Pictured here are fewer than a dozen older cinder cones from the northern tip of the Pleistocene-Holocene Pinacate volcanic field that straddles the US-Mexico frontier. Most of the 300 cinder cones and maars of the Pinacate field reside in Mexico, as do all of the Holocene-age vents. Note that the lava flows and vent areas are deeply infiltrated by sands, derived in part from the Gran Diserto sand sea, 15 miles to the west.
