The end of a journey. On 30th May, myself and the other youth ambassadors took part in the closing ceremony of the Diaspora Youth Ambassador Program.

I am thankful to have been a part of this program over the past year and hope that a representative from Great Britain will be selected in next year’s cohort to continue strengthening ties between the diaspora and the homeland.

And just like that, my position as Diaspora Youth Ambassador has come to an end.

Over the past 7 months I have organised and hosted a number of events for members of the British Armenian community and the wider diaspora. These have ranged from lectures to virtual panel discussions, training seminars and fundraisers. I have had the privilege to work alongside 20 other youth ambassadors from 16 countries whom I will remain friends with for life.

I would like to thank the Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs for selecting me to be Great Britain’s representative. I would also like to thank the Jinishian Foundation for funding the program.

When I first applied for the position in May of 2021 I had no concrete expectations of what the next year would look like. I can now confidently say that this experience has been truly life-changing for me.

I had the opportunity to visit Armenia and Artsakh and to see it in a way I never had before. This position also pushed me to do things outside my comfort zone, most notably my live interview on national Armenian TV in October last year. I have cultivated skills for life and am thankful to the Diaspora Office for giving the resources and support to do that.

I have faced difficult challenges over the past few months when trying to galvanise community support. However, I would like to thank all those who stood beside me and supported me by attending the various events.

The Diaspora Youth Ambassador Program will be continuing and I will share information as soon as applications for 2022 are open. I truly hope that young Armenians from the UK will consider applying and I will be more than happy to offer my advice and tips to anyone who reaches out.

On April 24th I visited the Armenian Community Centre in Cardiff to meet members of the Welsh Armenian community and present the Diaspora Youth Ambassador program to them.

It was an honour to be present on this particular day and partake in the community’s Armenian Genocide commemoration event. The day included a number of speeches. Canon Patrick Thomas, who has always worked closely with the British Armenian community spoke of the importance of Wales’ recognition of the genocide.

This was followed by a viewing of the “Hidden Holocaust” documentary which was initially broadcast on Channel 4 and later banned. The documentary showcases the history of the Armenian Genocide as well as important comments about the British government’s failure to recognise it.

Children from the community then presented their vision of the future with artwork. This was followed by my presentation about the DYAP. Many members of the audience showed an interest in the program as well as projects such as Birthright.

I would like to extend my thanks to the Armenian Community of Wales for giving me such a warm welcome. My special thanks to Mr Torossian for the invitation. It was so great to see how a small community have managed to build a fit for purpose community centre which holds Sunday school Armenian classes. The togetherness of members of the community was also very evident and is highly commendable. I look forward to further collaboration with the community.

On April 19th, I held an online panel discussion with participants of the iGorts program who have previously worked and studied in the UK. The program manager, Karin Yacoubian was also present and gave a detailed presentation about the program.

It was great to hear about the stories of each of the panellists who have all decided to permanently repatriate to Armenia. Despite the fact they all come from varying academic and professional backgrounds they each spoke of the strong sense of purpose they feel working in the homeland. When asked what they would like to pass on to the audience they each echoed the same word: apply, apply, apply”.

[English version] 👧🧒Diaspora Armenian youth will spend their summer in the Homeland. Applications for the Step Toward Home educational and exploratory program are being accepted. As part of the program, 400 Diaspora men and women 13-18 years of age will have the opportunity to explore Armenia, improve their Armenian language, learn Armenian song and dance, and get acquainted with their peers from different countries.

On April 2nd, and I hosted a fundraising dinner in support of wounded Armenian veterans.

Guests were greeted with a complementary drink and an opportunity to network with other young people from the British Armenian community.

I then gave short presentation setting out the purpose of the fundraiser. Guests were also able to view a video prepared by the Soldiers Home Rehabilitation Centre showcasing the important work they carry out.

The Mediterranean inspired meal went down a treat- my thanks to CAIA for kindly donating this.

My thanks also to Stephan Gasparian who led a fun-filled quiz with his infamous challenging and interesting questions. Congratulations again to the winning team!

I’d like to thank everyone for their generous donations and commitment to this important cause.

The £1,000 raised will be sent directly to the Armenian Wounded Soldiers Funds and the Soldiers Home Rehabilitation Centre, ensuring that our wounded veterans have the best possible chance of a return to normal life.

[ENG] 🌐👩 On International Women's Day, Diaspora Youth Ambassadors Inesa Rubinyan (Sweden), Noemi Stepan-Sarkissian (Great Britain) and Marie Hunanyan (Cologne, Germany) organized an online panel discussion for Diaspora Armenian women around the world.

