Known the world over as Marcus Visionary for his storied career within Jungle/Drum & Bass, Marcus Sills also has a long history of exploring and releasing genre bending experiments at other tempos under a variety of under the radar aliases. His productions at 140 bpm, referred to by many as “Sub Soca”, has seen two albums worth of material released under his own name as well as under the Carib artist banner. Marcus adopted the Carib name and concept from the title of his original 2010 album exploring the 140-bpm tempo and the then emerging Dubstep sound. Originally released on Liondub International, the landmark project was an experimental interpretation of the prominent Dubstep movement of that time, referenced though Marcus's diverse musical and cultural heritage. Utilising elements from House, Dub, Reggae, Techno, Broken Beats, Kuduro, African and UK Funky, the album achieved widespread critical and commercial success and inspired many to look at the 140-bpm template with a wider view.
Feeling a creative need to compile some of his choice works from this period as well as release several previously unheard and unavailable dubplates that he had stashed away, Marcus decided to put together a Mixtape highlighting this chapter of his discography. Clocking in at 40 tracks and 120 minutes long, the mix captures a variety of flavours of his signature Sub Soca sound versioned with exclusive Grime accapellas over top as well as some never before aired dubs from his extensive vault. The mix serves to bookend this body of work and signals a renewed focus on creating more material that embodies the no rules ethos of this portion of his artistic footprint.
