TW: ABA, infantilization, ableism

Hello again, everyone. Neurodiversity News was on a long hiatus because of life circumstances, but we are now back with a new piece based on my observations working in group homes for autistic teenagers with higher support needs. It will be released monthly in volumes. Although I do not agree with the methods used here, I worked the job (often against the behaviorist rules imposed upon the place) in order to help vulnerable autistic people so they would have someone in their corner to not feel alone.

For three years, I worked as a direct support professional, or DSP, for autistic teenagers with higher support needs in group homes. They were sent there for violent offenses committed in the communit

Neurodiversity News has come out with a new video, after a long hiatus and needing to gather spoons because of life events. This is an ode to high-support needs autistic people who are nonspeaking and/or have intellectual disabilities, explaining why their voices must be included in the movement and be treated with respect by society at large.

Neurodiversity News is back with another interview! This week, we’ve interviewed Jen Schonger, who is the program manager for the NJ Autism Center of Excellence. She is also a great ally to the autistic community and a mother to an autistic daughter. Schonger puts in great work to keep families up to date on ethical treatment of autistic people, as well as how society can treat us better.

Our founder, Sebastian, has done a collaboration video with a fellow YouTuber discussing the similarities between channels like Fathering Autism, the BHARE Foundation, and Autism Speaks and how they negatively view and treat autistic people. This is a no-holds-barred take on the subject, as both YouTubers seek to from oppression and exploitation.

CW: ableism, exploitation, violence

There’s a way to portray high-support needs autistic people ethically. Getting support for them can be crucial, but showing them in their most vulnerable moments is one of the worst ways to do that. Unfortunately, the National Council on Severe Autism did just that, releasing a video alongside other organizations like the Autism Science Foundation. In this blog post, we talk about why showing autistic people being put on display during personal moments is exploitative and robs them of dignity and privacy. Would you agree?

Since the JRC has been a newsworthy topic lately, I figured showing a video I’ve done on ABA (which also covers JRC at 9:40) would be educational for those that have the spoons for it. A lot of research went into it. It also has a part 2.

On April 30, Mark Rober and Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting a fundraising event called “Color the Spectrum,” which will benefit the organization NEXT for AUTISM. For those who don’t know, the co-founder of NEXT, Harry Slatkin, publicly stated he wished his autistic son, David, would drown. Not only that, but NEXT helps fund charter schools that use ABA against children. Lastly, NEXT helped create the Center for Autism and the Developing Brain, which lists in their mission statement that they aim to “prevent” autism spectrum disorders (they have since deleted that portion, but screenshots have been taken before the deletion). A-list celebrities like Jack Black, John Oliver, Chris Rock, and Mr. Beast are attached to the project. This event needs to be stopped, and the celebrities attending the event need to be informed on NEXT and their past. They ultimately seek a world without high-support needs autistic people like David. But all autistic people deserve to exist, even those who need more daily help than others or who are nonverbal. A world without them would be a sad world indeed.

In honor of Autism Acceptance Month, with today being Autism Awareness Day, I wanted to bring awareness to the real elephant in the room, that is Autism Speaks.

I made this video to expose how corrupt they truly are, with one of the co-founders outright saying that autism “has to be stopped.” You can’t get as ableist as that. Quite often, videos about them tend to talk about their dark past, but I also touch on how they are in the present day. Spoilers: they’re no better now than they were back then.

From spouses of executives cursing at people who oppose them to propaganda of forced compliance, Autism Speaks is a monster that needs to be stopped, not autistic people themselves. Would you agree?

Why are functioning labels bad? And what does masking have to do with it?

Focusing on those they label as “high functioning” and the devastating impact that has to autistics that is most likely partly to do with the high su***de rate amongst autistic people!

Functioning labels are used to describe Autistic peoples ability to function. Autism is a spectrum a BIG continuous spectrum, functioning labels are too black and white in my opinion and that’s a HUGE issue in the autistic community because it can leave a lot of autistic people without support or with very little support.
Masking/ camouflaging isn’t taken into account either, Masking or camouflaging is where autistic people learn certain behaviours and social cues and mask (hide) others in order to appear more neurotypical (non-autistic). But this comes at a cost more often than not... for example autistic burnout. Also when we mask we can come across like we are managing and “functioning higher” than we truly are behind the scenes. For example... I got a job working in a bakery in my town and it was pretty busy, I was having to communicate with a lot of people there as well as perform loads of other tasks quite quickly as we always had a lot of queues.
I got this job because everyone around me believed I was more capable than I actually was because of a whole life I spent masking to appear more “normal” and I hid my struggles mostly... I also felt pressured to get a job and it was something that you do when you become an adult... so I got this job.
But what I didn’t expect was the impact it was going to have on me and the autistic burnout it was going to cause either.
I had to mask so much when working and communicating with people I found it extremely difficult, it was emotional and mentally draining, I just felt awkward and I was scared. It was more like I was TERRIFIED. I was terrified of going to work! I would constantly be pressured by the senior staff and managers to go quicker and speak up and do multiple tasks at once.
I lost count how many times I was sent to dishwasher duty because I wasn’t coping on the shop floor serving people. I had multiple breakdowns and crying because of customers using a horrible tone of voice or being aggressive. I was crying and pleading every day with my mum to not make me go to work and call in sick for me... I was honestly terrified to the core. Working meant masking more and it lead to me becoming so emotionally and mentally drained... it triggered Anorexia, depressive disorder, it lead to self harming... and also multiple su***de attempts... it lead to me having a lot of psychiatric hospital admissions and being detained under many different Sections.
I was not coping... I was doing more than I was capable of. It wasn’t a case of I didn’t want to work or I was being lazy... because I REALLY did want to work and be like everyone else my age who had jobs. I wanted MORE THAN ANYTHING to be able to function like a neurotypical person.
Long term masking and no support often can lead to mental illnesses and suicidal thoughts or su***de.

