A psychiatry professor’s mental health initiative in Zimbabwe has inspired a project to promote mental wellbeing at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

A novel therapy model from Zimbabwe is being exported to the 2022 Qatar World Cup to cast a spotlight on global mental health.

The Friendship Bench project is made up of 32 benches that have been installed in prominent locations around Doha, including tournament stadiums. Each bench represents one of the national teams competing in the tournament.

The project aims to promote discussion around mental health and offer advice on ways to promote mental wellbeing through sport and physical activity.

The initiative is part of the Sports and Health programme led by the World Health Organization and is in collaboration with Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health (MOPH).

“The Friendship Benches project is a powerful reminder of the importance of how health, from mental to physical health, is precious and common to all people and nations, and how, through sports, people can reach out to others as fellow human beings in the spirit of solidarity and support,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Several Qatar-based artists contributed to the design of the Friendship Benches, including including Faras Almeer, Health Policy Research Officer at the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH), who spearheaded the project.

The inspiration from Zimbabwe

The idea behind the Friendship Benches comes from Zimbabwean Psychiatry professor Dixon Chibanda.

Chibanda’s project has offered mental health therapy since 2006 to compatriots across the country who cannot afford expensive treatments.

Mental health sessions are carried out through lay health workers, colloquially referred to as “grandmothers”.

Chibanda’s mental health project started with just 14 grandmothers in Zimbabwe’s oldest and poorest township, Mbare, and has now expanded to nearly 1,000 benches and over 1,500 grandmothers in different localities.

The Friendship Benches have helped bridge a shortage of professional healthcare workers in Zimbabwe, which has only 14 psychiatrists, 150 clinical psychologists and less than 500 psychiatric nurses serving a population of 16 million people.

Other countries have adopted the friendship bench model including Jordan, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania and the US – where 60,000 people in the Bronx and Harlem areas have accessed the therapy.

The project applied in Qatar aligns with FIFA’s campaign, designed to raise awareness of the symptoms of mental health conditions.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “Through the campaign, we acknowledged the importance of speaking with family and friends to foster positive mental health. The Friendship Benches project is another vehicle to raise awareness about mental health conditions and to encourage a conversation, which could save a life.

“FIFA is proud to partner with the World Health Organization, and Qatar’s Ministry of Public Health to put football at the service of society and to leave a lasting legacy in Qatar for residents and visitors.”

The meeting, announced Tuesday evening, was to be the first such summit in nearly five years.

Downing Street had said Sunak planned to call for a “frank and constructive relationship” between London and Beijing (Reuters)

A proposed meeting on Wednesday between British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 conference was cancelled as world leaders held emergency meetings following a missile strike on NATO member Poland close to the Ukrainian border.

Although Sunak wanted the meeting to proceed, Downing Street said “movements with timings on both sides” were to blame for its cancellation.

The British prime minister has not had a face-to-face meeting with the Chinese leader since early 2018.

In January 2018, Theresa May made a three-day business trip to China, and in March 2021, during the Covid pandemic, Boris Johnson spoke with Xi.

According to officials, the discussions were aimed to identify areas where the UK and China might begin to make headway, such as on energy security and the climate issue, as well as to persuade Beijing to take a more active role in relation to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Polish foreign ministry said the rocket fell on Przewodow, a village about 6 km (4 miles) from the border with Ukraine, killing two people.

Russia’s defence ministry denied that any Russian missile had hit Polish territory, describing such reports as “a deliberate provocation aimed at escalating the situation”.

“There is an attempt to provoke a direct military clash between NATO and Russia, with all the consequences for the world,” Dmitry Polyansky, the head of the permanent mission of Russia to the United Nations, said on his Telegram channel.

On the sideline of the G20 Summit held in Bali, Indonesia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has held separate closed-door meetings with Presidents Biden, Macron and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The leaders discussed bilateral relations, particularly trade and security issues, and regional developments, according to a Turkish Communications Directorate statement. (AA)

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has held one-on-one meetings with US, France and Saudi Arabia leaders to discuss bilateral and regional issues on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia.

