More than 150 former Trump administration officials now backing DeSantis for president

EXCLUSIVE: More than 150 former Trump administration officials are now backing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' endeavors of becoming the Republican Party's 2024 presidential nominee, Fox News Digital has learned.

Sources familiar with the coalition — officially known as "The Eight-Year Alliance" — confirmed the list is rapidly growing and that the initial number of more than 100 former Trump administration officials supporting DeSantis surged past 150 this week.

Additional members of the alliance, as confirmed Wednesday, include: Former DHS Acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General at the Office of Legal Counsel Henry Whitaker, former Chief of Staff to the Attorney General William Levi, former Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Policy & Interagency Coordination Carlos Diaz-Rosillo, George "Jed" Doty and Christopher Cooke from the White House Counsel’s Office, former Chief of Staff for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Energy Nick Cattroppo, former Chief of Staff for the Director of National Intelligence Dustin Carmack, former Deputy General Counsel at the Department of Defense Ryan Newman, and Jason Weida, who served in the DOJ’s Office of Legal Policy.

Other individuals who have joined the coalition include Juan Cruz, who served on the White House’s National Security Counsel as the senior director for Western Hemisphere Affairs, and former United States Attorneys Nick Trutanich (Nevada), Jay Town (Northern District of Alabama), John Anderson (New Mexico), Trent Shores (Northern District of Oklahoma), and Mike Hurst (Southern District of Mississippi).

TRUMP CAMPAIGN MOCKS DESANTIS' EXPECTED TWITTER PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCEMENT

A website for the coalition and its efforts launched Wednesday.

"Serving in the White House and across the federal government, we worked tirelessly to implement a meaningful policy agenda, to do battle with Deep State bureaucrats, and to make sure the public knew the truth—irrespective of constant media distortions," members of the alliance wrote on the website.

The news comes amid DeSantis' expected announcement that he will seek the 2024 Republican nomination for president via social media Wednesday night.

Sources told Fox News Digital that DeSantis will formally announce his 2024 presidential bid Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET during a conversation with Elon Musk on Twitter.

The primary motivation of the group, sources told Fox News Digital earlier this week, is to promote a candidate they feel would be a viable contender for two presidential terms, something they see in DeSantis. They also want to prevent former President Donald Trump "immediately becoming a lame-duck president" should he win back the White House, considering the polarizing affect his persona has had on American politics.

DESANTIS RELEASES VIDEO AHEAD OF PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that the coalition included former Acting Associate Attorney General Jesse Panuccio, former Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense Will Bushman, former Counselor to the Secretary and White House Liaison at the Department of Labor Pedro Allende, former Senior Counsel and Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Commerce James Uthmeier and Principal Deputy General Counsel at the Department of Commerce David Dewhirst.

Fox has not yet been provided a full list of names of those that have signed on as part of the coalition.

Uthmeier, who currently serves as DeSantis' chief of staff in Tallahassee, and Dewhirst have also been deeply involved in the process of growing the coalition.

The sources emphasized this week that they are not seeking to bash Trump, and that they were "proud" of their service to the Trump administration and its effort to "shake things up" in Washington, D.C., but that they were now "wholeheartedly" behind DeSantis.

Early polls have consistently shown Trump with a commanding lead over his opponents, and DeSantis in a distant second.

Fox News' Paul Steinhauser and Brooke Singman contributed to this report.

US aircraft carrier arrives in Norway to take part in drills with armed forces

A U.S. aircraft carrier arrived Wednesday in Oslo with the Norwegian armed forces saying it gives them "a unique opportunity to further develop cooperation and work more closely with our most important ally, the United States."

The nuclear-powered ship USS Gerald R. Ford entered the Oslo fjord escorted by a rapid dinghy-type boat with armed personnel on board. The Norwegian armed forces has said any boats must stay a half-mile away from the aircraft carrier and a no-fly zone was created over the area where the aircraft carrier was.

Described as the largest aircraft carrier in the world, the vessel will stay in the Norwegian capital until Tuesday. It is then expected to take part in drills with the Norwegian armed forces, reportedly in the Arctic.

The ship's first foreign call was broadcast live on Norwegian public television. Onlookers, some using binoculars, were seen on land watching as the large aircraft carrier glided deeper and deeper into the fjord and eventually reach the city of Oslo.

Laila Wilhelmsen, who stood along the route in Droebak, said that she grew up in the small town about halfway through the fjord during the Cold War in the 1950s and "there were warships here all the time."

NORWAY'S PRIME MINISTER JONAS GAHR STØRE SAYS THE OIL RICH NATION WILL BECOME ONE OF UKRAINE'S TOP DONORS

"I don’t know, but now we have teased (Russian President Vladimir) Putin even more. It’s scary, I think," she told Norwegian broadcaster NRK.

The Scandinavian country’s prime minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, told Norway's news agency NTB that there will come "predictable reactions from Russia to this," adding that Oslo was "continuing the line we have had in recent years of wanting allied exercises in Norwegian waters."

The Russian Embassy in the Norwegian capital said that "such demonstrations of power look illogical and harmful."

Ties between Oslo and Moscow have been tense since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Norway and Russia have a 123-mile-long border in the Arctic.

The Norwegian Coastal Administration said two of its pilots were onboard to navigate through the more than 62-mile long fjord, and that the depth of the 250-feet tall vessel was "the big challenge."

