An article in The Times featuring myself and the work I have been doing helping retailers deter and detect crime in their stores.

The article also focused on what led me to turn my life around and create an online crime prevention platform to help retailers and communities deter and detect crime in their stores and communities.

It has been a very interesting journey over the last ten years and exciting seeing myself grow with knowledge and confidence. The journey so far hasn't always been easy with many obstacles that I have had to overcome along the way.

I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds and I would like to say thank you to everyone who over the years saw the potential in me and the important work I have been doing

I recently filmed on-site with Ben Kutz and his television production team for the German documentary series Galileo. The programme explored my transformative journey that led me to establish Catch a Thief UK, an online crime prevention platform dedicated to supporting retailers.

Galileo also highlighted our valuable partnership with Veesion and their cutting-edge artificial intelligence theft detection technology. This innovative solution has proven to be an essential tool, assisting our retail members in identifying suspected theft in real time.

Despite having to deal with the news and raw emotions regarding the tragic passing of my older brother, Damian who died by drowning one week ago today 😭💔, I managed to pull myself together and continue yesterday with a previously booked filming session. I will explain more about the sad loss of my brother at a later date, despite everything he was still proud of me for my work.

On a more positive note, keeping myself focused, it was good to meet and work with, Ben Kutz and his production team from, Bulgarian television production company, Enrico Palazzo for Galileo Productions.

The documentary will be aired between the end of June or beginning of August.

The interview was focused around my work, the rise in violence, abuse and theft in UK retail outlets. We also discussed and demonstrated the methods and technologies, Catch a Thief have been using in our retail members stores, such as, Public Appeals, Audio Warning Announcements, Artificial Intelligence theft detection technology and Body Worn Video Cameras. We filmed on location in Western Downs, Stafford and Alum Rock, Birmingham.

It was a long day but I am glad I attended to get a little normality back

It has been a great experience today home schooling my beautiful 11 year old niece Ellie-Mai about the affects of retail crime. We also performed some role plays regarding some of the important roles security personnel undertake protecting people and property whilst keeping themselves safe.

Ellie was super eager and enjoyed the experience so much that she now wants to wear her uniform to our local supermarket.

It was fantastic to be invited and collaborate as a panelist with other experienced panelists, regarding the tough challenges independently owned retailers and petrol forecourt owners are facing with the ever rising, violence abuse and theft that they are experiencing on a daily basis.

The packed event took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Stansted Airport yesterday afternoon. The event was organised by Retail's Best Retail's Best - The networking events of the year for roadside retail, food to go & tech for retail!

There were lots of eye opening important questions and answers surrounding the rise and what can be utilised to help with the prevention taking a whole new approach with new solutions, methods, technologies, collaborative efforts between businesses and the police, intelligence/gathering, better training for staff and more.

The event was a great success and I would like to say a big thank you to the event organiser Moiz Vas for the invite and opportunity to share my knowledge and insights. Brilliant hospitality!

It was also great to collaborate with the other panellists who hold a wealth of expertise and knowledge in the field.

The panel discussion was chaired by Michael O'Loughlin and included, Commander Kyle Gordon, Mike Fitton, James Lowman. It was Great to meet and discuss with you all!

I also had the chance to talk and listen to many retailers and their stories surrounding their experiences.

It was also amazing to see Sunita Aggarwal, my very first retail member. A big thank Sunita and her late husband Raj! A big part of my journey started with you and Raj, with both being my very first retail member back in 2017. Thank you both for having faith in me and my important work. I may not have gotten this far if Raj never signed me up.

Also great meeting with our new business partner Dee Sedani, I'm looking forward to seeing our strategic partnership between Catch a Thief and Fuel Guardian grow.

Still much important work to be done!

Retail’s Best tackles crime
The theme for this year’s retailer-led panel discussion will be ‘Risk vs Reward’, begging the question, “when will be the tipping point?”.

With incidents of crime at an all-time high, crime in the retail sector is a widely discussed topic and Retail’s Best will be playing its part

Great to be speaking for the Professional Security Officer Live at The Security Event in Birmingham NEC today

Thank you to everyone who had supported and who came to talk with me afterwards, I do always worry I will just stand and freeze but seeing the kind faces and comments really help me to see that I did get my point across in a way others understood..

I really can talk once I get going 😂

Thank you to Philip Ingram MBE for the invitation and Gaynor for keeping up with me before the event!

I spoke today about, retail security, where is their help and support? Why is there no legislation for security PPE? or is there a legislation of health and safety at work for security?

I also spoke about the type of shoplifters and why theft happens looking at different reasons to committ theft however I missed kleptomania so watch out for me speaking about that at my next big presentation!

