9 years ago today we lost a legend. The one and only, David Bowie.

One of my favorite David Bowie stories is when a 17 year old Bowie and his friends formed the group "The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men."

The group appeared on the BBC Tonight show to stand up for their long hair with David Bowie saying “I think we’re all fairly tolerant, but for the last two years, we’ve had comments like, ‘Darling!’ and ‘Can I carry your handbag?’ thrown at us, and I think it just has to stop now.”

Bowie was very passionate about this cause later saying... “Anyone who has the courage to wear their hair down to his shoulders has to go through hell. It’s time we were united and stood up for our curls.”

Leave it to David Bowie to fight the good fight. Miss you man.

1/9/1963: Jazz drummer, Charlie Watts, left his band, Blues Incorporated, & joined The Rolling Stones.

How did a guy that's into jazz and blues fit into rock & roll? Well, his good buddy Keith Richards was there to assist. Charlie is on record saying... "Keith Richards taught me rock n' roll. We had nothing to do all day, but we'd just play these records over and over again, and I learned to love people like Muddy Waters and people like that, through an intensive three-year crash course, you might say."

Thankfully, those lessons into the world of rock & roll paid off.

Charlie Watts drummed for The Rolling Stones for 58 years. That's 57 years, & 51 weeks, longer than he expected as he was quoted as saying that when he joined, he thought the band would only last one week. Something tells me he was okay with being wrong.

12/12/1970: Jim Morrison played his last show with The Doors.

How was the show? Well, not good. Jim Morrison was sadly in a rough state. Halfway through the set, Morrison began spacing out and forgetting lyrics to songs like Riders On The Storm. Infact, when the solos hit in Light My Fire, he sat down. When the next verse came around for Morrison to sing, he was in a daze & missed his cue. The band gave the singer a few more cues and then Densmore finally nudged him with his foot. Morrison got up, smashed the microphone, and left the stage effectively skipping the last verse.

The band decided to give some time for Jim to recover. They halted the tour and decided to pick it up the next year. Sadly, Jim Morrison passed before they ever got the chance.

Great art often comes with great pain.

Happy Birthday to the man with nine lives, Nikki Sixx. A man who got in a carwreck fully n**e, nailed a guys earlobe to a table, and with the help of fans, succesfully escaped from a hospital after being pronounced dead for two minutes. & yes, that last incident inspired the song Kickstart My Heart.

12/4/1980: Led Zeppelin disbanded.

The band was scheduled for an extensive tour that was supposed to begin on October 17th, 1980 but as fate would have it, John Bonham passed away just a few weeks earlier on September 25th. He was only 32 years old.

Led Zeppelin cancelled the tour and on this day in 1980, the band released this statement officially disbanding.

“We wish it to be known, that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the deep sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were.”

10/16/2001 Bob Dylan was denied entry to his own concert.
Yep, apparently before the show he requested tighter security. Absolutely no one without a pass was to be allowed backstage. So when Dylan walked outside without his backstage pass… well he basically did it to himself. Security would not allow him back inside. He ended up calling his team so they could es**rt him past the security guards.

10/12/1969: A radio station in Detroit got a phone call saying if you play Strawberry Fields Forever backwards it says “I buried Paul” sparking worldwide conspiracies.

Conspiracy theorist believed Paul McCartney had died in a car crash in 1966 and was replaced with an impostor by record executives.

10/11/1990: Dave Grohl played with Nirvana for the very first time at the North Shore Surf Club in Olympia, Washington.

How did Nirvana hear about Dave Grohl? Kurt Cobain & Krist Novoselic went and saw Grohl play with his band Scream a few months earlier. At the show, Cobain was quoted as saying “That’s the kind of drummer we need” to which Novoselic agreed later saying “We knew within two minutes that he was the right drummer. He was a hard hitter. He was really dynamic. He was so bright, so vital, so hot. He rocked.”

The band flew Dave Grohl out to Washington for a live audition. Grohl was quoted as saying”I remember getting off the plane, and Krist and Kurt meeting me at baggage claim, it was like having the children of the corn pick you up from the airport.”

10/9/1975: Kiss showed up to Cadillac High School's homecoming dance. How did Cadillac High get so lucky?

Well, in their 1974 season, Cadillac High's football team went undefeated but the next year started out rough. The team spirit was down and they were looking for a way to bring up the vibes.

Head coach Dave Brines suggested a pre-game ritual of... rock music. A kid on the team was given the task of searching for music to act as the teams anthem and that kid chose, as he put it "a new and outrageous band," Kiss. According to him Kiss invoked an old football credo "Keep It Simple Stupid".

With the rock music strategy intact, the team won all seven of their remaining games. The word traveled to the members of Kiss who were so excited they showed up to the homecoming dance and played a concert in the high school gym.

What a sight that would have been to see.

9/3/1968: Ringo Starr rejoined The Beatles less than two weeks after quitting the band. Why did he leave in the first place? Well... he found out Paul was secretly deleting his drum tracks for The White Album and replacing them with his own.

Starr went to bandmate John Lennon and said he felt unloved, left out, & he's leaving the band. Afterwards, he headed straight for a yacht in Sardinia.

Ringo ended up chilling with the captain of the yacht and talking about marine life. One thing led to another and Octopus’s Garden was born.

Meanwhile, back in the UK Paul, Lennon, & George were laying down the tracks for Back in the U.S.S.R. and Dear Prudence. During their time in the studio the band realized they really couldn't go on without Ringo. They ended up sending him a telegram saying that they loved him and that he was the best drummer in the world.

That was enough for Starr. When he returned to the studio, his drum kit was covered in flowers in a message that read: “Welcome back, Ringo”.
