It was great meeting and filming with Multi Award Winning Presenter & Reporter, Anila Dhami from ITV's London News yesterday at Fresh Fields Market, east Croydon.

I talked about the social issues surrounding retail crime, the outcome of the budgets crime reduction plan and thankfully the lifting of the minimum £200 threshold.

It was also great to bring along to the interview my amazing nieces and nephew. Who enjoyed the experience of seeing their auntie being interviewed and filmed for television.

I also had the pleasure of meeting with John Prendergast from RETaiL AI who was happy to let me and my nieces and nephew explore their UK created and based Artificial Intelligence Theft Detection technology and I must say that we are all impressed with their system.

I haven't managed to see or capture a copy of the broadcast yesterday but if I do I will gladly post.

A short clip of last nights, The One Show by the BBC featuring myself and family run business retail owner, Benedict Selvaratnam who has been experiencing more than 10 shoplifting incidents every day.

The filming took place last week in Croydon, London where we were interviewed by One Show reporter/ journalist, Matt Allwright who highlighted the rise in retail crime across England and Wales.

I visited the store to offer expert advice on improving security measures. My findings exposed significant vulnerabilities in the store’s defences, which Benedict has since acted upon to better safeguard his business.

The episode drew on recent figures from the Office for National Statistics, which revealed that theft from retail outlets has reached a 20-year high, rising by 30% in the year ending March 2024. The British Retail Consortium estimates that retail theft is now costing the industry a staggering £1.8 billion annually....

I am looking forward to viewing, The One Show this evening featuring myself and some of the important work I do helping retailers detect and prevent crime in their stores. The show will also highlight what led me to create my online retail crime prevention platform, Catch a Thief UK.

It was a great pleasure talking and filming with Ben at his family run store Freshfields Market in east Croydon, London last week with presenter/ journalist, Matt Allwright from The One Show by the BBC.

There was lots of discussion about the sharp rise in violence and theft in retail outlets across the United Kingdom. We talked about new technologies, methods and solutions available that will help reduce, detect and prevent crime against retailers their staff and customers.

We also talked about GDPR and the importance of storing and sharing data regarding suspect criminals who commit crime in retail outlets. I was happy to give Ben lots of advice after an in-depth observation of his retail business.

If you have a retail business that's experiencing, abuse, violence and theft I would be happy to discuss with you the very latest methods, technologies and solutions that will help your retail businesses detect and prevent crime in store.

I am looking forward to being out and about filming with The One Show by the BBC at a retail outlet in one of London's crime ridden areas tomorrow.

We will be filming onsite for a future broadcast regarding the rise in violent retail crime, the methods being used to combat it, what more can be done and what inspired me to create Catch a Thief UK.

Just in case you missed it!
A BBC Leicester Radio interview this morning with myself and radio presenter Ady Dayman talking about the Governments plans to release some prisoners early to help free up spaces in the prison system.

Is it worth sending an offender to prison for a few weeks with no rehabilitation courses, housing and focused support to suit the offenders needs in the community?

We also talked about rehabilitation and the lack of rehabilitation in the community and prisons especially for, "low level less serious offenders", also highlighting the fact that drugs and alcohol and mental health play a major role in offending behaviour and the sad fact that rehabilitation only works if offenders want to receive the help to change whilst some offenders play the system to obtain early release on parole then once free go back to their old ways.

I managed to mention the successful amazing work Stuart Toogood and his team have been doing with West Midlands Police helping offenders rehabilitate and support offenders back into the community so they get the best chance possible to lead law abiding fulfilling lives.

In my opinion tackling the wider issues of class A drug supply and demand is a key priority to reducing many of the social issues and crime we are facing in our communities today.

Despite having to deal with the news and raw emotions regarding the tragic passing of my older brother, Damian who died by drowning one week ago today 😭💔, I managed to pull myself together and continue yesterday with a previously booked filming session. I will explain more about the sad loss of my brother at a later date, despite everything he was still proud of me for my work.

On a more positive note, keeping myself focused, it was good to meet and work with, Ben Kutz and his production team from, Bulgarian television production company, Enrico Palazzo for Galileo Productions.

The documentary will be aired between the end of June or beginning of August.

The interview was focused around my work, the rise in violence, abuse and theft in UK retail outlets. We also discussed and demonstrated the methods and technologies, Catch a Thief have been using in our retail members stores, such as, Public Appeals, Audio Warning Announcements, Artificial Intelligence theft detection technology and Body Worn Video Cameras. We filmed on location in Western Downs, Stafford and Alum Rock, Birmingham.

It was a long day but I am glad I attended to get a little normality back

It has been a great experience today home schooling my beautiful 11 year old niece Ellie-Mai about the affects of retail crime. We also performed some role plays regarding some of the important roles security personnel undertake protecting people and property whilst keeping themselves safe.

Ellie was super eager and enjoyed the experience so much that she now wants to wear her uniform to our local supermarket.

It was fantastic to be invited and collaborate as a panelist with other experienced panelists, regarding the tough challenges independently owned retailers and petrol forecourt owners are facing with the ever rising, violence abuse and theft that they are experiencing on a daily basis.

The packed event took place at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Stansted Airport yesterday afternoon. The event was organised by Retail's Best Retail's Best - The networking events of the year for roadside retail, food to go & tech for retail!

There were lots of eye opening important questions and answers surrounding the rise and what can be utilised to help with the prevention taking a whole new approach with new solutions, methods, technologies, collaborative efforts between businesses and the police, intelligence/gathering, better training for staff and more.

The event was a great success and I would like to say a big thank you to the event organiser Moiz Vas for the invite and opportunity to share my knowledge and insights. Brilliant hospitality!

It was also great to collaborate with the other panellists who hold a wealth of expertise and knowledge in the field.

The panel discussion was chaired by Michael O'Loughlin and included, Commander Kyle Gordon, Mike Fitton, James Lowman. It was Great to meet and discuss with you all!

I also had the chance to talk and listen to many retailers and their stories surrounding their experiences.

It was also amazing to see Sunita Aggarwal, my very first retail member. A big thank Sunita and her late husband Raj! A big part of my journey started with you and Raj, with both being my very first retail member back in 2017. Thank you both for having faith in me and my important work. I may not have gotten this far if Raj never signed me up.

Also great meeting with our new business partner Dee Sedani, I'm looking forward to seeing our strategic partnership between Catch a Thief and Fuel Guardian grow.

Still much important work to be done!

With incidents of crime at an all-time high, crime in the retail sector is a widely discussed topic and Retail’s Best will be playing its part
