*Now that everyone has forgotten about Australia Day... let’s not forget about Australia Day*

There is a pattern each year as to how we debate the date of Australia Day.

You’ll mostly hear it mentioned in our media a few days leading into the actual day. This will trigger friends to repost articles from various sources on their social media accounts. And then... it’s on for young and old!

Names get thrown around, social media threads get heated and, inevitably, ingrained views become even more ingrained.

Once January 27th rolls around it’s almost as if the issue disappears. We sit idly by waiting for commercial media to dictate the next contentious issue to debate.

You can mostly blame the media in a hyper-capitalist society for this. Commercial media’s business model is to financially benefit from emotional topics. Riling up the public keeps us glued to our screens, which is a key measure when selling advertising space.

Maybe this year we should try and continue the conversation under the radar of our media overlords.

Simple conversation starters like these are worth a try:

1. What do you think about the Australia Day date?

2. Do you know about the date itself and what happened on that day?

3. How do you think Aboriginals might view the date?

The Guardian’s report “The Killing Times” is an important read for anyone looking to broaden their understanding of Australia’s colonial past.

A few quotes referring to the state-sanctioned program to eradicate Aboriginals:

- The colonial journalist and barrister Richard Windeyer called it “the whispering in the bottom of our hearts”.

- The anthropologist William Stanner described a national “cult of forgetfulness”.

- A 1927 royal commission lamented our “conspiracy of silence”.

- We have found that there were at least 270 frontier massacres over 140 years, as part of a state-sanctioned and organised attempt to eradicate Aboriginal people.

Our media landscape has reached a point where the information being presented is having a detrimental effect on the lives of Australians.

The most pressing issue being misreported in most commercial media platforms is man-made climate change.

News Corp outlets are the most culpable.

For instance, their masthead publications placed most of the blame for last year's catastrophic bushfires on arsonists. This was completely unsubstantiated and just one example of News Corp's immoral journalism and irresponsible reporting.

Here is your chance to make a difference.

Public submissions for the Senate inquiry are needed, and are due before this Friday.

Australia needs a royal commission into the Murdoch Media Empire.

The “controversial” image published by the Chinese government is obviously doctored. From the jigsaw pieces to the bodies under the flag... it’s a hyperbolic illustration of Australia’s involvement in the oil-driven, Middle East invasion.

Scott Morrison has used the illustration to puff his chest and “demand” an apology. A tactic, he knows, will have no diplomatic benefit, but will go a long way in whipping up support from the emotional, and now hysterical, LNP base.