Leaders representing the world’s largest economies have gathered in Bali for the first day of the two-day summit on Tuesday to discuss issues impacting the global economy.

Relations between Ankara and Washington have been strained in recent years due to US cooperation with the terrorist group YPG/PKK in Syria, its failure to extradite the wanted ringleader of the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO), disagreements over Türkiye’s purchase of Russia’s S-400 air defence system and Washington’s sanctions on Ankara.

The US has said it is cooperating with the YPG/PKK in northern Syria to fight the terrorist group Daesh, but Turkish officials say using one terrorist group to fight another makes no sense, morally or otherwise.

During the closed-door meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Joe Biden, Biden said that his government will continue to support the potential sale of F-16 fighter jets to Türkiye.

The leaders also discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly trade and security issues, and regional developments, according to a Turkish Communications Directorate statement.

Biden thanked Erdogan for his efforts to help remove obstacles in the Istanbul grain deal and to resume the exports from Ukrainian ports, the statement said.

The grain deal with Russia is crucial to ease disruptions to global food supplies. It is set to expire on Saturday but global leaders are hoping it would be extended with the help of Ankara’s and UN’s moderation.

While the Biden administration views the grain deal as critical to improving global food security, the White House said “the initiative must continue”.

A third sensitive issue was “close coordination” on the NATO alliance, with Turkey currently holding up membership bids by Finland and Sweden.

The US president also said that Türkiye is an “important actor” in Sweden’s NATO accession process, it added.

Also, Biden conveyed his condolences to Erdogan over Sunday’s deadly terror attack in Istanbul.

At least six people were killed and 81 injured in Sunday’s bomb blast, which the Turkish government confirmed was carried out by the terror group YPG/PKK.

Erdogan also met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in separate closed-door meetings.

No further information was released yet about the meetings.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his US counterpart US President Joe Biden have discussed international efforts to export Ukrainian grain, the White House said.

“President Biden expressed his appreciation to President Erdogan for his efforts to renew the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which they both agreed has been critical to improving global food security amid Russia’s war and that the initiative must continue,” the White House said.

Ukrainian president proposes 10 solutions to end war with Russia

The president of Ukraine has proposed a set of 10 solutions to end the war with Russia.

In a video address at the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted the danger of radiation and nuclear safety under his first proposal.

His other proposals covered food security, energy security, models for the release of prisoners and deportees, the implementation of the UN Charter and restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the withdrawal of Russian troops and cessation of hostilities, as well as the establishment of a “special tribunal” and an international mechanism of compensation for all the damages caused by Russia during the war, among others.

Lavrov ‘hopeful’ on unblocking Russian farm exports, based on EU and US promises

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has that the United Nations had told him of written US and EU promises to remove obstacles to the export of Russian grain and fertilisers.

“We are assured by the UN Secretary-General that all economic operators involved in the supply chains of Russian fertilizers and grains are receiving reassuring signals that they will not be subject to sanctions if they cooperate on the implementation of trade deals with our grain,” Lavrov told reporters.

“The Secretary General spoke about the written promises that the US and the EU gave him. Good intentions are stated there, and if they are implemented, then all obstacles in the way of Russian grain and fertilisers will be removed,” Lavrov said.

“I hope these promises will be fulfilled. At least the UN Secretary General gave me his sworn assurance that this is a priority issue for him.”

Macron urges more Chinese pressure to end Ukraine conflict

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged China’s Xi Jinping to bring Russia to the negotiating table over the conflict in Ukraine, the presidency said.

The two leaders held talks just before the opening of the G20 summit in Indonesia, Bali.

Macron called on Xi to “pass messages to President Putin to avoid escalation and return seriously to the negotiating table”, the French presidency told reporters after talks that lasted nearly an hour.

UK’s Sunak extends weapons support to Ukraine

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has extended his support for Ukraine at the G20 summit while confirming a long-planned order for warships from BAE Systems .

