We’ll never know for sure what was on the missing piece of The Last Supper.
Leonardo da Vinci didn’t paint his world-famous work on canvas but on the wall of a monastery dining room in Milan at the tail-end of the 15th century. When renovations in 1652 included adding a doorway to that very wall, that meant removing a significant chunk of the original painting of The Last Supper. Centuries-old replicas show what that section would have looked like, but the original work of da Vinci is a puzzle piece lost to time.