The panelists and attendees had a fruitful discussion and exchanged perspectives on different topics. Luiza Consta Sargsyan joined from Armenia and represented the Swedish-Armenian Consta NGO; Katrin Hakopian represented the Union of Armenian Associations in Sweden; Shoushan Keshishian joined as head of Hub Artsakh; Tatevik Ayvazyan joined as part of the Armenian Institute and Ani Smith-Dagesyan joined as part of the Central Council of Armenians in Germany.

Attendees had a chance to talk about the women who’ve inspired them most and share their ideas on the challenges Diaspora Armenian women face every day. They also spoke about their favorite Armenian female writers and offered solutions to different problems regarding equality, as well as shared advice and inspiring words for all Armenian women. This was the first time that so many Diaspora Youth Ambassadors collaborated on a project internationally and included participants from Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Armenia and Artsakh, and it won’t be the last.

[RUS] 🌐👩 В Международный женский день молодые послы диаспоры: Инеса Рубинян (Швеция), Ноэми Степан-Саркисян (Великобритания) и Мари Унанян (Кельн, Германия) организовали онлайн-дискуссию для армянских женщин диаспоры по всему миру.

Участники провели плодотворную дискуссию и обменялись мнениями по различным темам. Луиза Конста Саргсян присоединилась из Армении и представляла шведско-армянскую неправительственную организацию “Consta”; Катрин Акопян представляла Союз армянских ассоциаций Швеции; Шушан Кешишян присоединилась в качестве главы Hub Арцах; Татевик Айвазян представляла Армянский институт, а Ани Смит-Дагесян Центральный совет армян в Германии.

Присутствующие поговорили о женщинах, которые вдохновляли их больше всего, и поделиться мыслями о проблемах, с которыми ежедневно сталкиваются армянские женщины диаспоры. Они также рассказали о своих любимых армянских писательницах и предложили решения различных проблем, касающихся равенства, а также дали вдохновляющие советы армянским женщинам. Это было первое мероприятие, организованное сразу несколькими молодыми послами диаспоры на международном уровне, где включились участники из Швеции, Германии, Великобритании, Армении и Арцаха, и оно не будет последним.

On 26th February the youth ambassadors from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Sweden, Belgium and France and I held an online meeting with Teach for Armenia. We were also joined by Armenian teachers and headteachers from these countries.

The purpose of the meeting was to provide educators from the diaspora with the opportunity to discuss their experiences and to learn both from each other and from graduates of the Teach for Armenia, Teacher Leader program.

After learning about the 5-step methodological approach to effective teaching, we were divided into groups where we analysed a specimen lesson plan prepared by one of the graduates. This was followed by a more informal discussion during which a teacher from Belgium spoke about the song book which she has published to make vocabulary learning more interactive and memorable for students.

The event proved to be a great success, surpassing all our expectations and demonstrated the need for future collaboration with diaspora teachers and Teach for Armenia.

[ENG] ❗Throughout the entire day, our Office was in touch with Armenian community organizations and individuals in Kiev, Odessa, Kharkiv, Kostyantynivka, Mariupol, Donetsk, Luhansk, Makiivka and other cities, and paid special attention to matters concerning the region’s Armenians.

At this time, there are no victims of Armenian descent or loss of infrastructure. Many families fled the war zone early on toward the central and western regions of Ukraine, as well as the Russian Federation (mainly to the Rostov and Voronezh regions). There are issues with accessing internet and infrastructure.

Ukrainian air and rail traffic is limited, and a number of Russian airports in the cities of Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, Stavropol and Voronezh have temporarily suspended operations.

We ask our compatriots to keep in touch with Armenian diplomatic missions in Kiev and Odessa, as well as with the Armenian Consulate General in Rostov-on-Don.

On 29th December 2021 I held a virtual event to present the Diaspora Youth Ambassador Program to members of the British Armenian community.

I spoke about the aims of the program, why I chose to take part, my experiences in Armenia and Artsakh and my future plans within the community.

Following the talk participants had the opportunity to ask questions and share their initial thoughts about the DYAP. Many attendees were interested to know more about the process of repatriation whilst others were curious about the various organisations which I spoke about such as Teach for Armenia.

Father Hovakim Manukyan, Primate of the Armenian Church of the United Kingdom and Ireland attended the talk and gave his blessing and support for the program for which I am very grateful. I look forward to working alongside the Church and other important institutions in the community over the coming months.