“Russia’s actions put all of us at risk,” he said at the summit. “As we give the Ukrainian people the support they need, we are also harnessing the breadth and depth of UK expertise to protect ourselves and our allies.”

Sunak announced a $4.94 billion (4.2 billion pound) contract to BAE Systems to build five ships for the Royal Navy, a government statement said.

UN General Assembly calls on Russia for reparations in Ukraine

The UN General Assembly passed a resolution on Monday calling for Russia to pay reparations to Ukraine over Moscow’s attack on its neighbour in February.

The resolution passed by the 193-member world body also demands Russia be held accountable for any violations of international law in or against Ukraine.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the General Assembly before the vote that the provisions of the resolution are “legally null and void” as he urged countries to vote against it.

Ninety-four countries, including Türkiye, voted in favour of the resolution, while 14 voted against and 73 abstained. Russia, China, Iran, and Syria were among the member states that opposed the resolution. Not all member states voted.

Twitter users have slammed the prominent tabloid of The New York Times’s coverage of the bomb attack on Istanbul’s busy avenue of Istiklal in Türkiye.

Members of the crime scene investigation police (C) work as Turkish policemen secure the area after a strong explosion of unknown origin shook the busy shopping street of Istiklal in Istanbul, on November 13, 2022. (AFP)

A New York Times report about Sunday’s deadly blast on Istanbul’s best-known commercial avenue has sparked anger on Twitter after focusing on a tourism angle instead of expressions of sympathy with the people of Türkiye.

“Of the tens of millions of tourists from around the world who visit Turkey each year, many spend time in the area where Sunday’s bombing took place,” the newspaper said in a tweet, referring to Istiklal Street, the scene of the bombing.

One user, Marcos Moschovidis, called the coverage “cold reporting.”

“Focusing on tourism (and thereby implicitly saying the whole country is not safe) instead of on the innocent dead and injured is truly horrific and cold reporting.

“Also, I can’t recall that when there’s shootings in the US in popular areas, tourism is mentioned in headlines,” said Moschovidis.

‘Discrimination’

Another user compared the blast to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York.

“Imagine a newspaper in Turkey talking about the impact of the act of terrorism on the tourism industry in America when the twin towers were hit…You guys are so despicable!” the user commented.

Nazgul Kenzhetay, a journalist, rebuked the reporting, saying it was “discrimination.”

“What a discrimination! It’s not a tourism problem, It’s a human crisis. There people died, no matter their citizenship is. It’s important to be human before being a journalist,” she said.

A Turkish celebrity, Berna Lacin, was also among those who raised criticism, calling the tweet “racist.”

“Shame on you! Delete this racist post now NYT!” she wrote on Twitter.

The explosion occurred around 4:20 p.m. local time (1320GMT), killing at least six people and injuring 81 others.

Turkish authorities said the blast is considered a terrorist act and a female attacker detonated the bomb.

Later, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the suspect was arrested, adding that 21 other people had already been arrested in connection with the bombing.

“We assess that the order came from Kobani,” Soylu said, adding, “Early findings show the PKK/PYD is behind the attack.”

Soylu said assessments show the role of the PKK/PYD in the bombing and vowed that the perpetrators of the attack will pay a heavy price.

28/11/2022

Control of Senate may come down to Nevada, where a slow ballot count entered its final act in the nail-biter contest between Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and Republican challenger Adam Laxalt.

Republican Adam Laxalt (L) was leading by just 800 votes against Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto on November 12 morning. (Reuters)

Democrats are just one seat away from majority control of the US Senate next

year, as vote-counting in deeply divided Nevada continued

following Tuesday’s midterm elections and campaigning kicked off

for a December 6 runoff in Georgia.

The processing of ballots in Clark County, Nevada, which encompasses Las Vegas and is heavily Democratic, was advancing with over 22,000 additional votes possibly counted by late on Saturday, said Joe Gloria, the county registrar.

