I received this cute gift from Terri Savelle Foy in the mail (wasn't expecting it!) as a reminder to fight for my dreams. Thank you for the gift ! 🥰 My dreams have been instilled in me since I was child getting to know God, and I know God will see them to completion until the day of Jesus Christ. Phil. 1:6 He is faithful. 🙏🏾🙌🏾

Today's Throwback Thursday takes us back to 2018 when my husband and I got engaged after dating for 10 months. In the video, you'll see a snippet of the proposal, pretty much where he asks the question and ::spoiler alert:: I say yes.😆 I spared you the full 8 minute video. You're welcome. 😅

As I mentioned in my Marriage Monday video earlier this week, my husband and I met at morning prayer. 🙏🏾 Even though in the proposal video my husband says that we met 10 months prior to the proposal, we actually met about 7 months before that. We started dating 10 months prior and starting courting not too long after that. The scripture reference my husband mentioned with the Gideon fleece can be found in Judges 6:36-40. 📖

Anyone wanna share their engagement story? 🙋🏾‍♀️

I've decided to take part in the Instagram Challenge this week, where you post daily using different prompts. Today's prompt is FORWARD. 🛣

Last year around this time I was at a crossroads. I had decided to take some time apart from my husband to reflect on our marriage up to that point and moving forward. We had reached a breaking point and I felt like I had had it and was ready to leave. I met with the senior pastors at my church and decided to take a few months to figure out what I ultimately wanted to do. 🤔

During this break, I stayed with one of my brothers and had a chance to see what life was like without my husband. This break involved a lot of praying, reading, and finding myself again. As I had many conversations with the Holy Spirit and delved into the Word, and started seeing a therapist, I was able to see my situation with fresh eyes and finally make my way back to my husband and our marriage. 💞

One of the recurring intense fellowships we had was surrounding his desire to have children and my wishy washiness about whether or not I felt ready. I came to realization that I would probably never quite feel ready, but as long as I trusted in God and His plan for my life I would be ok. I prayed to Him and said let your will be done. I returned home in November, and by January we found out Hannah was on her way. 🥰

A few people who know me were concerned that I wouldn't be happy about this news, but from the moment I found out about her, I was happy that she was on her way because to me, it was answered prayer. 🙏🏾

Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads? How did you decide to move forward? 🤔

I've decided to take part in the Instagram Challenge this week, where you post daily using different prompts. Today's prompt is ANTICIPATE.

One of my college friends suggested I add this breastfeeding pillow to my registry and proceeded to bless me with it, for which I am extremely grateful. From what I've been hearing it will be beneficial to both me and Hannah, so I'm on board. 💯

As we continue to prepare our place for Hannah's arrival, I find myself anticipating quite a bit about her journey. Can I be honest with you and say that even though I know it may be a while before I hear it, what I most anticipate is hearing Hannah's laugh? 😆 Those who know me know that I love to laugh. I will laugh at the most inappropriate times sometimes, but still I find every opportunity to laugh. I can't wait to share this experience with my daughter and enjoy the sounds of her laughter when the time comes. 🤣

Is there anything you anticipate either in the day to day or as an upcoming special event? 🤔

I've decided to take part in the Instagram Challenge this week, where you post daily using different prompts. Today's prompt is FRESH. 👩🏾‍🦱

I think I've shared a little part of my hair journey with y'all. It took me a while to land on locking my hair, but once I did, I never looked back. 😏 Right before the pandemic began, I amicably parted ways with the loctician who was working on my locs. Over the course of the pandemic, I had started retwisting my own hair and opted not to find a new loctician. Slightly before the end of last year, I kinda fell off of taking care of my hair and that carried me into halfway through this year. I had to remind myself that taking care of my hair was essential, especially as Hannah was coming and I would have different priorities. I set to work finding a new loctician to work on my hair and found one with whom I vibe pretty well. 😏 I've been going there for the past few months and keeping up with hair care. Now my hair is fresh on a regular basis and it's a good way to keep up with something that is important to me, but definitely not something I like to do myself. 🫣🤣