"The aircraft carrier stays marginally within the maximum depth in the sailing regulations for the Oslo fjord," the administration said.

Later Wednesday, the aircraft carrier anchored off the island of Ormoeya in the inner part of Oslofjord, NTB wrote.

In early May, the U.S. Navy said that the ship had departed from Norfolk, Virginia, on its "first combat deployment," following a shorter two-month deployment in the autumn of 2022.

The vessel is the first of the U.S. Navy’s new Ford class of aircraft carriers. Two more Ford-class carriers are under construction.

The vessel houses about 2,600 sailors, 600 fewer than the previous generation of aircraft carriers.

Recent shark bites scary, but serious injuries remain rare

Recent shark bites in Florida and Hawaii and a suspected case in New Jersey have piqued interest in an age-old summer question for beachgoers — is it safe to go in the water?

Scientists and researchers who study sharks said the overwhelming answer to that question is yes, it is safe. Potentially dangerous interactions between humans and sharks are uncommon, and serious injuries and deaths from the bites are vanishingly rare, scientists said.

Nonetheless, the dramatic nature of shark bites and the stories of survivors, such as Hawaii surfer Mike Morita's tale of fighting off a shark in April, capture the imagination. It's a good idea to remember just how rare shark bites truly are, scientists said.

How often do shark bites occur?

There have been typically around 70 to 80 unprovoked shark bites annually, worldwide, over the past decade. And not only are shark bites rare, they've been especially rare recently.

ME DISTRICT WARNS RESIDENTS NOT TO DRINK WATER AFTER FIREFIGHTING FOAM CAUSES POTENTIAL PFAS CONTAMINATION

There were only 57 unprovoked bites last year, and five of those were fatal, according to University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. There had been nine such deaths the previous year.

The shark attack file reported a year ago that one reason for the decline in bites might be be the global decline of shark populations.

It's too early in the warm season to get an idea of how active this year will be for interactions between humans and sharks, said Greg Skomal, a shark expert with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.

"If we get lots of bait fish and forage fish species close to shore, we have a super hot summer that draws people to beaches, more people in the water, then we can determine the risk," Skomal.

What are the most prone areas for shark encounters?

The United States and Australia are typically the sites of the most reported shark bites. Florida had more bites than anywhere else on Earth last year with 16 unprovoked bites, two of which resulted in amputations, the shark attack file said.

This month, two Florida fishermen were bitten by sharks in separate incidents less than 36 hours apart.

What kind of sharks are cause for concern?

White sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks are the sharks most cited by the International Shark Attack File for unprovoked bites. Those species are large sharks that also cause the most fatalities.

1 DEAD IN MAINE SENIOR APARTMENT BUILDING FIRE

However, it's worth bearing in mind that many interactions with sharks are with smaller species that are unlikely to cause serious injuries, said James Sulikowski, director of the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station at Oregon State University. Those species might bite a human, realize we are not their preferred prey and move on, he said.

Is it safe to swim?

Yes. You're at exponentially greater risk of getting hurt in a car accident on the way to the beach than you are to get seriously injured by a shark bite.

Millions of people flock to the beach in the summer as the weather heats up, and that raises the possibility of interacting with a shark. But by taking simple precautions, such as not carrying shiny objects into the water and not swimming at dawn and dusk, beachgoers can reduce any chance of a dangerous encounter with a shark, Sulikowski said.

"We are intruders in their environment. What we can do is be logical and safe about that and avoid areas where sharks are going to be feeding," Sulikowski said. "When an interaction occurs, it's mistaken identity — we are in an area where a shark is looking to eat."

Malaysian authorities raid Swatch stores, seize Pride Collection watches, according to the Swiss watchmaker

Swiss watchmaker Swatch said Tuesday that Malaysian authorities raided its stores and confiscated 164 watches from its Pride Collection.

It said Ministry of Home Affairs officials raided its outlets in various malls across Malaysia on May 13 and 14 and seized the watches because they "bore LGBT connotations."

The watches come in a choice of six colors, matching those on the gay pride flag, and have two rainbow loops on their straps.

TARGET HOLDS 'EMERGENCY' MEETING OVER LGBTQ MERCHANDISE IN SOME STORES TO AVOID ‘BUD LIGHT SITUATION’

"We strongly contest that our collection of watches using rainbow colors and having a message of peace and love could be harmful for whomever," Swatch Group CEO Nick Hayek Jr. said in a statement.

"On the contrary, Swatch always promotes a positive message of joy in life. This is nothing political. We wonder how the Regulatory and Enforcement Division of the Home Ministry will confiscate the many beautiful natural rainbows that are showing up a thousand times a year in the sky of Malaysia," he said.

Predominantly Muslim Malaysia criminalizes same-sex relationships, with punishments ranging from caning under Islamic laws to 20 years in prison for so**my under colonial-era civil laws. The opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party recently criticized a scheduled concert in November by British band Coldplay because of its support of the LGBT movement.

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution told the AP that he is waiting for a full report on the matter before issuing a statement.

Swatch said it has resumed selling the Pride Collection watches and that its legal department is looking into the seizure.

Gay rights group Jejaka slammed the confiscation of the watches, saying it showed "a deeply unsettling level of intolerance."

"It is more than a matter of colorful watches. It’s about respect for diversity, freedom of expression, and, most importantly, love," it said in a statement. It urged the government to promote a culture of acceptance and understanding rather than repression and discrimination.
