❗ Forecast highly subject to change ❗

❄️ Next week, it is currently looking like we could see the first major snow event of the season hit south-eastern Australia, possibly including the ACT.

Currently, models have been showing this event for quite a few days, with little variation - which is why I am making a post so early. However, the one thing models aren't agreeing about is the amount of snow.

There is still a split between the models when it comes to the intensity to the event, with some forecasting a large amount of snow for the ACT, but others only have a few centimetres forecast for the higher mountains.

The weather system driving this predicted cold-snap and possible snow event is a large low-pressure system - the movement and intensity of this system will be critical to whether the ACT sees snow or not. This system could also bring damaging winds to our region.

Currently, it is too early to predict if Canberra will see any snow from this system, and I'm still not confident about the amount of snow the mountains will recieve.

I'll have more updates as the models evolve, hopefully I'll have some good news in the coming days.

❄️ No snowfall is expected in the ACT this week as temperatures are remaining too warm for any snowfall to develop.

Looking ahead, temperatures are set to drop moving into next week, making the chances of significant snowfall higher, I'll have more details on that later this week.

❄️ Snow is possible in the ACT at the end of this week. A cold front will bring a significant drop in temperatures and snow will also become possible.

There is still a lot of uncertainty, with models changing details of the forecast every day. Models will continue to change, so treat this outlook with caution, but seeing a snow event back in the forecast is certainly cause for excitment.

I'll have more details closer to the end of the week, and hopefully I'll be posting a snow watch in the coming days.

26/04/2022

❄️ This winter in the ACT, during snowfall events, snow depths are expected to be above average, but the snow levels are expected to be higher than usual. Let's take a look at why this is;

🌨️ During winter, a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is expected to develop, this will increase the amount of mositure in the atmosphere, which increase the amount of rain/snow that falls. This will contribute to above average snow depths during snowfall events.

🏔️ Temperatures are typically warmer than average during negative IOD events, due to a range of factors. These warmer temperatures raise snow levels, making it less likely for areas, such as Canberra, to see any significant falls. However, this doesn't rule out the chances of Canberra receving snow, it only reduces them - all it takes is one large system moving over to make or break a snow season for the ACT.

Another factor to take into account, is that there will be a lingering La Nina at the start of winter, before it tends to neutral conditions (although some models show La Nina continuing through winter, this isn't likely at the time of writing). This increases the chances of above average rainfall, but also increases the chances of warmer temperatures.

This is just a prelimary outlook, which I will update towards to end of May, as climate drivers become more clear - but this winter will definitely be one to watch.

❄️ No snowfall is expected for the ACT this week. Temperatures are remaining near the April average, rending snowfall impossible.

Models are starting to regularly show snow flurries about the highest peaks of the alps on a few model runs each week, so we are definitively headed towards snow season.

As we head towards May, the likelhood of early snowfall increases, so hopefully we will see some early season flurries very soon.

❄️ No snow is going to fall in the ACT this week. Hopefully we see some soon, but for now enjoy the autumn weather while you can.

Earlier in the week I started to get a bit excited when a number of models starting showing some snowfall occuring at the start of this week, but unfortunately this was removed from the modelling.

I'm sure we'll see some flurries in no time, but until then, get outside and enjoy this beautiful autumn weather!

👋 Hey Canberra, it's been a while. The last time I put a weekly snow outlook together was back in September! But now we are moving into the cooler months it's time to start back up in case of some early snowfall.

❄️ This week in the ACT, no snowfall is expected. Even though temperatures are going to be below average, they are going to be too warm for snow, but higher up in the snowy mountains there might be a few flurries.

Winter is coming up on us fast! We have already seen the first snow of the year fall in the snowy mountains, and I'm sure we'll see some in the Brindabellas in no time.

01/04/2022

❄️ It might not be our mountains, but the first flurries of the year were falling up in the Snowy Mountains, meanwhile, in the Brindabellas, Mt Ginini recorded its lowest minimum temperature since November of 0.5°C

There is a very small chance of a few flurries in the early hours of tomorrow morning about the highest peaks of our mountains.

Winter is on its way and I can't wait for the ACT's first snowfall of the season!

📣 New Snowfall Maps for the 2022 Snow Season

I've been working on designing custom predictied snowfall maps for the upcoming snow season, these maps will show the areas where different levels of snowfall is possible.

You might be asking, why would I want this when I could look on a website like windy.com for this information? Well, these maps are going to be drawn up from a variety of forecast models, increasing forecast confidence.

One disclaimer about these maps however, just because a location has snowfall forecasted it doesn't necessarily mean that snowfall will occur, these maps just show where conditions will be favourable towards a certain type of precipitation.

Due to the nature of weather forecasting, forecasts can change very quickly, which is why the date and time of when the map was created is included, as well as the date and time the map is valid to. If you are looking at a map past the date it is valid to, find the updated version of the map.

Thank you for everyone who gave feedback on the map as I was designing it. I hope you all find this useful in the future.

🎆 Happy New Year Canberra! Here's to a better 2022, I have really enjoyed running ACT Snow/Weather Watch and am looking forward to seeing what the weather brings over the coming year.

Only six more months to go until we see some snow again. Until then, stay cool and stay safe.

🌨️ Summer may only be 16 days away, but that hasn't stopped a dusting of snow accumulating at Mount Ginini (1760m) today.

🌦️ Some moderate intensity showers and thunderstorms are moving over the ACT, which are causing temperatures to plummet across Canberra.

The majority of locations are now recording temperatures in the single digits, no doubt that this rain is falling as snow higher in the mountains.

❄️ Snow Flurries will be possible over elevated areas Namadgi National Park overnight Sunday and into the early hours of Monday morning.

🌨️ There isn't any significant snowfall expected, however snowfall this late in the year is unusual (however it isn't unheard of).

🥶 For other parts of the ACT, Sunday and Monday will be cold and windy, with feels-like temperatures struggling to get above 8°c.

If you are out in Namadgi and happen to get any photos or videos of snowfall please send them to us!

That's a wrap! It looks like the ACT has had its last snow-bearing weather system for the year (Remember to check out our other page ACT Weather Watch that follows all types of weather). We're really thankful for your support, we got off to a rocky start with some, pretty bad predictions, but we were able to make up for our mistakes! We hope we helped you to be able to get outdoors and in the snow.

The cold front has arrived. Over the next few hours, you can expect temperatures to drop, reaching 8°c by 3pm.

There is the possibility of snow flurries in Canberra during early Tuesday morning, however, that all depends on the amount of moisture that remains once temperatures are at their lowest. It is likely that the ACT will be cold enough for snow, but all of the showers will have cleared.

🌨️ Weather Watch for Wintry Weather 🌨️

A cold front is forecast to impact the ACT on Monday and into the early hours of Tuesday.

Possible Weather:
Damaging Winds
Wind gusts of up to 90km/h are possible in elevated areas during Monday and Tuesday. Wind gusts of up to 80km/h are possible in suburban Canberra.

❄️ Snow Watch ❄️

For Suburban Canberra on the morning of Tuesday 21/09/2021

Forecast Confidence: Low

A cold front is forecast to impact the ACT on Monday and into the early hours of Tuesday. Temperatures during Tuesday morning may be cold enough to allow for snow flurries to occur in suburban Canberra, however, the showers may have already cleared by the time temperatures are low enough.

Note: Due to the ACT Lockdown and Namadgi National Park being closed, we will not be issuing an information about snowfall in the mountains
