Real World ✘ Are We Superheroes?

We’ve teamed up with Are We Superheroes? for the release of their debut single ‘Fast Forward’, which is out today on all digital platforms.

Combining disparate musical histories that encompass work in the soundsystem collective Spiral Tribe, Drum Club, Brassy, DJing, music supervision and production duties with Drang, Are We Superheroes? is the new collaborative project of Lol Hammond, Stefan Gordon and Karen Frost.

Taking their name from a line in the 1971 Nicolas Roeg film Walkabout, the band are drawn to the ideas of disorientation, estrangement and the ‘mystery of communication’ which run a thread throughout the film and are explored in their new single ‘Fast Forward.’

‘Fast Forward’ draws on the band's wide-ranging musical influences and references, with acid house and techno sounds meeting new wave bass and drums layered with a glacial vocal. Lyrically, the song's themes are of desire and alienation in an unforgiving environment, what Sylvia Plath called the 'vast power of cold, snow, stars and blackness... against a small violent spark of will'.

A mutant drum and bass remix of Fast Forward is also available, courtesy of electronic music pioneer and DJ, Duncan Forbes (Spooky).

Today, Montparnasse Musique have dropped 'Kenako' — another track from their forthcoming EP 'Origins'. Contrasting with the hybrid acoustic sounds of the Congotronics scene which featured heavily on their first EP, Origins is somewhat a prequel to the duo’s eventual collaborations with the likes of Mbongwana Star and Kasai Allstars. These tracks represent some of the earliest creations between the duo, who formed Montparnasse Musique during a spontaneous all-night production party after a gig in Paris. Real World ✘ TAXI KEBAB
We are excited to finally announce that electronic duo TAXI KEBAB have signed to Real World X for the release of their debut EP Visions al 2ard.

The electronic music of French duo Leïla Jiqqir and Romain Henry — a.k.a. TAXI KEBAB — reveals influences of krautrock, psyche and techno, all the while haunted by the specter of Leïla’s North African roots. Reclaiming her Moroccan father’s Darija language, it’s through a liberating poetic register that her voice interacts with the acid arpeggios and rippling layers of Romain Henry’s experiments with machines.

On their debut EP Visions al 2ard (‘Visions of the Land’), synthesizers, drum machines, modulated guitars and amplified buzuq collide as TAXI KEBAB venture on a night ride through the Moroccan countryside, unveiling their self-described ‘psyché désoriental’ sound.

The band’s first single ‘Ardina’ (Our Lands), leads with a relentless electronic pulse and Leïla’s passionate cries. “On this song, there’s a question of returning and forgetting and remembering, of connecting to ancestral roots.” she explains. “It’s like I’m wandering in the homeland, a little bit lost.”

“I have remixed tracks for other artists in the past, and had my own tracks remixed, and it got me thinking about using visuals in the same way. Although there are two different videos for the same track, they only have the same clips in them, but some are slowed right down and effected to make them look very different, some are just looped over and over, as one might do for a club track, others are reversed or coloured in a different way – as I would if I was using sound rather than pictures.

The idea was to try and represent how I felt when I wrote the track in the first lockdown, and now, how I feel about it, and the situation in general 18 months on. The first video is darker and more confined, whereas this ‘remix’ represents more freedom, opening up, but still not fully back to the pre-pandemic days – things are still not totally back to normal.”