How have you added freshness to your life recently? Maybe you've adopted a new perspective or taken on a new hobby? 🤔

Yesterday, I posted so late that I forgot to post more about this challenge in which I decided to take part this week. I'm not sure how I learned of the Hope Writers group, but I'm gonna say it's somehow connected to my participation in past NaNoWriMo events. I'm subscribed to their mailing list and receive notifications about these writing challenges from time to time. 📝

Admittedly, this past year I've been a little distracted 😆 and haven't been able to post to The Mind of Magda as much as I've wanted to. I've been feeling a pull to post for some time now, so when this challenge came up, I figured it might be a good time to give you all some content and let you know that everything's ok with me. 😅

Each day you receive a different prompt and you can choose to post a photo/video of your choosing and a caption of whichever length you choose that incorporates the prompt. The image above ⬆️ shows what one randomly selected participant will win. I did not personally join the challenge for that purpose, but maybe there might be a few of you out there who may be interested in the prize. You don't have to be a member of Hope Writers to participate. You also don't have to post every day. Simply post the photo/video with a caption and use to be entered into consideration. ✍🏾

Be on the lookout for my post later today as I share about the prompt: FRESH.

Prompts:
9/5 - Regroup
9/6 - Fresh
9/7 - Anticipate
9/8 - Forward
9/9 - Rhythm

Hey friends! It's been a while. 😅 I've decided to take part in the Hope Writers Instagram Challenge this week, where you post daily using different prompts. Today's prompt is REGROUP. 😤

As I enter the final few weeks of the third trimester of my pregnancy, I find myself reflecting a lot on all the events that brought me up to this point. I haven't really shared much of my journey with too many people, but it definitely has been an illuminating, challenging, and introspective experience. 😅

Much like I'm doing in the picture, I've had to adjust to the reality that we're going to soon have a new addition to our household. How can we properly prepare our space to welcome this new blessing? What kind of mother will I be? Who is my daughter and what can I do to help her become the best version of herself? I've come to the conclusion, though, that I can only take it day by day and give myself and those around me a great measure of grace. 🙏🏾

One thing I've had to learn is how to accept help from others. I'm not really good at receiving... I've always been more of a giver. My ever developing relationship with God has allowed me to learn how to receive what He has for me because as He blesses me, I can be a blessing to others. Throughout this experience, I've been blessed to learn what that means in this season of my life. 🥰

What's an experience you've had lately that's challenged you to regroup? 🤔

For today's Focus Friday, I'm just checking in. Have you started filling in your February calendar yet? 🤔

Usually around the last week of the month is where I sit down and fill in most of the next month's commitments. By then, I usually know when my appointments are happening, which workshops I'm attending, who I'm hanging out with, and you already know Date Nights are set in stone until the end of time. 🤣

Even if you never change it again for the rest of the month, though you really should, it helps to have everything laid out in one place where you can take stock of your month at a glance. I tend to update both my paper and Google calendars pretty regularly, so I don't overbook and I don't miss commitments. Last Saturday, I almost missed a commitment because I wrote it on my paper calendar, but forgot to update Google calendar, and that morning I was relying on my Google alerts to remind me. 🤦🏾‍♀️

Let's get more organized this year! 📝 I'm rooting for you! 💃🏾

Today's Throwback Thursday takes us back to 2017 when I got baptized after rededicating my life to God. In the video, you'll see a few photos of me in the baptismal pool and the shot I took in my car afterwards. 😅

My church has this requirement that you have to be baptized before you can start serving in any of the ministries, so I did it at the next opportunity available, which was about a month after I rededicated my life. When I first got saved (back when I was 17), I believe I got baptized a few weeks later because I got saved at a college fellowship event and then I later got baptized at my church. However, in the Bible people usually got baptized right after they got saved. Cf. Acts 2:38-31. 📖

