Whitewashing is apparent right from the start of Crazy Rich Asian’s film production. Its director, Jon M. Chu, is well aware that they used an Asian cast to tell a story of prestige and privilege that fits the mold of Hollywood.

When Indiewire asked Jon M. Chu about the idea of his film, he said that he wanted to prove that “Hollywood movies could have starred Asians with just as much style, just as much pizzazz.”

But honestly speaking, aside from the result being detached from the actual struggles of Asian people, it seemed to convey a bias or leaning on what kind of Asians are acceptable in a white society; a “right kind of Asians.”

Baby Driver is a 2017 action film by Edgar Wright, an English director whose internationally renowned for the freshness of his movies, especially in the aspect of film editing.

Edgar Wright brought a catalog of action-filled comedies to the film industry. This man also made the classic zombie-comedy film Shaun of The Dead in 2004 and whimsically adapted the comic series Scott Pilgrim VS. The World in 2010… and Baby Driver, of course, was one of his absolute banger of a film.
It may be his best yet.

The latest remake and film adaptation of Mortal Kombat, released in 2021, is downright disappointing and disrespectful for gamers and film enthusiasts!

Mortal Kombat, yes without any subtitles, was the directorial debut of Simon McQuoid. It is available for streaming on HBO Max, and it spans a total of a hundred and ten minutes that you might want to take back after watching, wishing you’ve played the actual Mortal Kombat instead.

What Makes A Zombie Film Korean Style" One country continually proves that their cultural products are marketable to the international masses without undergoing adaptation. That country, my friends, is South Korea. From KPop to the Korean BBQ Places, to the endless catalog of KDramas available on Netflix and other streaming services, South Korea has been prosperous in showing its cultural capacity to the world. And one particular film has made noise internationally as it endowed the hearts of the masses in both ways of drama and horror. This is the 2016 zombie film directed by Sang-ho Yeon, Train to Busan.

The box-office success of Train to Busan is quite simple to understand, for it has all the essential ingredients for a film to be enjoyed by the whole family. To put it simply, Train to Busan is a Film about…

Let us call our tonight’s guest! Thailand’s Natrenapa Chan-gam, Natre for short!

Sadako: So, Natre, in “Shutter,” you have successfully disturbed Tun, a photographer, and his girlfriend, Jane, by haunting the photographs they have taken.

Natre: Yes, Sadako, you can frame it that way.

Sadako: What is your motivation, then?

Natre: Well, if you have watched the movie, you would know that I once loved Tun, yet we kept it a secret. Until one day...

Natre (cont’d): I was out of the picture.

It’s funny when you think of a paradise when hearing the name “City of God,” when in fact, the City of God is one big cemetery.

From ashes, we come back to ashes.
Some believe that death is one long, eternal sleep. In sleep comes dreams. So maybe, just maybe, we can think of death as an endless dream.
Talks to the grave:

This kid, you, kid, dream on.

Talks to the audiences:
This kid had the biggest dream of all. His vision was to rule the City of God. Now, he can't dictate anymore. There is nothing to be ruled anymore.

There's one big problem with this kid's dream. He dreamed of living in a nightmare.

Ah… Earth, our planet—except if you’re an alien, of course—has been revolving for around 4.54 billion years. We, humans, although we have advanced so much, still have too much to explore. It’s just that civilization almost trapped us into the comfort of our homes. We forget the vastness of the planet, that we’re surrounded by uncharted territories.

Because from the heart of the uninhabited wilderness...
And under the bottomless ocean...
AN EPIC BATTLE AWAITS.

RINGU (1998) Review" Good day, my name is Sadako, and today, I will show you the right way to make a modern urban legend by infiltrating people’s modern technology.

Ringu is the first cinematic masterpiece where I appeared in, released in cinemas in the year 1998, directed by Nakada Hideo. By its release, TV and landline telephones started to infiltrate common households of middle-class families. This was the latest, most accessible gadget everyone has at the time.

SO IT HAS TO BE HAUNTED.

The Ring revolves around a cursed videotape that, when watched, triggers a phone call declaring your inevitable death one week from now.

Spiderman’s good ol’ Uncle Ben left us with a famous and timeless quote:

With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.

And this has been the usual plot of countless superhero movies that have been produced today.
Superhero movies are often concerned with how the hero or heroine would balance themselves between saving the world and keeping up with their personal responsibilities. After all, inside their latex or metal suit lies another human being like the rest of us.

Didn’t you just wish that you could forget a specific person and go on without them? Won’t you buy the chance to just wake up one day without any hurtful trace of that one person?

The film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind might want to make you reconsider taking that chance. Initially released in 2004, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a… Sci-fi film?.
Hmmm, maybe
A romantic comedy film?

Kind of
A suspense film?

You could look at it that way.

You could not exactly point out the genre of the film, nonetheless, it has re-emerged and garnered acclaim from audiences and critics in the past few years. However, early reviews of the film deemed it to be confusing and uninspired.

Films today tend to be complicated in both their visual and literary aspects. There are films that intend to puzzle the viewer’s minds from start to finish, then pull off an unexpected twist that is set to blow our minds.

Other recent films try to be provocative as much as possible in order to expose the injustices deeply scattered within our society and inspire rage towards the culprits of such injustices.

Today we’re going to talk about Casablanca, a 1942 romantic drama film that surpassed the endurance of time… and it's one major key to its success: good ol’ excellent writing.

What absurdly comedic timing it is that at the start of a new decade, amidst a global pandemic, a film titled "I'm Thinking of Ending Things" was released.

I'm Thinking of Ending Things is the third full-length directorial feature of Charlie Kaufman, a screenwriter, and director who's known for his unorthodox and non-commercial style of filmmaking.

Though branded as "non-commercial," lucky for Kaufman who usually struggles financially in producing his films, I'm Thinking of Ending Things was produced by the streaming giant Netflix.

Under Netflix's catalog, I'm Thinking of Ending Things is under the genre of horror/thriller, yet the common audiences did not approve the film to belong to the genre. Why is that?

Go grab a bowl of your favorite chips as we'll discuss your favorite flick here in Flick and Chips!

The opening shots of George Clooney’s 2020 Sci-Fi film, The Midnight Sky reminded me of a silly internet trend that emerged at the beginning of this worldwide pandemic: a bleak observatory in the Arctic, a vacant meeting room, and a deserted pantry.

The trend I am talking about is Liminal Spaces.

Alcott’s coming of age novel—that comprises two volumes, the first published in 1868 and the second in 1869, a novel that follows the story of four sisters from a poor family in Concord, Massachusetts—was appropriately and honestly adapted by Gerwig, not only for the screen but also for the modern times.

The Guardian has described it as one of the freshest literary adaptations when it was released in 2019 and it is mainly because of Gerwig’s cinematic mastery that brought a 19th Century Family to come to life be experienced by audiences in a way that they’re not just looking at a specific period of time, but traveling from one time to another, and realizing that the past and present doesn’t make much of a difference at all.

Today we're gonna talk about how Little Women is still relevant three centuries after it was published and how its latest adaptation emphasized its importance.

Nowadays, the usual marketing ploy to sell your romance film is to explicitly announce at the beginning that “in case you haven’t guessed, this isn’t a love story.” Many films that use this “non-love story” hook turns out to be, in the end, a love story. However, Alice Wu’s 2020 film, The Half of It, seems to be an exception.

We would like to believe that love is only a subtopic that the film tackles, even though several quotations about love are featured throughout the film to signal the beginning and end of an act.
