We asked our NH community to share Art That Matters, which moves us to create in response to the Gaza genocide. This is one of the selected entries that was submitted.

Poem Title: The Story of Rim and her Grandfather

Their eyes bloodshot with pain?
But there’s something else I don’t understand.
My grandfather would take me to the mosque and show me the people.
“These are our brothers,” he’d say,
He loved them dearly for the sake of Allah.
One day, I asked him, “Grandpa, is it just these people?”

My grandfather smiled, “How could that be?
The world is vast; there are billions of Muslims.
They wouldn’t let anything happen to Jerusalem…
They wouldn’t let anything happen to us…
Our brothers wouldn’t ignore us…” he said.
He said it, and so, when the bombs began to fall, I wasn’t afraid.
Because the first thing I learned was to say Allah’s name.
I wasn’t afraid; my grandfather was there. But,
In the mosque that the bombs destroyed, most of the uncles were gone.
The streets where we rode bikes were no more.
We waited for the billions of Muslims my grandfather spoke of, but they weren’t there…
It felt as though Muslims existed in name but not in spirit.
We had so little, and our little was too much.
Some people seemed full only with pain.

And so, I am Rim,
The soul of my grandfather,
The one who looked at the world with olive eyes,
A martyr, pure and innocent…
I see and hear everything that’s done and left undone.
Because I am a martyr Rim, like Gaza,
I never died, I do not die…

While the ongoing conflict and suffering endured by the people of Gaza and elsewhere in the ummah weighs heavily on our hearts, we wish you and your loved ones a Ramadan Kareem. May Allah ease the suffering of our ummah in Gaza and the world over. May every believer be blessed with His mercy and forgiveness. May Allah allow us to make the most of this blessed month with the best of deeds that are pleasing to Him.

Even as we face a time of hardship and darkness, may the seeds of renewal and victory be already planted in the soil of our hearts and minds.

Not all heroes wear capes. In fact real life heroes never do and they look like the rest of us. And among the most bravest and most honourable of them in the world today are in the besieged G@ za. You will know them by their blue vests with the word, PRESS written on them. A vest meant to protect from harm, the narrator of real life stories. In G@ z@, it has become a target for the killing machine 🎯 These heroes risk their life and limb and those of their families to document for us stories of a people who’s gallantry will fill the pages of history. And many have paid a heavy price for it losing their lives or of their loved ones.

For a world lost in propaganda, misinformation and sophistry, they have grounded us in the depth of the human soul where pure truth, unrelenting courage and a deep faith connected to the meaning of life, lie. Qualities the world had lost. But G@ za brought them back. And our heroes broadcast them to the world. Thank you for showing us what heroes look like.

We are here to further raise those voices.