Just to clarify, though, I didn't just get baptized because of my church's requirement. I did it because it is required of believers. Baptism doesn't save you; you are saved the minute you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Baptism symbolizes the next step you take in solidifying your connection with Christ by dying to your old self, and rising to your new self in Christ. It was a joy and honor for me to take part in this sacred rite of passage. 💯

Anyone wanna share their baptism story? 🙋🏾‍♀️

Lately, I've finally decided to catch up on the tv series/movies in the MCU. FYI, MCU stands for Marvel Cinematic Universe. I wanted to highlight a few notable actors/characters whose performances I've definitely enjoyed. 😊😁

3 MCU Actors/Characters to Watch:
1. Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau - WandaVision) - A newcomer to the MCU, Teyonah portrays the adult version of Monica Rambeau, whose character first appeared as a child in the Captain Marvel movie released in 2019, in the Disney+ series WandaVision. You may recognize her from such shows/movies as Mad Men, Empire, Chi-Raq & If Beale Street Could Talk. Her presence commands a room and she always exudes strength and resilience in the roles she takes on. It is no different in this instance as she navigates the complicated nature of her character, Monica, and how she fits into the rich world of the MCU. She is definitely one to watch and I am very excited to see her return for Marvels in 2023.

2. Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson - Falcon/Captain America - Falcon & the Winter Soldier) - I feel like this man needs no introduction as he had a very prolific collection of work before he even entered the MCU as Falcon in the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Anthony Mackie portrays Falcon so well, as the ever accommodating team player always looking to uplift others with no hidden agenda. I didn't know what to expect from Falcon & the Winter Soldier, but it exceeded my expectations. I thought they handled well the nuances of Sam grappling with even the thought of taking up the Captain America mantle knowing the implications of having a black man don the shield.

I'll cover Wunmi Mosaku on my next TV Tuesday post, as I ran out of space in this post. 😁

What's your favorite MCU movie/tv series? 🤔

Today’s is dedicated to Constant Mercies (Main and Overflow) by Phil Thompson. This video is me singing this song while watching service online last week. I love to sing, but I'm not the most technically proficient. I do love God, though, and for him I'd sing all day long.🤩

I went through some stuff last year and there was a crystallizing moment where I heard this song and, even though I already knew this, but wasn't walking fully in it, I knew that God would always have my back. He restored my marriage, opened the door for us to get a second car, and helped us to get back on track regarding so many different things coming down the pike that I totally plan to share. Constant Mercies, especially the Overflow track, became a regular fixture in my car playlist for at least a month. Enjoy! 🎶

Anyone else have a signature song? The one you can't stop replaying? Share below!

For today... another graphic novel! 💓 I’m highlighting the graphic novel Doodleville by Chad Sell. 😁📚

Brief synopsis: Drew is harboring a secret. She created these Doodles when she was younger that come alive and create mischief. The Doodles reside in a place called Doodleville. After too many incidents, Drew is not allowed to bring these Doodles out anymore. However, she brings them out on a class trip to an art museum and as a result of this trip, she's inspired to create a new Doodle named Leviathan or Levi for short. At first, Levi is manageable, but as Levi works through the parameters of his new world, he becomes a force. Soon the rest of the Doodles feel threatened by his presence, and Drew has to call on her young artist friends to get everything back under control. Can they subdue Levi and bring peace back to Doodleville? Read and find out! Highly recommended.😊

What have you read lately? Would you recommend it? 😁

Today's Focus Friday focuses on my next organizational tip: Create a vision board and look at it regularly!