[ARM] 💻«Սփյուռքի երիտասարդ դեսպան» ծրագրի մասնակիցները, ակտիվ աշխատանքներ տանելով իրենց համայնքներում, միևնույն ժամանակ շարունակում են հետաքրքրվել Հայաստանում իրականացվող տարբեր ծրագրերով։ Այս անգամ նրանք հանդիպեցին «Արմաթ» ինժեներական լաբորատորիաների ծրագրի ղեկավար Սեդրակ Վարդանյանի հետ։

Հանդիպման նպատակն էր ծանոթանալ «Արմաթ»-ի ստեղծման ընթացակարգին և գործունեությանը, բովանդակային կողմի ապահովման ձևաչափերին, ընդգրկվել ցանկացող երեխաների տարիքային խմբին, ծրագրից ակնկալվող արդյունքներին և այլն։ Քննարկվեցին նաև սփյուռքյան համայնքներում «Արմաթ»-ի տեղադրմանը, սփյուռքից մասնագետների ներգրավմանը վերաբերող հարցեր։

[ENG] 💻While actively working in their communities, Diaspora Youth Ambassador participants continue to stay abreast of the programs taking place in Armenia. This time, they met with Setrak Vartanyan, Program Manager of “Armath” engineering laboratories in Armenia.

The purpose of the meeting was to become familiar with Armath’s establishment process and work, format for creating content, age group of children who want to become involved, expected results, among other topics. Also discussed were matters related to the addition of Armath laboratories in the Diaspora and the involvement of Diaspora specialists.

[RUS] 💻Участники программы «Молодой посол диаспоры», проводя активную работу в своих общинах, в то же время продолжают интересоваться различными программами, осуществляемыми в Армении. На этот раз они встретились с руководителем программы инженерных лабораторий «Армат» Седраком Варданяном.

Участники встречи познакомились с деятельностью «Армат», форматами обеспечения содержательной стороны, включение в возрастную группу детей, ожидаемых результатов программы и т.д. Обсудили вопросы, касающиеся реализации программ «Армат» в общинах диаспоры, привлечения специалистов из диаспоры.

Day 7
October 2nd 2021
This was our first full day in Artsakh and by far the most moving of the entire two weeks.

We visited Gandzasar Monastery, built in the 13th century. Father Hovhannes explained the historical significance of the building as well as how he and his family had helped rescue citizens of Artsakh during the recent war. Whilst walking around the monastery it was difficult to not consider what it had withstood through the ages and the fact that we have the privilege now in the 21st century to walk within its walls.

The name Gandzasar translates to “treasure mountain” which is believed to have originated from the tradition that the monastery was built atop a hill containing ores of silver. The visit was memorable for two reasons. Firstly the surreal-like fog covering the site which meant all that could be seen were the walls of the monastery and the tree beside it. Secondly, the a ca****la performance of “Der Voghormia” an Armenian hymn, by the talented diaspora youth ambassador for Argentina.

The remainder of the day was spent at Hub Artsakh, an NGO and co-working centre for motivated young people located in the heart of the Republic’s capital, Stepanakert. The organisation is directed by Shoushan Keshishian, a Lebanese Armenian repatriate. Hearing from such a wide array of budding young entrepreneurs and content creators was humbling when remembering the horrors of the 2020 Artsakh war which they had first-hand experienced. Their undying will to build a better future gave me unquantifiable hope.

Despite the majority of Stepanakert showing almost no remnants of the destruction it suffered in the autumn of 2020 you will see amongst these images the result of the indiscriminate shelling on civilian homes by Azerbaijani armed forces.

October 1st 2021
Our first and only talk of the day was delivered by Sevan Kabakian, the director of Birthright Armenia. His message was clear and inspiring, reaffirming my decision to take part in this important program in future.

For those who are unfamiliar, Birthright provides young diasporan Armenians with the opportunity to spend time in the homeland volunteering in their chosen field. Not only does this allow participants to become acquainted with life in Armenia, particularly as many stay with a host-family, it also gives them an opportunity to enrich the country with their skills and expertise.

The remainder of the day was spent travelling to the Republic of Artsakh. Despite having been to the region before, this visit was profoundly different. Approaching the border and seeing the presence of Russian peacekeepers beside what was 2 years ago still Armenian territory made the result of the 44-day war very real. However, as I will share in the coming days this visit also gave me unparalleled hope for the future of Artsakh and its people.

