We answered this while placing a parameter on this hypothetical scenario.

- You don't have unlimited money
- You can't use this money to invest, just your needs and wants
- You can't "save" your money

-----

Matic na yung necessities like food, hygiene, accommodation, clothing, and healthcare. Pero if it’s just the luxury, will probably buy machines for machine shop and satisfy my curiosity and cravings on tinkering and building random things, also books for other things that I’m curious about. With this, I can do the scientists and inventor stuffs that I always dream of and build things for society while I enjoy myself.

–A

-----

I think I'm gonna lose my mind if I don't do any work.

According to Blaise Pascal, given enough time to think, humans will eventually contemplate their own insignificance which eventually leads to misery. Or as he puts it in his Pensees "I have discovered that all unhappiness of men arises from one single fact: that they cannot stay quietly in their own chamber. I have found that there is one very real reason, namely, the natural poverty of our feeble and mortal condition so miserable that nothing can comfort us when we think of it closely."

Fortunately humans are easily distracted. One can easily keep these thoughts at bay given enough distractions. They may not be enough to make you happy, but they will at least make you functional. Though eventually, when these distractions can no longer sustain you, Pascal suggests that the only recourse is to turn to Go (he's an uber religious dude). While many find comfort in that, it isn't an option for some of us.

Going back to the question, I will try my best to find diversions. Read a book. Write my own book. Devour seinen manga. Pick up a new talent. Maybe even try to learn the violin. Start the business we've been meaning to start now that we have a safety net if ever we fail. Finally travel to the places my SO and I have dreamed of going. Do intimate stuff. Do more intimate stuff. Do everything just to not be alone with my own thoughts and contemplate insignificance.

Read Pascal's Pensees 169 to distract yourself: https://tayiabr.wordpress.com/2016/11/01/pensees-169-blaise-pascal/

I'll probably travel the world. Stay in one place for a month or two, truly discovering what that town has to offer. I'll talk to locals, maybe even learn their language along the way. I'll drink and eat with the locals, learn their experiences through stories and alcohol. I'll probably document the journey too in multiple ways. Vlog, book, etc.

Since this money can't be used for other people, I'll probably think of a way to raise awareness to issues I encounter along the way, or raise funds for the people that I'd meet. I'm talkative, I think inevitably I'll generate certain level of influence and following, considering that I don't need to satisfy brands or companies for revenue.

I imagined I'll learn a lot of things along the way, even become good at some of them. I'll probably learn pottery, weaving, surfing, lots of stuff.

I'll certainly try to taste all kinds of food and alcohol around the world.

Depending on who you are and what you aspire to be, being perceived as a mediocre is like a blessing. I think greatness is subjective, you can be an above average person or even someone great in the eyes of someone who admires you. It is better to focus on your personal goals than focusing on the image or feeling of being a mediocre. Having a mastery of few skills will make you feel better, in a way that you know you have something to offer on the table.

–A

Being mediocre, for me, defeats the purpose of existence of one's life. What kind of life do you need to have in order to live and die as an average? It doesn't really take much to escape mediocrity. You don't need to be talented nor rich.

But here's the thing, you need to decouple your views of mediocrity on factors that many people (especially on social media) are considering. Baka kase you're just thinking of yourself as a mediocre employee, a mediocre earner, a mediocre whatever social media says you should focus.

You can be mediocre on those matters and be excellent on others, and it doesn't make you less of a person. Be an excellent dad, be a son that any parent will be so proud of, be a top-notch partner. Be an excellent person, the world needs more of those than some sh*tstain on Facebook Reels talking about how education is useless because they got lucky on one idea.

Not everyone needs to be "The" businessman, not everyone needs to be "The freelancer". Just be "The" son that your mom proudly talks about in every dinner table. Be the "Dad" that every son/daughter will wish to have in their life. Be that partner that brings peace in this already chaotic world. And I assure you, if Jesus is real, he'd love your existence more than anyone who flexes sh*t on Facebook that you compare yourself to.

We're all trying to be extraordinary, but let's be extraordinary on things that matters for those who loves us, not for facebook, not for instagram.

False dichotomy. Di naman mutually exclusive ang dalawa.

You can have a diploma while also having diskarte. You can also have no diploma and also no diskarte. One can argue getting a diploma is a diskarte itself. Both are necessary to be successful. But most importantly, you also need to be lucky.

–R

Let's replace Diploma with conventional education. College degree, master's, vocational, online course whatever. Those things, plus diskarte shouldn't be a black and white choice. As –R already said, they SHOULD be together.

Manny Pacquiao? One in a billion talent ang dala non, magtigil kayo.

18/11/2023

I think cultural appropriation is a bit irrelevant in the Philippines because of our social dynamics as opposed to western countries. Obviously, with pinoy-baiting being a thing, we love it when our culture is shared.