I'm gonna be honest and say that I didn't really start doing vision boards until a couple of years ago. I know that they say your brain thinks in images and not words, but words are my jam. 🤷🏾‍♀️

A few years ago, one of my friends had a vision board party, so I went to see if I could get into it. I didn't finish the board there and ended up actually bringing it with me to another vision board party, where I also didn't finish it. My friends know that I never finish my vision board at the party. 🤣 I almost fear that they woTerri Savelle Foyfuture parties as a result. Sometimes I finish the board later and send a pic, other times I never finish the board. One year, I made multiple digital vision boards, inspired by a post from one of the influencers I follow. I actually found this to be helpful because I was able to put the picture as my phone's home screen wallpaper, so I literally see it everyday.💯

I know I'm always plugging her, but Terri Savelle Foy has some great videos about creating vision boards. So do, Cynthia Henri and QueenBMona. Search for them on YouTube! 📺

Let's get more organized this year! 📝 I'm rooting for you! 💃🏾

Today's Throwback Thursday takes back to 2018 when my husband and I started dating/courting. In the video, he's throwing away a pair of shoes I had worn out because he finally convinced me to buy another pair. 🥿🤣

I'm not a fan of shopping. I avoid it as much as I can, especially clothes shopping. If you were with me daily, you'd see that I recycle my outfits pretty regularly. I'm sure the people I work with have figured out by now that I've developed a pattern for wearing pretty much the same clothes week to week. Don't even get me started on shoe shopping. When Payless used to exist, I would visit it once or twice a year and buy about 3 pairs of shoes and I would wear those shoes down to the nubs. Those who know my husband know that he's always styling and profiling. 😏 I feel bad for him that he married a woman who doesn't put as much care into styling and profiling and does not like clothes/shoe shopping as much as he does. 😆

Anyone with me? Anyone else not a fan of clothes/shoe shopping? 🙋🏾‍♀️

The past few TV seasons have been good to people of color looking to create TV shows for network television. I wanted to highlight a few sitcoms from the current season created and executive produced by black creators. 😊😁

Top 3 New Shows (Sitcom Edition):
1. Grand Crew 👨🏾🍷 (NBC) - Created by Phil Augusta Jackson
A group of black friends navigating their professional & social lives at their favorite wine bar. I love this show because of their emphasis on showing blackness in all it's forms. They show black men that go to therapy and are proud of it, and black men who don't fit the stereotype of "what it means to be black". I also like how they portray black women who are s*x positive, but not fetishized. Starring Echo Kellum, Nicole Byer, along with a cast of amazingly talented actors.

2. Abbott Elementary 🏫👩🏾‍🏫(ABC) - Created by Quinta Brunson (who also stars on the show)
This show is a mockumentary focused on the staff at a public elementary school located in a disadvantaged area always having to scrimp and hustle to provide the best education experience for their students. Starring Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, need I say more? 😏

3. The Wonder Years 👦🏾 (ABC) - Created by Saladin K. Patterson
Revisiting the 1960s from the point of a view of a black middle class family, this show does a great job of showing what it was like to grow up black in the 1960s without focusing too heavily on recurring themes we've already seen in many movies and tv shows: civil rights and racism. They touch on topics like colorism/classism in the black community, father/son bond, puberty and boy/girl relationship shifts, etc. Starring Elisha Williams, Dulé Hill, Saycon Sengbloh, Laura Kariuki, this show is definitely worth a watch.

Anyone agree? Disagree? 🤔

Welcome to the first edition of Mental Health Monday. I decided to add this into the rotation as well because it's also been on my mind to do this since The Mind of Magda started. When I first started The Mind of Magda in 2020, I was still trying to figure out a lot about my mental health. I've learned that just like marriage, my mental health is a journey. Enter, Mental Health Monday. 🧠

My first experience with therapy was in high school when I was sent because of challenges I was having at home. I didn't really know much about it, except what I saw in a couple of movies/tv shows. When I went in, I just unloaded about a bunch of stuff, listened to what the therapist had to say and then I left and never went back. That experience definitely framed the decisions I made about therapy until last year. 💯

I'm still learning a lot about mental health. I can readily admit that I didn't prioritize my mental health the way I should have over the years. I finally hit a breaking point last year that brought me to the decision to finally prioritize my mental health. I hope to continue sharing this journey with you and hear from you as well. Comment below, if you'd like to share any thoughts! 🗣️