[ARM] 🙋Սփյուռքի երիտասարդ դեսպանները հանդիպում ունեցան «Դասավանդի՛ր, Հայաստան» կրթական հիմնադրամի ներկայացուցիչների հետ՝ ծանոթանալու Հայաստանում իրականացվող երկամյա առաջնորդության զարգացման ծրագրում սփյուռքից մասնակիցների ներգրավման քաղաքականությանը: Ներկայացվեցին սփյուռքյան համայնքներում ծրագրի վերաբերյալ իրազեկմանը, համապատասխան անձանց ներգրավմանը, դասավանդվող առարկաներին, ուսուցիչների տեղակայմանն ու վերապատրաստմանն առնչվող հարցեր:

💡Երիտասարդները, կարևորելով իրենց համայնքներում կրթական գործընթացների արդյունավետության բարձրացմանն ուղղված աշխատանքների իրականացումը, հետաքրքրվեցին նաև տեղերում ուսուցիչների վերապատրաստման, մասնագետների միջև փորձի փոխանակման կազմակերպման հնարավոր ձեռնարկներով: Հիմնադրամը պատրաստակամություն հայտնեց ընձեռնելու այդ հնարավորությունը: Հանդիպման ավարտին պայմանավորվածություն ձեռք բերվեց հետագա համագործակցությունն արդյունավետ ճանապարհով առաջ տանելու համար հստակ առաջարկներ ներկայացնել, և փորձել դրանք իրագործել՝ հաշվի առնելով յուրաքանչյուր համայնքի առանձնահատկությունները:

[ENG] 🙋Diaspora Youth Ambassadors had an online meeting with representatives from Teach for Armenia Educational Foundation to learn and become involved with the two-year Leadership Development Program for Diaspora Armenians. The speakers addressed program dissemination in Diaspora communities, involving interested community members, subjects taught and instructor placement and retraining.

💡The Diaspora Youth Ambassadors attach importance to finding ways to improve education in their communities. During the live session, they had questions about taking specific measures to retrain teachers and organizing experience exchanges between professionals. The Foundation expressed its readiness to provide these opportunities. Everyone agreed to having clear proposals to promote further cooperation in an effective way, taking into account the differences of each community.

[RUS] 🙋Молодые послы диаспоры встретились с представителями Образовательного фонда «Преподавай, Армения!», чтобы узнать о политике вовлечения участников из диаспоры в двухлетнюю программу развития лидерских качеств в Армении. Были представлены вопросы осведомленности о программе в общинах диаспоры, вовлечения соответствующих лиц, преподаваемых предметов, размещения и обучения учителей.

💡Молодые люди, заинтересованные в реализации мероприятий, направленных на повышение эффективности образовательных процессов в своих общинах, поинтересовались возможными инициативами по подготовке учителей и обмену опытом между специалистами. Фонд выразил готовность предоставить такую ​​возможность. В итоге встречи была достигнута договоренность предоставить четкие предложения по дальнейшему продвижению будущего сотрудничества, попытаться реализовать их, с учетом специфики каждого сообщества.

Armenia in 2,600 years of border and mapping problems.

Yesterday evening we had the pleasure of welcoming cartographer Mr Rouben Galichian to discuss the significance of historical maps between Armenia and her neighbours and the topical issue of borders between the Republics of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

It was great to see so many young people present at the event who had come prepared with thoughtful and relevant questions. It was also encouraging to see new faces, including individuals who would like to become closer to the British Armenian community. We welcome you all with open arms.

The talk was followed by a drinks reception where attendees had the opportunity to continue their conversations with Mr Galichian and each other.

Many participants were interested to know more about the process of delimitation and demarkation of the borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Day 5
September 30th 2021
The day began with a visit to the entrepreneurship and product innovation centre (EPIC) at the American University of Armenia.

The interior of the building was highly impressive boasting countless high-tech features and offering spectacular views over Yerevan.

We first heard from Nejdeh Hovhanessian who discussed business activity and start-ups in Armenia. We learnt about the business incubator project at EPIC which helps early-stage teams with idea validation and business model creation.

Our next speaker, Sergey Tantushyan delivered an extremely engaging workshop on effective communication skills. I particularly enjoyed the task of comparing the body language and oratory styles of political leaders at important meetings to determine what this revealed about their personality as well as their approach to the questions being debated.

Vahe Rober Ayvazyan, the leader of our next workshop discussed both the importance of negotiation and ways in which we can improve our abilities in the field. His use of golf as an example of how negotiations take place was very insightful.

We finished the day with a talk from Teach for Armenia representatives. An organisation which I will be sharing more information about in the coming months. I will say however that their mission and work over the past few years are revolutionary and something which as Diaspora Youth Ambassador I intend to support.
