Australians sink deeper into recession

By Ravi Raghupathy
Friday 28 June 2024

Recall that the Q1 2024 national accounts revealed that Australia’s headline and per capita economic growth fell to their lowest level since the early 1990s recession:

Australian annual GDP growth
Real per capita GDP growth fell for the fifth consecutive quarter to be 1.3% lower than December 2022:

Australia’s real per capita GDP in Q1 2024 had also fallen to the same level as December 2021, meaning Australians have experienced zero improvement for nine quarters.

The decline in GDP is reflected in retail sales, which also fell to their lowest level in more than 30 years outside of the pandemic lockdown:

In real per capita terms, retail sales had plummeted by around 4.5% in the year to April:

On Thursday, the Melbourne Institute published its Nowcast for Australia’s GDP growth, which is presented below by Justin Fabo at Antipodean Macro:

GDP Nowcast - May 2024

The Melbourne Institute Nowcast estimates that Australia’s GDP growth is tracking at 0.2% for the June quarter, which is well below the circa 0.5% population growth anticipated.

Accordingly, Australians are set to endure a sixth consecutive decline in real per capita GDP when the ABS releases the Q2 national accounts.

This decline in GDP is being driven by the household sector, which continues to struggle with high interest rates, rents, energy prices, personal income taxes, real wage declines, and general cost-of-living pressures.

The pressure on households is best illustrated by the sharp fall in real per capita household disposable incomes, which have declined by 7.6% from the June 2022 peak in annual terms to be tracking around 2018 levels:

While the household sector will receive some relief from the upcoming Stage 3 tax cuts, much of this relief will be undone if the Reserve Bank chooses to raise interest rates.

Today, I am announcing that I am standing as an independent candidate for the federal seat of Calwell. I believe that politics should be fair, transparent, and accountable, and we can do much better than what we see now, Canberra.

This upcoming federal election will define the future for generations of Australians to come. Only Independent can voice for a better future for Calwell — a future in which families like mine and yours are not held back or left behind.

I hope I can count on your support, and I look forward to meeting you soon.

Victoria: the bankruptcy state

Gifted by Daniel Andrews & Jacinta Allan jointly to all our Victorian a merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 and New Year 2024.
Co supported by Tim Tom 👏 Treasurer.

The Victorian government should be declared a national disaster zone.

Victoria is the state with the highest taxes. It has the highest debt. It has the highest interest rate. And it has the lowest credit rating.

State budgets

Last week’s state budget update revealed that Victoria’s debt is projected to blowout by nearly $180 billion dollars by 2027.

Victorian state debt
Victoria’s debt is now expected to cost taxpayers $24 million a day in interest, with Victorians facing the prospect of even higher taxes.

Victorian budget interest costs

Ratings agency Moody’s is even more pessimistic, projecting earlier this year that Victoria’s debt would rocket by 85% in five years, from $122 billion in 2022 to $226 billion by 2026.

The Victorian Auditor-General also recently warned that Victoria’s debt could balloon to $256 billion by June 2027, and questioned why there was no real plan in place to manage the burden.

The blowout in debt comes as Premier Jacinta Allan made the reckless decision this month to sign first major contract pertaining to former Premier Daniel Andrews’ $200 billion Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) boondoggle.

The decision was against the advice of infrastructure experts and has locked taxpayers into the most expensive infrastructure project in history.

“This is really taking a generation’s worth of infrastructure funding and investing it all in one project”, the Grattan Institute’s Transport and Cities program director, Marion Terrill she said.

But Premier Jacinta Allan hit back at the long list of opponents to the SRL:

“We’re seeing plenty of blockers and knockers … when it comes to the Suburban Rail Loop”, she said.

“There are plenty of people for their own — mostly political — reasons (who) want to stop the Suburban Rail Loop”.

To add further insult to injury, the 10-kilometre North-East Link motorway will now cost taxpayers almost $26 billion, up nearly $16 billion from the initial price target.

So, that’s another $16 billion down the drain to go along with the countless billions that the Victorian Labor government has wasted.

