I know if you have heard about this but one of the main things I like to do is just colour code everything So I've got like more colours that I use for percussions or sort of orange Also you want everything to be named For this beat I actually use mainly samples from the starter pack.

All you want to do is yeah you want to make sure this is not clipping it If the sound is a bit too loud you usually don't want to do this but in terms of digital analogics I could probably get away with a few more decibels of sound than you could actually do if you were to do everything analogical So the way I do it I have my volume set to half at any given point for my speakers and when I'm actually mastering I'm lowering it 25% I want it to be as loud as it is when it's at half when it's 20% lower basically when I finish with the master and that's how I achieve the same range I'll show you that in one second You could add width to it Then I'll do another limiter to it That's about it I'm just going to turn down the actual speaking of volumes.
Just helps the kick to peek through the actual bits This is with Just a bit more loud a bit more tight It's nothing as I mentioned previously nothing major just a bit more control to the whole sound This is how it all sounds put together right now So if you still like if you're still thinking where I want this to pop out a bit you can either EQ everything you've got already or just bump this just a bit like a few dB here

Then on top of this we're first going to start with one of the main hi-hats Then I like to do accents on top of this So what I'll do is creating another dynamic range but I'll show you in a bit Pan one to the right and then the other one to the left And then I'll just turn these a bit not to bother you too much Just to be there to emphasize the actual groove you're working on And then just because we want the lower range to be covered by our kicks I just cut every frequency on the like 200 hertz on the main hi-hat.

This is how it sounds with the actual effects on it So this is how it sounds with the actual previous It has a more of an atmospheric feel to it We also have a bit of compression to it so it sounds like this with the compression I'll use the makeup just a bit lower We're going to EQ the whole low end from it We just want the high end for this and then with the sidechain compression it should sound like this So you can hear that That's basically when the kick goes so you have your kick pronouncing through the actual atmosphere and it sounds like this with the kicks.

Just boost in just a bit Sweet And then lastly I'm going with the side chain compressor at the end as well So because I want the whole chain to go to actually play with the drums I don't want the boosting to be after I can even move the limiter in front of it and just give it more boost You can see it's barely limiting at this point.

It has oh no it just gives me a good vibe instead of just having it like this For the last instruments we got this flute right here Nothing too quirky to it just a simple flute VST Then we got it compressed with the same sidechain with the same compressor We're using the Supermassive again and it has like another layer to it It sounds like this.

Just make a whole whole difference The slight slight slight changes that add up over over the course of your mix in the whole track What this does basically we got a compressor that actually goes and hits our hi-hat So here's the difference with and without It's literally as I mentioned previously just slight slight small changes In the long run this makes all the difference right You can barely hear it but that makes a huge difference This is everything together for now.

Well with the Glue Compressor first of all we just squeeze the signal a bit and then to have it more pronounced And then with the utility we widen a bit the signal so it has the widest spread Then it makes a difference the way you chain your actual VST's but I like to have the EQ just before the limit of this bit right here Just a preference also what you need to remember is always have the EQA on oversampling because that way you're getting the best sound signal out of it.. So with the side chain we literally did the same thing as with the we have the same ratio the same gain to it the same release and everything Just helps the kick to peek through the actual bits.

What I actually like to do is do the kick first and then have the bass and the percussion work together and then just build on top of that So for this we're first going to start off with the actual kicks We're going to select a section of the song where we feel like everything is more cohesive and we have everything put together And we're just going to have that on the loop We can either press this bit right here or just do control L and we're going to loop this bit right here I'll just play just 808 first So I'll just use this EQ on it What I'm doing with the EQ is basically cutting the high end And if you see here around probably 50 Hertz I'm literally just having a sweet slap That's like three dB deep That's it Just because we just don't want to hit that that hard In that region we'll build it with the kick and we'll have more impact that way You can already hear the difference Right
Mastering Beats and Bass: The Power of Sidechain Compression.
But at the start if you want your kicks to hit and your 808s to hit you always want to sidechain them to like almost everything even vocals Sometimes it's obviously you don't want to overdo it but this is one main thing I like to do So the way this works I have a sidechain here What this does basically we got a compressor that actually goes and hits our hi-hat So every time you hear this sound here this compressor right here goes to work So you can see it right here I literally just compressed our hi-hat just a bit So here's the difference with and without It's literally as I mentioned previously just slight slight small changes
playing a guitar riff on this beat I made
I'd call this modern blues on a chill beat