And finally what works and the solutions available

I really want to see a change in the industry and the future is nigh! And with my big mouth shouting about it, and some of the great people in this industry, I'm hoping we will see that change soon 🥰

Consequences - prevention - understanding- educating - protection - technology - signposting - human verification

I'm really looking forward to being one of the panellists for this year's retailer-led panel discussion!

The discussion is organised by Retail's Best - The networking events of the year for roadside retail, food to go & tech for retail, on the 16 May 2024.

Other panellists included James Lowman and Mike Fitton.

Also speaking on the panel, also a previous panelists is panel chair Michael O'Loughlin.

The increasing risks and the challenges retailers face are now potentially overshadowing the rewards of running an independent business.

This is an important topic to discuss and it's sure to be another lively retailer-led debate.

A big thank you to Moiz Vas, Founder of Retail's Best Supplier Partners and Director of VAS Group for giving me the opportunity to offer my input on the panel regarding the rise in violence and theft independently owned retailers are facing today, what is being done and can be done better to tackle the issue, reducing crime and it's impact.

Hi, Everyone I hope you are all having a wonderful evening!

It's been hectic lately with work and preparing for these upcoming events!

I've been ploughing on with toothache (wisdom teeth are coming through)

Today (9th April) 2020 we lost my very first retail member Raj, who took a leap of faith in me he was such a wonderful person through and through, Sunita Aggarwal we have been thinking of you and family today 💜💜

I decided to go for a walk to do some brainstorming, the best ideas always comes when we are walking, I came across this beautiful rainbow and managed to snap a picture before it disappeared.

Walked a little to far and managed to get drenched on the way back 😂😂

Now warm, fed and finishing some emails before starting work again tomorrow 😊

A BBC Radio 5 Live interview featuring myself!
The rise in UK retail violence abuse and theft: Catch a Thief UK founder talks With Stephen Nolan BBC Radio Five Live

Catch a Thief UK founder Farrah McNutt interviewed by Steven Nolan on BBC Radio Five Live on the 9/02/2024.

I talked about the importance of properly equipped security officers using the correct PPE equipment such as stab vest, handcuffs and Body Worn Audio and Video Cameras to minimise risks to themselves, staff and public when dealing with violence and abuse. Security officers also need to be adequately trained to be able to deal with any incidents quickly, effectively and safely with the companies they work for adjusting their policies regarding physical intervention and restraint in order for security personnel to get on with it and do their work with confidence. Better rates of pay and or incentives are also required for the most adequate trained officers who work in high risk sites.

A Co-op manager also talks about how his staff and store have been affected by violence, abuse and theft being threatened with needles, knives and hammers.

The Co-op have recently reported a 44% rise in violent incidents in their stores alone. The Co-op along with other retailers are urging MPs to make it a specific criminal offence for anyone who assaults or abuses front line retail workers including security personnel to be made a standalone offence. Catch a Thief UK also supports this proposed new law.

Criminology Professor, Emmeline Taylor from the University of London also talked on the show. Emmeline said that there has been a massive increase in retail crime and that the figures recently released by the Police and The Office Of National Statistics are a drop in the ocean to the actual full extent of the problem. Professor Emmeline highlighted that there are a number of contributing factors to the rise in retail crime such as the cost of living, massive Police cuts as 21,000 Police have been cut between 2010 and 2019 as well as cuts to Police admin and community support officers. The cuts have made it really difficult for the Police to investigate acquisitive crime such as burglary, robbery, car theft and retail crime.

Terminal Fraud!
A clip featuring myself and Catch a Thief UK from Channel 5's new documentary series, Shoplifters Caught Red Handed.

This clip highlights an attempted retail payment terminal fraud in one of my members stores located in Birmingham.

Two male suspects entered the store asking for baby wipes whilst the other male attempted to manipulate the payment terminal in order to use a stolen bank card to pay for alcohol. The male who was asking for baby wipes was doing his best to cause the shop assistant to be distracted.

The situation got a bit tense at times as the shopkeeper in this instance was aware of their distraction scam and managed to refuse them service and even given them a refund which the suspects requested.

Quite often when this type of scam is taking place and the shopkeeper becomes aware and refuses the goods, the bad customer will then ask to be refunded. Many shopkeepers have fallen victim to this and given the refund, the suspect will change the original stolen card that they used to a different card that isn't stolen to obtain the refund. Retailers can lose their money twice with this scam.

You can see these suspects in full via the Catch a Thief UK website.

My advice to retailers regarding this scam is to contact your terminal provider to have the signature request function turned off. Also If a customer asks for a refund don't give them one and ask them to contact their bank.
