Days 38 & 39
One aspect of this self-love experiment is for me to figure out how I will express love and care for myself going forward. Others might think I’ve already been doing this, but some of the seemingly self-care directed actions I take are driven by the innate feeling I’m not good enough. What looks like a healthy diet, might be driven by my desire to weigh less . What looks like a passion for fitness may be driven by the same. And on and on.

I’m not saying I don’t have other, more positive, motivations for what I do - I have many. But the drive to correct what I perceive as imperfections is ever present and overshadows the good if I fail to see the “results” I want.

Recently I took time to pursue what I believe are expressions of self-love for the right reasons. I met with a vegan dietician to learn how to better set myself up for success (my past attempts have failed). Veganism is important to me firstly for the animals, but also for my health. Previously, not know how to eat a healthy vegan diet would lead to weight gain so I would throw out my values to loose a few pounds.

I also took a bday hike with friends. In past years I would do a long bike ride - 100 miles for my 50th. Although I thoroughly enjoyed this, letting go of my identity as an endurance athlete and instead focusing on just moving my body is both challenging and necessary. The guilt I felt for not “working out” - as if hiking 8 miles isn’t a workout - was replaced by the joy of seeing butterflies among the redwoods. 🧘🏽‍♀️🙏🏽✨

Lately I’ve been focused on feeling the earth beneath me - when I practice yoga, sit in meditation, walk my dogs, ride my bike. Enjoying the solid feeling of the ground, and knowing I can tap into that solid, stillness whenever I want to.

I am not an untethered being, floating aimlessly through space and time, with no purpose. I am part of this world; I have roots which grow ever deeper as I nourish them with love, community, and gratitude for all that is. 🧘🏽‍♀️🙏🏽✨

Days 8 & 9: The thought popped into my head yesterday that one way I can honor myself is by being intentional about bringing beauty into my life. I’m not talking about cosmetic products or consuming material goods, necessarily. But rather doing small things like hanging some of the artwork I have stacked up in a corner, or making a healthy, beautiful meal and enjoying it without distraction.

I’ve noticed I tend to procrastinate on these little tasks because a. I’m too busy, b. I would rather be working out, and c. when I explore this just a little deeper, I can see I don’t feel worthy of a beautiful home, a beautiful life.

Intellectually I know I’m just as worthy as the next person, although that understanding has yet to travel from my head to my heart. But, getting out on my paddle board this morning and enjoying the sun, water and wildlife (mostly birds and jellyfish) helped me get just a little closer to truly loving myself.
