If you love craft beer and the advancement of diversity, this 3 part episode is for you! We start the show with the originator of the Black is Beautiful movement, Mr. Marcus J. Baskerville Co-owner and Head Brewer of Weathered Souls Brewing Co out of San Antonio, TX. We try his original liquid and then go down the line of all of the most popular BiB’s that were produced and also give each charity the brewers support.

The Black is Beautiful initiative is a collaborative effort amongst the brewing community and its customers, in an attempt to bring awareness to the injustices that many people of color face daily. Their mission is to bridge the gap that's been around for ages and provide a platform to show that the brewing community is an inclusive place for everyone of any color. They are asking for all breweries and brewers far and wide to raise a glass with us in unison and participate in this collaboration.

Please be sure to follow our special guest panel.

Lovie Lee Smith was born on May 8, 1958 in Gladwater, Texas. He is an American football coach who is the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He was previously the head coach of the Chicago Bears (2004–2012) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014–2015), as well as the Illinois Fighting Illini. Smith has been to the Super Bowl twice, as the defensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams in 2001 and as the head coach for the Bears in 2006. Smith led the Bears to a 27–24 victory against the defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks during the 2006 Divisional Playoffs, winning the first playoff game of his career. Later, a 39–14 victory came against the New Orleans Saints at the NFC Championship. Smith became the first African-American head coach (and the second minority coach, behind Tom Flores) to lead his team to a Super Bowl, just hours before Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy, his good friend and mentor, became the second. The friends together became the first two African American head coaches to oppose each other in a Super Bowl. The Bears lost Super Bowl XLI, 29–17.

Today, we salute Mr. Lovie Smith!

Mack Brewing Co is one of the first black owned brewing companies based in Philadelphia, with a footprint anywhere beer can be enjoyed. As an alumnus of Johnson C. Smith University, he started in this business simply because he enjoys beer, not just those big names you always hear about. He enjoys fresh new ideas of beer, new flavors and styles. He’d never seen African Americans owning breweries and wanted to do something to change that. He started doing research on Black Owned breweries and found the story of Theodore Mack Sr. and his company "Peoples Brewery" in Oshkosh, Wisconsin; the First African American owned Brewery and Mack Brewing Company was born.

Today, we salute Philly Mack and Mack Brewing Company!

🗣it’s the ! The beer is "Sour Me Unicorn Farts" from DuClaw Brewing Company. It is a sour coming in at 5.5% ABV. This glittered sour ale with fruity cereal mashed in, brings slightly tart sour, a bouquet of fruits & a hint of biscuit. A collaboration between DuClaw Brewing Co. and Diablo Doughnuts.

The cigar is "Joya de Nicaragua Antaño" from Drew Estate Ci**rs. This Antaño 1970 is a potent blend of Nicaraguan black tobaccos wrapped in a dark rosado-hued Nicaraguan Criollo wrapper. Extremely peppery on the palate, this very powerful cigar is overwhelming to many, while perfect for those who crave the very strongest of smokes. If you are an experienced premium-cigar smoker, these very full-bodied smokes are a very wise choice to add to your humidor.

09/09/2021

Anthony Kevin Dungy was born on October 6, 1955 in Jackson, Michigan. He is a sports analyst and former American football safety and coach, who served as a head coach in the National Football League (NFL) for 13 seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts. Dungy's teams became perennial postseason contenders under his leadership, missing playoffs only twice in Tampa Bay. He led the Colts to victory in Super Bowl XLI, making him the first black head coach to win the Super Bowl.

Dungy began his head coaching tenure in 1996 with the Buccaneers, a franchise regarded as one of the league's worst. Through implementation of the Tampa 2 defensive scheme, Dungy brought new success to the Buccaneers, leading them to four playoff appearances in six seasons. He would be fired after the 2001 playoffs due to frequent postseason struggles, but is credited with constructing the team that won Super Bowl ###VII the following year. After his departure from Tampa Bay, Dungy served as the Colts' head coach for seven seasons, qualifying for the playoffs in each. His greatest success occurred with the Colts' Super Bowl-winning season in 2006, the franchise's first in over three decades and the first since relocating to Indianapolis. He retired from coaching following the 2008 season.

Since retiring, Dungy has served as an analyst on NBC's Football Night in America. He is also the national spokesman for the fatherhood program All Pro Dad and also devoted himself to lobbying for preventative heart screenings for children through the SafeBeat Initiative. Dungy was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.

Today, we salute Mr. Tony Dungy!