Such a large new number of votes in the statewide tally opened the possibility that this Senate race could be decided by late on Saturday.

If incumbent Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez Masto

manages to fend off Republican Adam Laxalt in Nevada, her party

would then control 50 of the Senate’s 100 seats.

A Democratic victory in Georgia next month would then give

the party outright majority control of a 51-49 Senate. A

Democratic loss in Georgia and a win in Nevada would still put

Democrats in charge of a 50-50 Senate, as Democratic Vice

President Kamala Harris can break tie votes.

The Senate currently is split 50-50 between Democrats and

Republicans. The newly-elected Senate will be sworn in on Jan.

3.

As of Saturday morning, with nearly 97 percent of the vote counted in

the Nevada Senate race, Laxalt was leading by around 800 votes.

However, uncounted votes from Cortez Masto strongholds could

vault her to victory.

Outcome of House races

At a press conference, Gloria was asked whether his office

had received any complaints of fraud or other irregularities

from either campaign. “We haven’t heard anything from any

campaign related to fraud or questioning” of the process or

results so far, he responded.

Suspense over control of the Senate came as it also was

still unknown which party will hold the majority in the US

House of Representatives for the next two years. Republicans

continued to have an edge, but returns were still flowing in for

several races, including many in liberal-leaning California.

It could take at least a few more days before the outcome of

enough House races are known to determine party control of that

435-seat chamber.

Democrats got an important boost late on Friday when

Democratic Senator Mark Kelly was projected to hold onto his

seat in Arizona, defeating Republican Blake Masters, who has not

yet conceded the race.

Kelly, a former Navy combat pilot and astronaut, delivered a

short victory speech to his supporters in Phoenix on Saturday

with his wife, former Democratic Representative Gabby Giffords,

at his side. His remarks focused on working in Congress in a

bipartisan manner.

Tuesday’s midterm elections saw many Republican candidates,

including Masters, echo former president Donald Trump’s contention that he lost the 2020 election to Biden because of

massive voter fraud.

No winner was projected yet in the race for Arizona

governor, where Democrat Katie Hobbs holds a narrow lead over

Republican Kari Lake.

‘Cornered tigers’ Pakistan are slight underdogs against Jos Buttler’s England, but skipper Babar Azam will be banking on the strength of his fast bowlers to give them an edge in Sunday’s blockbuster.

Pakistan’s Captain Babar Azam (L) shakes hands with England’s Captain Jos Buttler after a press conference at Melbourne Cricket Ground, ahead of final match. (AFP)

Pakistan and England are all set for an epic clash for Twenty20 World Cup title in the Australian city of Melbourne, where the legend of the cornered tigers, Pakistan, was forged 30 years ago, and England are again the final foe.

Ahead of Sunday’s contest, Pakistan captain Babar Azam urged his players to believe in themselves and told fans to keep praying for the delivery of their second T20 World Cup title, while his rival Jos Buttler would be looking forward to realise his childhood dream of leading his England to World Cup victory.

After losing their first two Super 12 matches, Pakistan, the 2009 champions have rebounded superbly and bring momentum into Sunday’s final against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“I’m more excited than nervous since we’ve performed well in our last three matches,” Babar told reporters at the MCG on Saturday.

“It is no doubt that pressure exists but it can only be suppressed with confidence and belief in ourselves. And for good results it is impertinent that one must do so.

“The Pakistan nation has always been our backbone. They uphold us through their enthusiasm. I would again request them to support us and keep praying.”

‘Little Dynamo’

The final comes 30 years after Imran Khan’s Pakistan beat England to win the 50-overs World Cup, the country’s first global white-ball title.

Pakistan board chief Ramiz Raja, who opened the batting and took the final catch that sealed victory in the 1992 final, shared memories of the tournament with Babar’s team on Friday.

A settled Pakistan are unlikely to make any changes to their team for the final, and Babar said they would not stray from the trusted game-plan.

