Everyday I try to repeat this to myself. My feelings are not facts, my beliefs are not facts. When we're going down the spiral of an anxious thought, we sometimes loose sight of what's real and what's not.

I've recently read a very nice book explaining some of these "thought viruses" that we encounter everyday which cause us to go down the never ending spiral of anxiety and how to cope with them. I'll explain them in following posts but I highly recommend the book if you like reading: The Book of Overthinking, by Gwendoline Smith.

❓ What do you do to exit the intrusive thought spiral?

After many months, I’ve finally taken the decision to take a break from work. Even though it’s a few months too late, I can already feel less pressure about not working tomorrow. Weird feelings of shame and guilt have kept me from taking this step but I’m looking forward to spending time to focus on myself.

❓Have you ever taken a break from work? What helped you the most during that time?

I am so proud of myself for even having the courage to take this decision after 1.5 years. It was very hard because I was fearing that I will not know how to handle the anxiety rollercoaster but I feel like I am well equipped to at least try.

Before taking the decision, I’ve listed out loud how I see myself now compared to when I started therapy. I’ve grown so much and I’ve battled so many internal fights that only made me stronger. I am in a happy place now and I want to enjoy it while it lasts.

❓Do you ever take the time to give yourself credit for how far you’ve come?

For me, anxiety comes in waves and it hits me when I least expect it. Lately I’ve been feeling quite good, but there always a lingering fear it will all come crashing down.

❓What do you do to keep the positivity around for longer periods of time?

People experience trauma and anxiety inducing situations differently. Comparing our traumas to other people’s trauma will only lead to more anxiety and will hinder our recovery.

No one is “more worthy” of trauma related symptoms. No two people experience the same stressful or traumatic situation in the same way.

❓What do you do to stop comparing to other people?

Procrastination is often associated with depression, low self-esteem, guilt and inadequacy.

At some level, procrastinators are aware of their actions and the consequences, but changing their habits requires even greater effort than completing the task in front of them.

❓What do you do when you find yourself procrastinating?

Starting this page is my own kind of therapy. All the content that I’m posting comes from my own fears and thoughts. It’s scary to put it out there but at the same time it’s relieving.

Having people relate to my posts is reminding me that I am not alone and we are all going through hard times but we can get through it by supporting each other.

❓How do you find support when things get rough?

Constantly checking for the presence of our anxiety teaches our brain to fear it. We need to learn to accept its presence, not to fear it. If we get symptoms, we can try our best to overcome them but not let them overwhelm us.

❓How do you stop yourself from constantly checking if you still feel anxious?

This is a very simple example of an irrational fear, of how we overestimate the danger of everyday events. These fears can become so strong that we close ourselves in, we stop leaving the house or we get very anxious when we do.

I have similar fears and I try daily to overcome them. Lately, what’s been working for me is to make plans that are hard to cancel. That way I am forced to get outside of the house and meet friends and family. In the long run I’ve seen this has a positive impact on myself.

❓How do you deal with such situations?

Just because we’re afraid something bad might happen, it doesn’t mean that if we worry and we take all the precautions we will not feel any pain, any suffering. But in most of the cases nothing happens and we’ve just wasted time worrying about something we most probably couldn’t control in the first place.

❓How do you handle these moments when you’re overwhelmed with worries?

Can’t be the only one who feels awful after a great vacation ends. After a week full of great people, beautiful places, lots of distractions and close to no anxiety symptoms, everything came back full force when I came back home and I realized the break was over and I had to start working again and getting back into the routine. But I’ve been through this before, it’s about building that resilience to make us stronger. đŸ’ȘđŸ»

Somatization is real 😔 It’s easy to get frustrated when you’re feeling bodily symptoms but your doctor can’t find anything that could be wrong with you and you’re realizing that your anxiety and stress levels are so high that you’re starting to have physical symptoms.

Not all days are bad. Sometimes we conquer through small wins.
On the days I feel overwhelmed by what’s ahead of me, I (sometimes) try to not actually focus on the big picture but rather break my day into small & achievable tasks. For example, the first small win is to get out of bed and wash my face & brush my teeth. Win! Then have some breakfast. Win! Then start working by sending that one email! Win!
It’s not easy and it doesn’t always work, but it matters a lot when it does work. So focus on that. đŸ’ȘđŸ»

Sometimes answering simple questions becomes a burden. Happened to me more often than I would have ever thought. That’s actually how I started therapy: Someone asked me how I was doing and I started crying. That’s when I reached out to a therapist. That has proven to be the best thing I’ve done in 2020. Also the most difficult one.

Anxiety is such a common, yet such a personal journey. Some days or nights can be harder than others. 😔
I started this page to share some of the random thoughts or fears people with anxiety get. I want to do this because I would like to think I’m not alone in this and so, maybe, to become that “someone else” for other people.