The cost of the Metro Tunnel has blown out from $10.9 billion to $14 billion over its construction, whereas the West Gate Tunnel is now expected to cost $10.8 billion, up from its $6.7 billion initial projection.

In response to the new budget figures, Anthony Walker, S&P’s director of government ratings, said the cost blowout for the North-East Link was an example of why the agency had slashed the government’s credit rating.

Walker stated that there was “not a lot” of headroom in the financial projections that would allow Victoria to keep its AA credit rating, and that this may be jeopardised by further cost overruns.

“If the government was to broadly deliver what they put in the mid-year budget, it should be … consistent with an AA rating”, he said.

“The downside risk is we have seen North East Link already increase by 50% over its final costings”.

“While it’s early days for the Suburban Rail Loop, the cost escalations on North East Link show the inherent risks of such major projects. Particularly if you have a look across Australian capital cities, underground tunnelling projects have resulted in a large cost blowout across nearly all projects”.

“There’s a lot of debate over the costings of SRL. But given the recent history of nearly every major project in Victoria going well over budget, the risk here is that SRL will follow suit”.

“We have seen business cases come out with positive cost-benefit analysis on the proviso that costs are extremely low. And we have seen costs increase by 50% on major projects already and some of them are growing more than that”.

“That calls into question the use of taxpayers money, whether it’s being used in the most efficient places”, Walker said.

The vast sums squandered on Labor’s pet projects will leave Victorians mired with crushing debt for generations to come as its population explodes via endless mass immigration.

Melbourne population projection
It will also leave Victoria short of funding for other worthwhile economic and social infrastructure, such as health spending:

And for what purpose? To meet former Premier Dan Andrews’ nefarious infrastructure ambitions and the federal government’s ‘Big Australia’ fe**sh?

Matter of Fact - Open letter to Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews Labor government, public TRUST in government is crucial during this unprecedented challenging this time. That has to be earned, and cannot easily be restored once it is lost. Already lost TRUST by the recent left and right factions fight by faceless man vs shameless man. The Advisor, the people around not right local community or economic advice.
Having said this all, several emails sent to the Premier cabinet and Leader of the Opposition team. No responses so far received.
1. The Victoria State Government Advisor (Vinayak Kolape) have misused Taxi Vouchers (Parliamentary Cab-charge allowance) for his personal visits.
2. Vinayak Kolape (Labor Member) is currently the Advisor to Premier (Victoria) is been appointed primarily to create membership drive in respective ethnic communities and liaison to effectively create divisions to benefit their own agendas and party interest.
3. Firstly I tried to get an Advisor job, then discuss it with Luckhe Kohli, then he suggests I send my profile by Whatsapp message to him. I have sent it. But in the end, there are internal politics between left and right factions, also I am not a Labor member. I am not in a position to secure my Advisor Job. Finally, Vinayak Kolape secured a Job.
(I don't know first much about politics and left and right factions. The recent Current affairs 60 minutes faceless man-made everyone to learn first about Australian political systems, how it works, be aware of it ) One thing I learned the biggest lesson in Life by trusting all these left and right (friends) factions fight, I have been used like a football, used for their own goal in life. Anyway, thank God, my God had different plans in my life. Which is happening right in front of me, whoever created me, used me, and backstab me, I live to God. Karma - it takes its own course and pays them the price of wrongdoings. As long as I think good, do good to others, feel good at the end. I need Justice in this investigation. Wait and watch, more to come in the future, because truth involves us all.

If I elected the upcoming Council election in October 2020, from Aitken ward, Craigieburn City of Hume. I will put my first suggestion to cut Rates by 10% minimum and Why? This is time for Hume City Council to wake up to help our Local Residents and Small Businesses. We have seen in past few Councillors Shining in the news spending Tax Payers money on their Holidays and Taxi Vouchers being used. Now time to clean up and give the Hume City Council and bring the new faces, those are not controlled by Labor Party. I promise I will not claim any unnecessary expenses from the Taxpayers pocket. Looking forward to your support in the upcoming election.