If there’s one player who has turned Pakistan’s fortunes around in recent games is “Little Dynamo” Mohammad Haris, who had never played in the batting conditions of Australia. After both Haider Ali and Asif Ali struggled with form in early group games, Haris did what a young Inzamam-ul-Haq had done for Imran Khan in 1992.

Buttler dreams big for England

It is Buttler’s first major tournament since succeeding Eoin Morgan as white-ball skipper.

“I’ve certainly had a few dreams about that kind of thing,” said the 32-year-old on Saturday.

“Of course I think it really links back to what you were like as a kid, the kind of things you would be doing in the garden with your brother and sister, pretending to lift a trophy.

“And now to be able to have the opportunity, to have a chance, to live that kind of thing out is incredibly special.”

As he prepares for his biggest day as a captain, Buttler admitted those childhood memories had come flooding back.

“I think it’s fine to sort of think about those things and what it might feel like or what it would mean,” he said of potentially being a World Cup-winning captain.

England’s path to the final was serene compared to the stress faced by Pakistan after excruciating losses to India at the MCG and Zimbabwe in Perth to start the tournament.

From an improbable position, Azam’s team has since shown the stirring spirit from 1992 with consecutive victories over the Netherlands, South Africa, Bangladesh and New Zealand to reach the final.

An Ebola case has been confirmed in Jinja in eastern Uganda, the country’s health minister said, the first time the outbreak has spread to a new region of the country from central Uganda where cases have been confined so far.

In a tweet on Sunday, health minister Jane Ruth Aceng said the case in Jinja was of a 45-year-old man who died on Thursday.

Authorities have been struggling to contain the highly infectious and deadly haemorrhagic fever since the epidemic was declared on September 20.

Record-breaking Muslim electoral victories in US midterms show that the community has “transformed” from being sidelined to decision makers, says Muslim civil liberties organisation CAIR.

In Minnesota, the US’ first and only Muslim elected to a statewide position, State Attorney General Keith Ellison, was reelected. (AP)

At least 82 Muslim Americans have won local, state legislative, statewide, judicial and federal elections in the United States midterm elections, beating the previous record of 71 Muslim electoral victories in 2020.

The numbers are based on an assessment by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organisation, and Jetpac Resource Center, a non-profit that focuses on increasing Muslim representation in US government and politics.

The record-breaking victories are “a testament to our community’s ongoing rise in American politics and the trust our neighbors have placed in us to represent them and fight for their interests,” CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a statement.

“We are witnessing the next step in the American Muslim community’s political transformation from marginalized voices that were sidelined, or worse, to decision makers.”

CAIR and Jetpac have been following US electoral data for the last six years. This year, they tracked a total of 146 American Muslim candidates running for office, including 51 state legislative candidates across 23 states.

With the elections, the Illinois General Assembly welcomed its first Muslim American members, 23-year-old Nabeela Syed and 33-year-old Abdelnasser Rashid.

Salman Bhojani and Suleman Lalani became the first Muslims to be elected into Texas Legislature.

In Georgia, four Muslim Americans were elected, including Palestinian American Ruwa Romman, who is the first Muslim woman to become a representative at the State House, and Bangladeshi American Nabilah Islam, who is the first Muslim woman and first South Asian woman to be elected into the state’s Senate.

Zaynab Mohamed, a 25-year-old Somali American was elected to Minnesota’s senate. She became the youngest woman elected to the largest state upper house, and was one of the first three Black women in the legislative body.

Also in Minnesota, the US’ first and only Muslim elected to a statewide position, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, was reelected.

The attorney general was joined by members of Congress Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Andre Carson (D-IN) in getting reelected.

21 incumbent state legislators were reeleceted and joined by another 16 Muslim candidates who were elected, bringing the total number of Muslim state lawmakers in the US to 43.

The election results show “that the Muslim community is building solid infrastructure for sustained electoral success,” Jetpac Resource Center Executive Director Mohammed Missouri said in a statement.

“Policy decisions on education, housing, climate, and civil rights are shaped by state legislatures and it is critical that our voice is represented in the policymaking process.”