In the west, there can be a bit of friction between cultures and ethnicities resulting in some getting marginalized. It's understandable that some of these people tends to be protective of certain aspects of their culture. Cultural elements that are copied by a dominant culture from a minority culture without the original context—especially with the express disapproval of the originating culture—is a big no, especially if the appropriating culture profits from it.

–R

While cultural appropriation is a valid topic on some occasion, I think for the most part, it's just total bu****it. Alright sure, if someone's using your cultural stuff for a gag, or to belittle you, go ahead. Pero for the most part na nakita ko, they literally just want to gatekeep parts of their culture, OR worst, culture of others. They want to be offended in behalf of others who don't even get offended.

There are ways in which cultural appropriation is valid ,but for the most part of woke agenda, they're just trying to be offended for the sake of being offended.

Use your unfulfilling but stable job to make a safety net so that you can start over again for something that you really wanna do. However, this option is for privileged.

–A

Choose the one with more money. Seriously. As long as it is not a toxic workplace.

–R

There's a middle ground in all of this. You can stay in your unfulfilling job, and take a fulfilling side gig or sideline. Then once you've saved enough and created enough rapport on this fulfilling side gig, you can switch to that seamlessly without any risk to your well-being, or your family's well-being. But yeah, by default, choose the one with more money, as it'll give you more freedom in the long run.

18/11/2023

It’s not a badge of honor, and I think it should be part of the minimum requirement on any relationship. One of the reasons why someone might not be consistent is because they are pretending and get tired at some point, it then shows you who they really are. Of course, there could be other reasons. If you have to pretend in order to get into or maintain a relationship then those relationship is doomed to crumble because they haven’t known the real you in the first place. Also, if what you do for someone is genuine, expectations of reciprocations wouldn’t even cross your mind unless there’s a deal.

–A

Consistency is a commodity that even some committed people cannot afford. I think it's wrong to bring consistency that much on a table without reciprocation. A bit of consistency here and there, but if there's no reciprocation, it's time to call it even and continue with life. Reserve that consistency for someone who will also be consistent towards you. You'll need lots of it for the right person.

–R

We're not there yet, we're still far from it. The most advanced A.I. right now can still be manipulated via prompt hacking. These A.I.'s are still blind, they can just create a rough estimation from the millions of information fed to them, there's still no hint that they have the capacity to formulate new concepts of their own.

We are still very far from it. But if some idiots decided to put GPT on a missile, then that might actually happen. Would be hilarious if the world ends because of a grandma prompt.

I don't think it's an issue but you do have the responsibility of setting a standard if you are the more experienced person relationship-wise.

–R

While some people romanticize the idea of being the "first", I see it the other way around. NBSB and NGSB are people with zero experience, s*xually and emotionally. You're essentially going into a relationship with someone who have no idea what it means to be a partner. I mean it could work for some, but there's a lot to learn in the process.

–R

It’s a cycle so it keeps on happening over and over, with a cycle of 11 years if I remember it right. I doubt that whoever is in charged haven’t placed any sort of protection to the most important aspect of communication and data. Even if worst things happened, then we don’t have any choice but to live in the dark without internet. I still have my books and math/engineering skills with me so I think I still have something to offer for a work if we’ll be living on the dark for a prolonged period.

There's no inherent meaning. It's up to us to find one or create one ourselves

–R

I think we don’t have any inherent purpose, we humans have a natural tendency to seek pattern in order to make sense of everything around us and I think this question is an example of it. However I think it is necessary for us to have a direction in life, so the question is valid. To answer it, we make our own purpose, we can choose what to do with our lives and this freedom allows us to give our own meaning or to establish our own purpose.

–A

You're not born for some sacred duty, you weren't meant for anything, you're not here for something greater. You were born to die by default. But that's also the beauty of it, you're born with a blank slate. You can be anything you want to be. You're free to pursue what you feel like doing.

I'm all for it. And to be honest, that's how I want to meet my end. I don't want to get into a situation wherein I'm just a shell of my former self. Barely remembering my name, or my loved ones. Could barely talk, could barely form a sentence, could barely move.

If I ever reach that age wherein I'm starting to become a burden to everyone (and probably once my partner has left this world too). Then I'd love to meet my end in this way. Throw one last party, drink my last beer with friends (or whoever is still left in this world), play my last FPS match, eat my last steak, laugh for one last time. Then leave the world.

Not drowning in my own drool, not with my head open in the asphalt along EDSA, not with an open wound as I lay dead in some random alley because someone decided to rob an old man.

A dignified end.

Well, you should discuss it with your partner first. But with your parents? That depends on the mistake. If it's something you could forego, then don't. Don't give other people a bullet that they can use against your partner.