03/09/2021

🗣it’s the ! The beer is "The PastryArchy Root Beer Float" from DuClaw Brewing Company. It is an Imperial Brown Ale coming in at 8.7% ABV. Emulating aromas & flavors of the classic, all-American root beer-meets-vanilla ice cream concoction, this imperial brown ale with additions of vanilla bean & lactose will take you back to simpler times, bellying up to the soda fountain or mom’s kitchen table. Enjoy straight up, or poured over a scoop of ice cream for a special treat.

The cigar is "Whiskey Row" by Diesel Ci**rs. The core of this cigar is made up entirely of Nicaraguan long-fillers from 3 different growing regions - Ometepe, Jalapa, and Condega – that have been aged from five to eight years. The bourbon barrel aged binder is a Mexican San Andres leaf, and it’s all held together five-years aged Ecuadorian habano wrapper. The barrel aging produces a strong oaky flavor and hints of bourbon in the aroma. You’ll also notice some floral notes, spice and some sweetness in a medium-bodied format. The construction has been nothing short of flawless – something we’ve come to expect from AJ-made ci**rs. Grab a box of these unique Diesels today, pair ‘em with a few fingers of the good stuff, and you won’t be disappointed.

🗣it’s the ! The beer is "Festbier" from Atlas Brew Works. It is a märzen coming in at 6.1% ABV. This is their irreverent take on a German-style Festbier with an increased hop profile features a blend of German and American hops. The Atlas Festbier is lighter in both color and body than a traditional Oktoberfest beer resulting in a more drinkable lager. Sweet bread notes from the malt, orange blossom aromas from the hops and a clean yeast profile make for a stein-worthy Festbier.

The cigar is "1964 Anniversary Soberano Maduro" from Padron Ci**rs. This dark and leathery Nicaraguan puro is simply exquisite, with a texture that is 100% exclusively Padron. Delivering a rich, full-bodied profile containing notes of cocoa, earth, and nutmeg, this robusto has a sweet cinnamon finish with an ideal pinch of pepper. An extraordinary smoke that is mandatory for every humidor. Individually packaged in a square aluminum tube for maximum protection and freshness.

🗣it’s the ! The beer is "Jumbo Slice” from Other Half Brewing Company. It is an Imperial IPA coming in at 8% ABV. Depending on how you look at it, it's either the bane of the DC culinary scene or a late night savoir. Either way you are going to need two plates and bunch of napkins to make it through this late night munchie session of Galaxy, Motueka and El Dorado hops.

The cigar is "Master Blender Selection 4” by Davidoff Ci**rs. The Master Blend Selection 4 Toro is a limited edition premium cigar crafted by Davidoff’s Master Blender Eladio Diaz. A Dominican puro, the Master Blend Selection 4 features a dark maduro wrapper. Davidoff’s Master Blend Selection 4 is a medium-bodied cigar that offers notes of coffee, cinnamon, and walnut.

🗣it’s the ! The beer is "Outsider's Perspective" from Cushwa Brewing Company. It is an imperial IPA coming in at 8% ABV. This beer carries aromas of jolly rancher candy, pineapple, and light evergreen. It has a medium mouthfeel, with a lactose sweetness. It reminds us of peach smoothie and strawberry oatmeal.

The cigar is "Eiroa by Christian Eiroa" from Eiroa Ci**rs. Medium to full-bodied, Eiroa starts out with a hints of leather and pepper. The flavor is distinctive, with definite undertones of salty-sweetness. The second third begins to intensify with amplified character and flavor. The finish is just right, with helpings of cocoa, coffee, and cream clinging to the palate. Boasting an even draw, solid construction, and an incredibly unique taste, Eiroa fully honors the family name.

C.R. Patterson and Sons was an American automotive company, active from 1915 to 1939 primarily in Greenfield, Ohio. They are the first African American founded car company founded by Frederick Douglas Patterson, and named after his father Charles "Rich" Richard Patterson. They made the Patterson-Greenfield automobile. In 1918, C.R. Patterson & Sons halted their auto production and concentrated once again on the repair side of the business. By the 1920s, they started focusing on building and designing truck and bus bodies, which were fitted to chassis made by other manufactures. The company was renamed Greenfield Bus Body Company. Frederick Douglas Patterson died in 1932, and his son Postell Patterson (1906–1981) took over the business.

Most of the bus bodies were purchased by school boards in Southern Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky, as well as the Ohio Transit Company and used in Cincinnati and Cleveland. In 1938, the company was reorganized under the name Gallia Body Company and the headquarters moved to Gallia, Ohio. Unable to raise enough money, the company closed in 1939.

Today, we salute C.R. Patterson and Sons!
