Terminal Fraud!
A clip featuring myself and Catch a Thief UK from Channel 5's new documentary series, Shoplifters Caught Red Handed.
This clip highlights an attempted retail payment terminal fraud in one of my members stores located in Birmingham.
Two male suspects entered the store asking for baby wipes whilst the other male attempted to manipulate the payment terminal in order to use a stolen bank card to pay for alcohol. The male who was asking for baby wipes was doing his best to cause the shop assistant to be distracted.
The situation got a bit tense at times as the shopkeeper in this instance was aware of their distraction scam and managed to refuse them service and even given them a refund which the suspects requested.
Quite often when this type of scam is taking place and the shopkeeper becomes aware and refuses the goods, the bad customer will then ask to be refunded. Many shopkeepers have fallen victim to this and given the refund, the suspect will change the original stolen card that they used to a different card that isn't stolen to obtain the refund. Retailers can lose their money twice with this scam.
You can see these suspects in full via the Catch a Thief UK website.
My advice to retailers regarding this scam is to contact your terminal provider to have the signature request function turned off. Also If a customer asks for a refund don't give them one and ask them to contact their bank.

Just in case you missed it! An ITV national evening news story from last week from their Shops And Robbers series that's highlighting the sharp rise in violence, abuse and theft that retailers are facing up and down the country.
Changing public perception regarding retail crime is a key component in reducing, violence and theft in our retail outlets.
Many people still believe that retail crime is a victimless crime, when in fact this is not the case.
Retailers who face huge losses have to close their stores, many of which are independently owned or are running their businesses under a popular franchise. Retailers will very rarely claim their losses back from their insurers as this puts their premiums through the roof, they often claim their losses by inflating the prices of the goods we buy which in turn can drive customers away and they eventually have to close their doors which causes job losses and leaves big holes in our communities...

A video clip from the Professional Security Officer conference at The Security Event, NEC Birmingham last week.
Myself and Ruth Ripley were speakers at the conference which was hosted and organised by security expert Philip Ingram MBE.
There was lots to learn, see and do!
The event and conference was a great success, lots to learn with many experts and new security technologies, methods, training and smart apps that have been designed to help keep individuals and businesses safe from threats of terrorism, violence, abuse, anti-social-behaviour and theft.
We talked about some of the work and new technologies Catch a Thief have been using to detect and deter crime in retail outlets.
We also talked about some of the challenges businesses are facing tackling crime, keeping their customers and staff safe also, highlighting the new technologies available and the importance of staying one step ahead of criminals who will exploit easy pickings and weaknesses in a businesses security. Training was an important topic with the proposed introduction and roll out of Martyn's Law and how it will help shape the way we implement and look at security, keeping the public, individuals and business safe from the rising threats we are facing.
Here are some great apps that were talked about at the conference that can help with personal safety and security:

I appeared on the BBC Midlands news on 17 April 2023.
The BBC report highlights the rise in shoplifting and anti-social-behaviour in retail outlets across the west Midlands.
After talking with a pharmacy owner in Alum Rock, Birmingham it was clear that the cost of living crisis, drug addiction and mental health are common contributing factors in the rise in crimes against retailers in the west Midlands.
I am pleased to say that I will be attending The Security Event next week at the NEC in Birmingham sitting as a panelist collaborating with like minded experts on how to effectively approach and tackle the rise in retail crime using new technologies, methods and solutions whilst also recognising and providing the necessary guidance, help and support to offenders who are experiencing financial and other hardships due to the cost of living crisis