But if it's a problem wherein you're on the verge of ending the relationship, or it's a problem where it totally changes the situation between you and your partner, then by all means, get an outside perspective to get a better view of the situation.

Ghosting, by default is disrespectful for me. It's usually done by people to avoid being accountable on their decision. It's selfish most of the time.

However, I understand why some resort to it. Some people are really bad at accepting rejection, and will often resort to begging, manipulation, guilt-tripping, and in some case, even violence. For those scenario, ghosting sounds like a decent solution.

No pressure. You're still young enough to afford to fail. What you do after you fail is what matters. Make the same mistakes or adjust?

–R

okay lang magfail sa 20s. Get up, dust yourself, try again. charge to experience. What you do after failing matters more.

–F

During 20’s actually maganda magkaron ng trial and error sa maraming aspect ng life, malaking factor ang luck siyempre on whether maaga mo makuha ang tamang timpla. Besides may mga late bloomer na matanda na talaga nung naging successful, aside from the result you also have to check the effort.

–A

If you fail and you've learned something, then that's good. Pero kung patuloy kang nagfafail on the same thing. That's just plain stupidity. Take it from someone who've failed in a lot of things. Failing ain't bad. Kumbaga sa trading, all those failures are just paper failures, magiging realized loss lang 'yan once you give up in life. 15/11/2023

Not a programmer but since I'm basically the reason why IV is an atheist, I can say masyadong maraming lenses to view morality to answer in a quick NGL question. But put simply, morality is an abstract collection of norms and traditions held by a group of people that aims to make said group survive/succeed.

–R

Neither an atheist nor a programmer (but a frustrated programmer). I think morality is relative to time and place. What’s good and bad depends on the culture. Genocide is perceived to be bad as a default but imagine if demons, like the bad creatures described by most religions, suddenly appear and live among us you’ll most likely want to annihilate them all. You’re now a genocidal maniac.

–A

I believe morality is just our futile attempt to rationalize and describe our emotion in its entirety. Morality is very subjective, and often can be debated one way or the other. It just boils down on how you were raised, how you feel about certain things (which is affected by your environment and experiences). I mean even with your fully defined morality, we're still subjected to bias and hypocrisy. Personally I don't really think I have a very solid "morality", I've always told my friends, I can be a hypocrite whenever I see fit. It's just all about what I want to do.

You have to set a criteria, also quantity/quality depends on the context. Body count of 3 for example, if s*x then not much, if its kill count then it’s more than enough for a trip to prison. Is your crush out of your league? Pareho kayong tambay oks lang, successful na tao siya tapos walang direction buhay mo, then it’s too much.

–A

There's no such thing as too much. We only have one chance at life, go big on your dreams. Be delusional if you want, just manage your expectation. You dream big, then prepare for that huge chance that you'll fail.

I take back what I said, Jollibee's price is too much

Of course dying without doing the things you love.

Loving the things you hate, or used to hate of course (since you already love it), is beautiful. It means you have grown, you have changed, you have overcome hate.

I used to hate writing, or language for that matter. Even a year after I've became part of Trivia Mania around 11 years ago, I still don't know the difference between there, their, and they're. I used to think, why the f*ck should I learn this sh*t if I'm going to be a programmer anyway?

A quote from Dead Poet's Society goes like this, "language was invented for one reason, boys - to woo women - and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do."

Aside from Taj Mahal, and other grand gesture, language is one of the best way to preserve emotion, to preserve love long after our demise, and with that reason, I've learned to love language.

On the other hand, dying without doing the things you love defeats the very purpose of life. I believe we only exists to find something we truly love, and dedicate our life into that. To push ourselves beyond our limit for that thing we love, that, for me is life itself.

–IV

There was an existing study that attempted to answer happiness but ends up having a different yet related findings. When someone does anything, as in anything, if the skills matches the difficulty of the task there’s a tendency for this person to become so overly absorbed that the sense of time and self disappear during the activity. The researcher, Mihaly, called it as a flow state. In short, it is very possible to feel contented doing the things you hate, and you might end up loving it unconsciously because of the satisfaction that it gives. I wouldn’t call it a painful experience.

Recent information suggests na isa sa nahihirapan ang mga companies right now ay sa pagreretain ng employees. As an employee too, it's quite a no-brainer. For most of us, there's barely any incentive to stay. Salary movement is so slow if you remain even if you're a top performer sometimes. And the best way to get a salary bump is by getting an offer from another company. Which is usually 50% to 100% more. Of course there's some special situation where you'd have the perfect to wait out an opportunity inside the company, but for most of us, job hopping really is the way.