Masking and the use of functioning labels has a part to play with the high su***de rate amongst Autistic people, but also with the amount of us that have or are more likely to develop mental illnesses and struggles... such as Self-Harm, Depression, Anxiety Disorders, Eating Disorders and OCD etc.
When people think of “high functioning”... people think of someone who is intelligent, more capable, can live a “normal life”, doesn’t need support etc.
But what people don’t see or realise is what we mask and what extent we mask to... some of us have loads of different difficulties in many different areas such as sensory (i.e touch, smell, sound, taste and sight), communication, personal care, easily influenced/ taken advantage of, understanding bills/ money, time management, routine/structure, sleep, mental health/ illnesses, physical health, reading, confidence, memory and general daily life... and sooooo many other things.

ALL AUTISTIC PEOPLE NEED SOME LEVEL OF SUPPORT... don’t just assume because of functioning labels or masking/camouflaging that we don’t need support.
Having support in place that we can access and use will have a huge benefit to many Autistic people. And most likely reduce the su***de rate amongst us and the development of mental illnesses and the severity.

When we campaign and speak out... WE ARE NOT forgetting those who require “high support” or those with learning disabilities, but majority of autistic people with learning disabilities get access to support services and there’s more services out there for them... where as if you are seen as “high functioning” people think we don’t need support and we can manage... when it’s not true, there’s not a lot of access to services for support for us. So we have every right to speak out about this major issue with functioning labels and the harm it causes.

Where I live... if you are Autistic without a learning disability then there are NO SUPPORT services for you. The learning disability services here have autism specialists who are support workers, psychiatrists, doctors, therapists, Occupational Therapists etc.... but no... if you aren’t seen as “low functioning” or have a learning disability you get NOTHING.... no access to specialists or any support. We are left to struggle on our own. The mental health services here have no autism specialists and have even told me in the past they are not equipped to support me with it.

The only reason I get 23 hours of support a week now is because my mental health deteriorated to the point I was detained in a psychiatric hospital under a Section 3 of the Mental Health Act for quite awhile and the support I need is covered under Section 117 After Care. So the support I get is paid for.
I wouldn’t have any support if I wasn’t put on a section 3...
So rather than providing support I needed to help me live a stable okay manageable life...... they wait until you ALMOST DIE and become EXTREMELY mentally unwell.... then you can get the support.
IT SHOULDN’T BE THIS WAY, ALL AUTISTIC PEOPLE DESERVE ACCESS TO SUPPORT!

Is a disability justice issue? ACLU says yes. So do we. Conservatorship is another form of “nothing about us without us.” It denies a neurodivergent person all decision making civil liberties, a total denial of personhood.
We don’t know Britney’s diagnosis, but we do know in order to be granted conservatorship by a judge, the person from whom all rights are being taken has to be disabled.

Britney is one is one of us, and we stand with her in solidarity.

from denial of personhood and civil liberties.

“The ACLU has a long history of advocating for the rights of people with disabilities to live independent, self-directed lives as active members of their communities. Our concerns about conservatorship and guardianship are part of that commitment: ensuring that people with disabilities retain their civil rights and liberties and a belief that disabled people are protected through the exercise — rather than the removal — of these rights.
This issue is getting attention right now because of Britney Spears’ fame. But she is only one of untold thousands nationwide under or at risk of guardianship or conservatorship. The ACLU has advocated for expanding supported decision-making, an alternative to conservatorship or guardianship where people with disabilities can choose trusted support people to help them direct their lives, without court intervention or loss of civil rights.”

It’s safe to say that the idea of murdering a child or loved one is a universally evil act. However, when it’s a disabled person who is murdered, the media tends to center the murderer as justified in their actions. They’ll use excuses like the victim being “difficult to care for” or calling the murderer “a devoted and loving mother.” In response, the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) and partner organizations hold a Disability Day of Mourning Vigil annually to mourn disabled individuals who were murdered by their caregivers. This year’s vigil was held on March 1. An event like this should not have to exist, but because of our ableist society, it unfortunately does.
