Of the many musicians from Diepkloof, Sibusiso Mahlangu ( .isoull ) — a talented RnB & Soul artist — stands out. “I’m one for the soul. I’ll make sure that I hit your soul”, says Sibusiso after explaining how his creative name ‘Isoull’ came about.

I witnessed the beginning of Isoull’s journey with music when we were in the same school about 10 years ago, which was Vulamazibuko Combined School located in Zone 2. “You were there dawg”, Sibusiso recalls and reminds me. He would impersonate the late great Michael Jackson at the assembly point as the rest of the learners stood and admired him while he moonwalked from one end to the other. He continues, “I just started writing some raps back in Primary while impersonating the King of Pop and at that age, that was the only thing in my mind, to be Michael Jackson. I never thought of making my own music but as I grew older I then decided I actually want to be a musician because I believed there was no other gift that God has created me for.”

Outside of music, Isoull also creates visuals via his creative platform . “I’m a visual genius. I can’t be expressive enough without adding visuals.” Sibusiso also studied Television at Boston Media House.

Isoull’s proudest moment was when he dropped his EP in the year 2023 titled ‘Alright, Thank You’. “For me, it’s not only about the music. It’s about the process as a whole. It’s about getting the right person to make the right beats, creating the right lyrics, having a proper art cover”, notes Sibusiso, highlighting his mentality of paying attention to detail when it comes to his craft. I’ve always admired Sibusiso’s attitude towards his work, always establishing a professional outlook and trying his best to set a high standard towards his craft amidst the limited resources at his disposal.

Word to the youth: Stay true to self! Just be true to yourself. Life is long. Not only because of the time but because of what you’re given to do within that timeframe. You can live longer in 8 years doing what you love than someone living for a senseless 50 years.

The streets know him as Stevie 15, but he’s formally known as Kamogelo Mokua. Stevie is a dancer, actor, choreographer fashion designer, director, artist director, physical theatre practitioner, stylist and a music conductor, making him a very multifaceted creative. “Kamo ke motho ka batho, a very spiritual person, and just a human being”, says Stevie when asked to describe the kind of person he is.

It was never really Kamogelo’s intention to be an actor. He explains that his grandmother identified the potential in him to be in the arts, so she took him to NSA (National School of the Arts). “One day I was in the bathroom rehearsing my script for a Nigerian play called ‘The Gods Are Not To Blame’ and coincidentally my teacher uMaNdlovu, the person who referred me to Rhythm City, heard me and eventually saw me and she decided to make me the main character, then the rest was history.”

Fashion-wise, he names his uncle Vesh Trippy and his friend Ginger as individuals that influenced his fashion taste and his perceptions about fashion.

Some of Stevie’s proudest moments as a creative are being part of the Uncle Vinny X Cooperate merch launch, facilitating his own independent show this year called Leeto/Kanana which was in collaboration with NSA, and finally, grooming talent at Vulamazibuko Combined School and Fons Luminis Secondary School, which was his way of giving back to the community.

“I want art and being a creative to not be seen as a pipe dream but to be seen as a beacon of hope and light”, says Stevie. When asked to give advice to the youth he mentions, “Don’t try figure it out. It’s okay not to be okay, it’s okay to not have it all figured out. Just keep going, you’ll eventually figure it out along the journey. Don’t wait for government to give you funding or wait for anyone to give you the spotlight but try your best to do your own things with the limited resources that you have, then you’ll see everything will come together by God’s will.”

Kamogelo Mamabolo ( .mamabolo ) is a true epitome of the word "multi-talended". Amongst all the things he's done until now, he currently considers himself a radio broadcaster, model and athlete. "I'm an explorer, I believe in not being boxed", he mentions. Kamo is a Bachelor of Accounting student at Boston City Campus and is also doing a Radio Production short course.

When asked whether being multi-faceted is a good or bad thing, he notes, "Yes and no. It can be inspiring but it can also affect your mental health. Being constantly busy can be emotionally and mentally draining. However, it's never a bad thing to try and seek to be great, you just need to have a proper mindset and be driven enough towards your passions. You just need to maintain a proper balance between all the worlds you're venturing in."

Kamo has had a never ending appetite for sports ever since he was a kid. He's played netball from when he was in primary school and has just recently represented the Johannesburg Netball Association in the Male under 23B division. In the athletics, he was a track and field 100m & 200m runner and later on he also did long jump, receiving a bronze medal in the Puma School of Speed competition.

The pinnacle of success for Kamo would be him getting to a point in his life where he has reached a level of contentment for his work and his achievements, and also having people that look up to him.

Word to the youth: "Keep striving and reinventing yourself. Education is important, not only the traditional schooling system but also reading into things, learning more and investing your time and energy on what you're trying to do. Forever educate yourself and learn more about everything. Diepkloof is filled with a lot of talent, but talent is a waste without proper knowledge and understanding of what you're trying to do."

Say Hi to Onthatile Nkgabe ( …., a fashion designer based in Zone 4 Diepkloof. Onthatile, short in height, had a problem finding clothes that fit him so he decided to design his own garments, which then led to him developing a greater interest in Fashion Design. “Introvert, respectful and humble,” he said when asked to describe himself in 3 words.

The Zone 4 based designer enjoys watching sports, especially soccer, in his spare time. “I’m a sport fanatic, mostly in soccer. Soccer really built me as a person, it took me out of the streets and helped me avoid things like smoking, bad habits, and bad company. Sports really played a huge role in my life.”

Onthatile was part of the SA Fashion Week as a designer on the 28th of September, a feet he never really believed he could reach so early in his designing career and he mentions how proud he is of himself because of that. Pharrel Williams, himself and Kanye West are 3 of his favourite designers, Pharrel not being a surprise candidate given his clothing aesthetic, clearly indicating the influence of Louis Vuitton’s artistic director.

His ideal image of Diepkloof’s creative space is seeing both the young and old come together to share knowledge and ideas about their craft which will eventually lead to growth and progress. When asked about how his experience as a designer has been thus far he mentions, “Being a designer is tough because style evolves every now and then. You constantly need to be in the streets to identify current trends.”

Mr Nkgabe’s creative projections are to see his garments being sold in “big” stores but elaborates that until that time comes, he ought to remain a guy from the hood that’s always looking to uplift other people and see them win.

Asked to give advice to the youth he said, “Grind. Kasi is not the of the road, there’s still greater heights for you to reach.”
