Happy LitFest! Today is a special day, speakers from across the nation have come to the high school to discuss and share topics varying from poetry, songwriting, and film making. Highland Park alumni and songwriter Benji Harris, committee member Laurie Johansen, and film director Kurt Voelker come together to pose in front of the LitFest backdrop. Yesterday keynote speaker Peter Heller, delivered a speech to the student body about his career and shared a passage out of his novel ‘The Dog Stars’.

Congratulations to all the seniors who signed yesterday! Varsity Volleyball player Nicole Ma**er committed to further her athletic career at California Baptist University. The right side hitter is excited to play at a collegiate level all while continuing to grow as an athlete and student. ⚔️

Saturday, November 5 was the high school's first Culture Fest. The festival celebrated 32 countries and their cultural backgrounds. Each country brought a display to showcase its cultural heritage some of which included native dishes, games, and information about the country. Turkish President of the Culture Fest Committee, Nazil Guven (second from the left) was in charge of organizing the successful event.

We as a program are moved by the strength of this community and the outpouring of love and also want to show our support for our fellow Scot. Senior Jackson Heis gets set and ready to run his route at last weeks game against Jesuit. The game was a success and the Scots prevailed. The final score was Scots 35, Jesuit 28.

Performances from the cheerleaders, Belles, and the Scotsmen excited the school for tonight’s game against Lake Highlands. During the game Matthew Stanford will be retiring his high school jersey number. The game is sold out with over ten thousand people set to attend.

Here are some highlights from todays Club Fair! Members from the Speech and Debate team, sophomore Margot McKenna, junior Chloe Daugherty and senior Owen Mayre all promoted their clubs by creating posters and handing out candy. If you didn’t get a chance to sign up for a new club today then you will have another because the fair is continuing during all lunches tomorrow.

As a result of the heavy rain, Mr. Fortier’s Academic Decathalon room flooded. The flood inconvenienced the students forcing them to relocate to Mr. Alvarado’s room. “It’s inconvenient but our students are resilient and pretty adaptable,” Mr. Fortier said.

Anne Balden’s junior AP Research students Whit Basso, Danielle Weatherwax, Connor Carew, Jack Haney, Claire Binns, Alison Zou, Kate Jackson, Olivia Jackson, Laney Browne, and senior Lily Baumgartner were all recognized by Balden for being apart of the AP Capstone program for two years as well as completing their research papers and projects, which means they receive a diploma for the program at graduation. “I admire their curious and tenacity for sticking with it to the end because it can be stressful at times,” said Balden.

Yesterday in the auditorium, Coach Jay Harris’s Business Law students participated in a Mock Trial. The purpose of conducting a mock trial is to replicate a real court case. The case replicated in yesterday’s court was the trial of Lizzie Borden, the American woman tried and acquitted of the August 4, 1892, axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. Bordens Defenders: Kaycee Nieuwendyk, Peyton Suttcliffe, Maddy Terry, and Keeley Brei all defended Borden who was played by Scout Beeson. Lizzy Borden was found guilty by the prosecution attorneys: Luke Vendig, Blake Bevans, and Jake Watts, and was tried with murder in the first degree.

During AP 2D Art and Design class teacher Chris Fullwood’s junior student Genevieve Hart creates a graphic that resonates with her favorite poem, A “Light in the Attic” by Shel Silverstein. “I chose this poem because it’s important to me that I have a positive outlook on life even when times seem dull,” said Hart.

Yesterday at Richardson High School the Highland Park Choir competed and won their UIL competition. Both choirs Lads and Lassies and Treble won sweepstakes and got all 1s which is the highest possible score from all six judges.

Bagpipe junior editors Kimmie Johansen, Jeneta Nwosu, Lucy Gomez, and sophomore editors Isabella Navaro, Elise Laharia, and Zoie Carlise all attended the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in Los Angeles, California. The staff listened to and participated in various presentations during the convention. In addition to attending the convention the staff also engaged in activities such as visiting the Santa Monica Pier, Rodeo Drive, and the beaches of Malibu.

This past Sunday junior Raina Pietrzak hosted a fashion show for her club Fashion for Seeds. The purpose of the show was the raise money and awareness for fashion sustainability. Highland Park juniors Mark Philbin and Meryl Katz sported up-cycled clothing.

News editor Elle Polychronis placed second in headline writing for the UIL Journalism competition. Polychronis will be advancing to the regional round for the second year in a row as only a sophomore. “I am thrilled to be able to go to regionals for the second year in a row. I think it will be a really fun experience,” she said.

UIL journalism participants Ellie Levy, Jeneta Nwosu, Lucy Gomez, and Kimmie Johansen all placed in the district competition and are advancing to regionals. Levy placed third in Newswriting, Nwosu placed first in Copyediting and fourth in Feature, Gomez placed first in Newswriting and Feature, and Johansen placed third in Feature. “ To see that I got first in Copyediting validated my skills as an editor,” Nwosu said.

During AP Drawing, junior Anna Solymosi creates a self portrait for her portfolio. Whilst creating this piece Solymosi was inspired by her environment. “The environment around me lives through me and becomes a part of me,” said Solymosi.

At the Contest of Champions Nationals in Orlando Florida, junior Kaycee Nieuwendyk was the overall solo winner. Nieuwendyk also choreographed her own routine. “I was shocked when they announced my name as winner I was not expecting it,” said Nieuwendyk.

In Tyler Perrings theater class, students Jessica Wu, Tucker Mattison, and McKinley Mease practice stage combat combos specifically unarmed combos. “Stage combat is a skill you need to have if you’re going to be a professional performer,” said Perring.
