Do you think "ageism" exist?

I posted this on my LinkedIn account and I thought I would share it here, because I felt a need to ask the question and I hope to get some thoughts from you.

Today I participated in a webinar, "Break Through the Age Barrier: Strategies to Counter Ageism and Get Ahead in Your Career" with Helen Sanchez of Tanagui Career Consultants. There was a lot of great information that was shared, but this webinar got me thinking about a few things.

If ten years ago some one told me that I would be faced with ageism I would not have believed it. My thoughts were that as long as I stayed up to date on industry technologies and continued to build my skillset I would always be employable. This year I will turn 58 and I can say without hesitation that I have come face to face with ageism...despite keeping my skills current and learning new skills.

By choice I became a full-time freelancer in 2017, but in the last few years I have wanted to move back into the traditional job role. What I found is that as I "mature" it gets more difficult to find work or new clients in my freelance business. In addition, I have applied for more jobs in the last three years than I have in my entire career.

Here is a thought...do we believe that once a person crosses over 50 that they have no value and are not capable of learning new skills? I am curious as to what the younger generations think of fifty-somethings in regards to career and work. Do they realize that they will one day, in the not to distant future, be the fifty-somethings?

One of the "strategies" that I am suppose to use is "hiding" my age or anything that would "give away" my age. Isn't this deceptive? I am proud of my professional life and my career accomplishments. Contrary to what many may think I am not ready to retire, but am at a point in life where I am looking for my next challenge and to learning new and different skills.

I am curious what are your thoughts on ageism? Does it exist? Do we value the knowledge, skills and wisdom that comes with maturity? How can we create a workforce that is age friendly?

Well, I have done it! I started a blog on Digital Media by Lucy and below is a link to the first of many blog entries.

The DML website has been around since 2016, but hesitated creating a blog because I was unsure what kind of content I would share. I have been working with a lot on women my age to assist them with their online presence and I realized that I get asked similar from people and it occured to me that even though I know the answer I shouldn't assume that others know what I know. So, the beginning of the blog. I love all the techy stuff and learning new things...in fact I tend to dabble in too many things, but one thing that stays consistent is my love for technology and staying ahead of industry changes. For example Chat GPT...we will save that for a future blog entry.

The first blog entry addresses a question I get asked every time I share what I do, "Do I need a website?"

Business card? Business brochure? Promo material?

Created this 4 x 6 card to have a digital business card in my photos to send via text or email to potential clients. I can also have it printed to hand out or post in my local coffee shop or gym. The QR code links to my business website making it easy for people to contact me.

Has it been 1, 3, 5 or more?

Keeping your website “fresh” is important. Whether it is new content, revised home page or complete redesign of your site.

Here are six reasons to keep your site fresh:

1. Visual appeal - just like wardrobe styles change the same is true of the web. You can quickly date a site by just looking at it. Your website is your “storefront” and the first impression that you present, so it is very important to stay relevant and on top of the latest design trends.

2. Security - we often hear about websites getting hacked. To protect your site it is important that your websites software is up-to-date. You must keep your WordPress release current as well as themes and plugins updated. Make sure you are hosting your site (where your website resides) with a reputable company that keeps up with the most recent security updates. If not, consider moving your site and change hosting companies.

3. Content - it is important to fine tune your content such that it is simple, relays your message effectively, incorporates keywords that engage the visitor.

4. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - helps people find your site and the “rules” are always changing...you may have heard it called “algorithms”. Each time it changes your website can be affected. So, to keep your site relevant and showing up in searches this is an opportunity to update the “code” associated with SEO.

5. Usability - websites were once visited most often via desk or laptop, but now the majority of visitors are using their mobile devices. Is your website mobile friendly? If not, this is your MAIN reason to have your site redesigned.

6. Load time - have you ever clicked a link and it took to long to view the site? Despite great design, good content and ease of use, if your site loads slowly your visitor will leave. Take time to optimize image sizes, check the efficiency of page load (referred to as caching) and update hosting if outdated.

I am Lucy the creator and developer behind Digital Media by Lucy. I am excited to begin this next chapter of my “digital” life as I prepare to take my skills public with a website dedicated to web design and development, branding, education and all things web related.

A little about me....I am 50 something mom of three grown adults. I live on a small island on the coast of South Carolina where I enjoy yoga, cycling, tennis, and any activities that involve water. I’ve been in the IT industry for over thirty (not a typo) years including ten years of web related experience. I fell in love with WordPress in 2010 while working at a family owned marketing agency. In 2015 I ventured into design, which has fueled my love for building websites and has been the perfect addition to my skill set. Basically, I have been freelancing and building websites for entrepreneurs, small businesses and in collaboration with other agencies for the last six years.

So, why am I just now going “public”?

Well, earlier this year I stepped away from freelance and got a “traditional” nine to five job. How did that work out? Not so good! It didn’t take long for me to realize the traditional work model was not for me and that I needed to create the work life that fit my dreams and goals.
I really don’t like to call this work because I actually love design and the process of taking my designs and giving them life on the web.

My specialty is designing and building sites utilizing WordPress, a CMS(Content Management System) that is open source(free to everyone and supported by a HUGE community of designers and developers). In addition, I enjoy creating branding that not only inspires but supports the message and personality of my client.