Then we have these tone-deaf management that pushes the idea that pizza parties and "team building" is what's lacking of why they can't retain their employees. I mean, you have sh*t salary raise, you have a terrible working condition, you perpetuate a culture of shaming people for taking vacation leaves, tapos papasayawin mo pa sa Christmas Party.

I've been in numerous companies, and nakakita na rin ako ng mga companies na mapunta sa s**t situation due to key people deciding to leave almost at the same time. And this is specially true sa I.T., pag may umalis na isa at narinig ng iba na maganda ang offer doon (which typically means same stack ng current mo), madali nalang sa kanila ang sumabay sa pag-alis.

Don't get me started with WFH. It benefits both the employees and the employer. As an employer, you have the opportunity to expand your talent search. Hindi ka nalang limited sa mga taong willing magrelocate near Makati o Ortigas, you can literally hire people from Batanes to Mindanao. You also don't need to rent larger offices. And yet some of them are so eager to implement an RTO. I receive messages from headhunters almost everyday, and I just reject anything that says office-based or hybrid.

Employers need to understand na they're not just competing with companies in BGC, Ortigas, or Makati today. Most of the positions you are desperately trying to fill up also has lots of opportunities to work remotely abroad. Better salaries, better management, better hours, better benefits, and WFH pa. So anong laban mo?

So a white guy posted something about how he despise the idea of people using coffee shops as their offices and some s**t.

My group of caffeine-gulping people love to meet at Starbucks, or any cafe for that matter, but it's usually Starbucks as it is everywhere. Needless to say, I've experienced both being in the "tanginang yan walang maupuan" side and the one who stays for hours in the coffee shop.

First thing that I can see here is that there's just a lack of available spaces to be used as alternative for studying and working. If you're someone who can work from anywhere, and you just happen to need a place to work for 3 hours or so, you don't really have much choice. There are co-working spaces, but the most accessible ones are the coffee shops. Same for the students, we don't really have good access to public libraries. I mean I'd rather work in a quiet environment if I have the convenient option to do so, rather than go to Starbucks and hear the infidelity story of the group of Titas on the other table.

Second, Starbucks ain't solving this "problem" probably because they don't see it as a problem. The people staying inside signals a strong business and a good place to go to. The people posting that they're in Starbucks creates free advertisement for the company. And if you happen to go a Starbucks with the intention of sitting down, and you come there and find out it's all filled with remote workers, you'd probably still grab a coffee while ranting about them, right? So Starbucks doesn't really lose any business in that process.

A statement from Starbucks Philippine's President Noey Lopez in 2022 even said that they are striving to become the "third place" that people wanted to be, just after home and workplace. Coz let's face it, although Starbucks coffee isn't that good, and while it may be filled with people on Zoom calls, majority of us will still go to a Starbucks on an instinct. Whether it's to grab a quick caffeine fix, or as a meeting point with friends.

Coz you can demand all you want and waive your "but I am a customer" flag, the same thing goes for the people with laptops, both of you are paying customers. I mean what are you going to do? Go to "But first, coffee" and drink their s**t-tier coffee?

Lots of you are asking sh*t like this, how to be you po, paano maging katulad mo or whatever. Whether that's sarcastic or serious, I don't think that's something to aim. I don't really consider myself to be something so great compared to my peers, ako lang ang pinaka-maingay HAHAHAHAHA.

But a bit of introspection, what makes IV "The Fourth". I think it's the huge contradiction, or hypocrisy within myself, however you want to see it.

You see, I have huge ego, I'm a f*cking narcissist, and I'm not even hiding that fact. Yet I am easily humbled by people I accept to be better than me in that aspect. It's like with the amount of ego I have, it took a complete 180 and used the desire to be better than everyone else to better myself.

I always had the capacity to accept where I am lacking, and take knowledge from those who have more in that area. I'm not afraid to say "damn bro I'm wrong", then proceed to take whatever they know on the subject and next time I won't be wrong.

I still remember how me and –R became friends. He wiped the floor with my stupid-ass argument in a public group of GNC (Guagua National Colleges) students. So instead of taking it too personal, I just went like "this guy hella smart, a'ryt you my n*gga now". Then I invited him to our little page (Trivia Mania) and the rest is history.

You don't really need to be hella smart to be awesome (like me), just keep an open mind and focus on improving yourself, even if it means accepting you're wrong sometimes.

Sumunod siguro yung entrepreneurial and business skills.

Kailangan kong magsurvive. Desperation brings out the survival skills.

Anong skills ang sana ay natutunan niyo o nais niyong matutunan in the coming days?

So you mean gagamitin mo yung pangalan mo para manghikayat ng mga tao para maglabas ng milyones, pero pag pumalya yung "investment" eh biglang biktima ka rin? Walang accountability ganon ba yon?

Ahh sabagay, DDS ka nga pala.
