Today marks 9 years with as we sit in Dubai in the middle of our 30 hour trip home from the best year of our lives so far. Not only have we survived 9 years together but the last year we spent every waking minute with each other, 8 weeks of that living in a car and we still like each other! I think we passed the test of all tests!
Happy anniversary to my best friend and the most annoying human I know.

Last week we stepped into the surreal with a visit to Alice and wonderland in Hamilton gardens. We stopped in to visit a friend but most importantly her gorgeous puppy called Frankie! After jumping on the ferry to the South Island our next stop was the Beautiful Abel Tasman. Our plans for here were to be full of water sports but as we were both struck down by our monthly curse we settled for a boat trip to see “Split Apple Rock.”
On our journey south to Hokitika we stopped to see a seal colony before heading out to Hokitika Gorge where we found the bluest water we have ever seen! Those photos are unedited!
Now we have set up camp by the beach to watch the sunset and skim some stones! Hoping to see some Glaciers next week if the cyclone in Fiji doesn’t stuff up our weather!

To finish last week we took two days at a campsite in Whangarei to wash our clothes and get a hot shower which was LUXURY! After that we headed back on the road to see yet more waterfalls. I didn’t try and swim in these ones after my humiliation of the last. I’ll wait until it’s hotter thanks. We then spent a lovely day in Paihia, took the ferry over to Russel to explore before heading to Keri Keri. Last night we headed further north to sleep by the beach in Doubtless Bay on our way up to Cape Reinga! Heading to the most northernly point of the country today! Let’s pray for no drone restrictions!!

After waking up on the beach this morning near Mangawhai Heads we hiked up to do the cliff walk where we looked over the sea and sand dunes. After this we made a quick change into our costumes and headed out to Piroa falls where I crawled around the rocks like Gollum trying to get in the water but once it hit the b***s I decided was far too cold. I was then humiliated by some teens jumping straight in from the rocks above. After the falls we headed to Waipu Caves and ventured into the pitch darkness wading through water past stalagmites and stalactites to see the glow worms. This was one of the best things I’ve done. Glow worms obviously hate the camera because thought because no matter what I did they didn’t show up so please enjoy a very poor cave selfie instead. Finally we enjoyed some left over dinner parked on the beach and settled in for another night by the sea 🌊 @ Mangawhai Heads

1st night of our travels complete!

We have started our travels of New Zealand 2 weeks earlier than expected which means for 10 weeks we will be living in our car while embarking on the epic road trip around the country!

Last night we arrived at our first camp spot by the water and took in the view and sea air. After our first night sleep we enjoyed a cuppa as we looked out at the view. A pretty good start I’d say!

Today we went to explore Shakespeare regional park and hiked up to the lookout spot for some 360° views and enjoyed a cheeky wee mandarin at the top (look how adorable she is with her wee mandarin!)

On our return to the campsite I decided I’d cook us our first proper meal of the trip and of course the heavens opened. However I managed to use a bungee cord to create a little shelter with the boot door. How resourceful, I know! So tonight we enjoyed our bean fajitas on our little bed and watched a bit of Schitts Creek!

We have 10 weeks of freedom ahead of us and it feels fantastic. I wonder how long it will take for the novelty to wear off! 😅

This weekend we took a trip to Manakau Heads lighthouse and didn’t even take a picture of the lighthouse. We’ve been exploring the Awhitu Peninsula and around Auckland in the north island on our weekends and looking forward to finishing up work to travel full time and see it all!

I thoroughly enjoy the six months of us being the same age where I don’t feel too old!

Happy National Coming Out Day!

The first photo is the last photo I posted before coming out and telling the world that and I were in fact more than our bracelets let on. Thinking back to this time can be good and bad. I remember the fear of judgment, sickening anxiety and constant need to prove myself while always being asked “are you sure?” But I also remember the relief in sharing who I truly was and who I truly loved.

The second photo is Eilis and I almost 9 years later on the other side of the world living our life freely. We would never have found this happiness if we hadn’t had the courage and support to come out.

Happy National Coming Out Day! Even if you’re still in your closet your day will come and you won’t look back!
