First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has defended the salary of the man brought in to turn around Ferguson Shipyard in Port Glasgow, after it was nationalised despite a four-year delay to its ferry project.

Tim Hair was appointed turnaround director in 2019 and had been paid £2 million by the time he left earlier this year.

In FMQs on Thursday, the First Minster told MSPs that the ‘buck stops with me’ regarding the contract that led to two delayed and over budget ferries being built.

Audit Scotland (an independent body ensuring public money is spent effectively) said the order was given to the Ferguson shipyard against the advice of a key agency and without the normal financial safeguards in place.

The First Minister announced the delay in scraping the legal responsibility around wearing face masks due to a sharp rise in COVID cases.

20/02/2022

On the 14th February, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the special powers and measures given by the Emergencies Act – for the first time in the country’s history. This decision was taken, according to the PM, “to supplement provincial and territorial capacity to address the blockades and occupations”. The blockades have stemmed from protests about mandatory vaccinations and restrictions.

However, some of the measures have been labelled by many as an exaggerated response that oversteps basic freedoms. Organisations such as the Canadian Civil Liberties Association said that the government had not met the threshold, warning that emergency legislation such as the Emergencies Act “should not be normalized”.

A survey of 2,000 adults created by Savanta Com Res for BBC Scotland showed general support for the move to “speed up and simplify” the legal process of gender recognition. The poll showed that 57% were in favour and 20% opposed.

Within weeks, the Scottish Government is expected to bring in new legislation to make these changes to the legal gender recognition process under the 2004 Gender Recognition Act.

Russian authorities shut down the Moscow offices of German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) on the 4th February, two days after German regulators banned Russian news channel RT from operating in Germany.

The Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, announced that Scotland will receive £290 million to ease the burden of the 54% rise in energy costs.

The sharp percentage increase will mean millions of households will pay an extra £639 a year.

The additional money is from the result of Barnett consequentials from a council tax cut announced by Rishi Sunak in England.

It will be on top of a £200 reduction on energy bills for customers in England, Scotland and Wales in October.

Hungary will hold a parliamentary election on the 3rd April this year, where most of the parliamentary opposition has united under one coalition to overthrow Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Fidesz-KDNP government.

Hungary has become one of the most notorious European nations under Orban, responsible for actively worsening the migrant crisis of the mid-2010s, siding with rogue states and showing an open opposition to democratic institutions and making an informal ally of Poland and specifically their governing P*S party.

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has had to defend his position during a debate in the House of Commons, following a statement he made regarding the publishing of Sue Gray’s report.

The long-anticipated report, which was 12 pages in total, was published on the government’s website earlier today. The report was published as an “update”, as the Metropolitan police stopped the publication of the full findings, given that they will be carrying out their own investigations. Sue Gray’s report summarised that the “gatherings” that took place in government were “difficult to justify”. The report also criticised the level of alcohol consumption in government buildings and the use of the Number 10 garden for social gatherings.

Russia has faced backlash and warnings from military heavyweights in Europe after its eight yearlong annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine accelerated after 100,000 Russian troops were deployed to its border. Despite President Vladimir Putin’s persistent denial of a possible invasion, US President Joe Biden stated that the United States would not hesitate to impose personal sanctions upon Putin himself, as well as placing considerable economic sanctions upon the Russian economy.

Not even one week ago, the famous Serbian tennis player and current world number 1, Novak Djokovic, made headlines after his arrival in Melbourne to play in the Australian Open, starting on the 17th of this month. 2022 has started with what may remind many of the unrest in summer 2020. Two years ago, if someone had said that Russia could soon invade Ukraine, no one would have believed it. However, what may have seemed to be almost a conspiracy theory, today it has become a real threat. Putin has sent over 115,000 troops and wide range tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles near Ukraine’s border. One of the latest reactions to this situation has been the G7 summit in Liverpool publicly condemning the “Russian military build-up near Ukraine” and they have warned Russia of “massive consequences” if it invades Ukraine.

Unfortunately, the new Nationality and Borders Bill is reality, and has now passed a third reading in the House of Commons with a majority of 67, and it will have a devastating impact on the lives of immigrants and asylum seekers. The Nationality and Borders Bill passed through the House of Commons this week after attracting some amount of controversy over the implications of what it could mean for the lives of immigrants and asylum seekers in the future.

MPs have given the controversial bill a third reading and it passed to the House of Lords with a majority of 67.

The Bill, which seeks to heavily curb English Channel crossings and change how asylum claims are processed, only received nine minutes of debate on Wednesday.

An official statement has been released by the Metropolitan Police stating they will not investigate any possible breaches of Covid-19 restrictions by senior members of the government at an alleged Christmas party last year.

The allegations of a party amid a lockdown, surfaced after a video was published and shared by ITV News yesterday. The clip showed the former spokesperson for the Prime Minister, Allegra Stratton ‘joking’ about how wine and cheese was served and there was no social distancing in place.
