The One Show - Retail Crime - BBC
A short clip of last nights, The One Show by the BBC featuring myself and family run business retail owner, Benedict Selvaratnam who has been experiencing more than 10 shoplifting incidents every day.
The filming took place last week in Croydon, London where we were interviewed by One Show reporter/ journalist, Matt Allwright who highlighted the rise in retail crime across England and Wales.
I visited the store to offer expert advice on improving security measures. My findings exposed significant vulnerabilities in the store’s defences, which Benedict has since acted upon to better safeguard his business.
The episode drew on recent figures from the Office for National Statistics, which revealed that theft from retail outlets has reached a 20-year high, rising by 30% in the year ending March 2024. The British Retail Consortium estimates that retail theft is now costing the industry a staggering £1.8 billion annually....

Just in case you missed it!
A BBC Leicester Radio interview this morning with myself and radio presenter Ady Dayman talking about the Governments plans to release some prisoners early to help free up spaces in the prison system.
Is it worth sending an offender to prison for a few weeks with no rehabilitation courses, housing and focused support to suit the offenders needs in the community?
We also talked about rehabilitation and the lack of rehabilitation in the community and prisons especially for, "low level less serious offenders", also highlighting the fact that drugs and alcohol and mental health play a major role in offending behaviour and the sad fact that rehabilitation only works if offenders want to receive the help to change whilst some offenders play the system to obtain early release on parole then once free go back to their old ways.
I managed to mention the successful amazing work Stuart Toogood and his team have been doing with West Midlands Police helping offenders rehabilitate and support offenders back into the community so they get the best chance possible to lead law abiding fulfilling lives.
In my opinion tackling the wider issues of class A drug supply and demand is a key priority to reducing many of the social issues and crime we are facing in our communities today.

Terminal Fraud!
A clip featuring myself and Catch a Thief UK from Channel 5's new documentary series, Shoplifters Caught Red Handed.
This clip highlights an attempted retail payment terminal fraud in one of my members stores located in Birmingham.
Two male suspects entered the store asking for baby wipes whilst the other male attempted to manipulate the payment terminal in order to use a stolen bank card to pay for alcohol. The male who was asking for baby wipes was doing his best to cause the shop assistant to be distracted.
The situation got a bit tense at times as the shopkeeper in this instance was aware of their distraction scam and managed to refuse them service and even given them a refund which the suspects requested.
Quite often when this type of scam is taking place and the shopkeeper becomes aware and refuses the goods, the bad customer will then ask to be refunded. Many shopkeepers have fallen victim to this and given the refund, the suspect will change the original stolen card that they used to a different card that isn't stolen to obtain the refund. Retailers can lose their money twice with this scam.
You can see these suspects in full via the Catch a Thief UK website.
My advice to retailers regarding this scam is to contact your terminal provider to have the signature request function turned off. Also If a customer asks for a refund don't give them one and ask them to contact their bank.
