Happy LitFest! Today is a special day, speakers from across the nation have come to the high school to discuss and share topics varying from poetry, songwriting, and film making. Highland Park alumni and songwriter Benji Harris, committee member Laurie Johansen, and film director Kurt Voelker come together to pose in front of the LitFest backdrop. Yesterday keynote speaker Peter Heller, delivered a speech to the student body about his career and shared a passage out of his novel ‘The Dog Stars’.

Saturday, November 5 was the high school's first Culture Fest. The festival celebrated 32 countries and their cultural backgrounds. Each country brought a display to showcase its cultural heritage some of which included native dishes, games, and information about the country. Turkish President of the Culture Fest Committee, Nazil Guven (second from the left) was in charge of organizing the successful event.

Anne Balden’s junior AP Research students Whit Basso, Danielle Weatherwax, Connor Carew, Jack Haney, Claire Binns, Alison Zou, Kate Jackson, Olivia Jackson, Laney Browne, and senior Lily Baumgartner were all recognized by Balden for being apart of the AP Capstone program for two years as well as completing their research papers and projects, which means they receive a diploma for the program at graduation. “I admire their curious and tenacity for sticking with it to the end because it can be stressful at times,” said Balden.

Yesterday in the auditorium, Coach Jay Harris’s Business Law students participated in a Mock Trial. The purpose of conducting a mock trial is to replicate a real court case. The case replicated in yesterday’s court was the trial of Lizzie Borden, the American woman tried and acquitted of the August 4, 1892, axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. Bordens Defenders: Kaycee Nieuwendyk, Peyton Suttcliffe, Maddy Terry, and Keeley Brei all defended Borden who was played by Scout Beeson. Lizzy Borden was found guilty by the prosecution attorneys: Luke Vendig, Blake Bevans, and Jake Watts, and was tried with murder in the first degree.

Bagpipe junior editors Kimmie Johansen, Jeneta Nwosu, Lucy Gomez, and sophomore editors Isabella Navaro, Elise Laharia, and Zoie Carlise all attended the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Los Angeles, California. The staff listened to and participated in various presentations during the convention. UIL journalism participants Ellie Levy, Jeneta Nwosu, Lucy Gomez, and Kimmie Johansen all placed in the district competition and are advancing to regionals. Levy placed third in Newswriting, Nwosu placed first in Copyediting and fourth in Feature, Gomez placed first in Newswriting and Feature, and Johansen placed third in Feature. “ To see that I got first in Copyediting validated my skills as an editor,” Nwosu said.
