This will help prevent the need for future resupply missions.
The idea of recycling urine to make clean drinking water might make those with even the strongest stomachs a little queasy, but NASA has managed to do just that.
The federal agency announced astronauts aboard the International Space Station have been able to recover 98% of the water that crews take into space with them by recycling everything from urine to sweat.
This also helps ensure each crew member has an average of one gallon of water they need per day to drink, use in food preparation and for hygienic purposes, including brushing teeth.

While traditional electric vehicles are starting to gain considerable market share across the world, other forms of EVs are also becoming more common as companies and researchers look for ways to increase their driving range.
One example are hydrogen fuel cell EVs, which produce electricity internally with hydrogen as the source.
A team of students at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands just made a big leap for the future of hydrogen cars.
They even set a new Guinness World Record in the process. The students drove their Eco-Runner XIII vehicle around Germany's Immendigen track for approximately 1,546 miles—roughly the distance between Boston and Miami—over the course of three days on just one kilogram of hydrogen fuel.

Israel and Saudi Arabia are a long way from a normalization agreement that would involve a defense treaty and a civilian nuclear program from the United States, US President Joe Biden said in a CNN interview.
US officials have been negotiating in a bid to reach an elusive normalization deal between the two countries. "We're a long way from there. We got a lot to talk about," Biden said in an interview with "Fareed Zakaria's GPS."
Biden pointed to Saudi Arabia's decision on the eve of his visit to the kingdom last summer to open its airspace to all air carriers, paving the way for more overflights to and from Israel.
The US president also noted efforts toward a permanent ceasefire in Yemen, a conflict that has killed tens of thousands of people and has widely been seen as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Keep these issues on your mind as AI grows and improves. , where each part works as an independent unit.
But Koerner says it’s even harder, if not currently impossible, in the context of AI.
That’s because it’s not just a matter of hitting “ctrl + F” and deleting every piece of data with someone’s name on it—removing one person’s data would require the costly procedure of retraining the whole model from scratch, she explains.
It’ll be harder and harder to opt out A well-nourished AI system can provide incredible amounts of analysis, including pattern recognition that helps its users understand people’s behavior.
But this is not due only to the tech’s abilities—it’s also because people tend to behave in predictable ways. This particular facet of human nature allows AI systems to work just fine without knowing a lot about you specifically.

The launch of the social media app Threads as a competitor to Twitter is a game-changer.
Meta, which also owns Facebook and Instagram, launched the new platform.
Threads was welcomed almost immediately — especially by hordes of Twitter users that have watched in dismay as their beloved platform crumbles in the hands of Elon Musk.
In less than 24 hours, Threads attracted some 30 million users. And with Meta already having more than two billion Instagram users who can directly link their accounts to it, Threads’ user base will grow fast.
